So I turned on the TV this morning and saw an episode or two of Rental Magica. Seems interesting enough that I will watch it.
Just how much does high resolution in watching anime matter?
Because if the pictures are basically simplifications of what they would look like if the show were live-action...
Depends on which show it is, some are visual spectacles some other aren't.
A lot, depending on the show and whether or not you care about things, well, looking good. 480p is watchable, but higher resolutions look noticeably better. Admittedly, I don't usually bother with downloading HD videos, because most of the time when I watch anime it's while I'm reading stuff on the internet or whatever, so I don't want it taking up my whole screen anyway, but if it's a show where I really care about the visuals of it a lot, then I'll probably get an HD version (depending on various factors, like bandwidth considerations) because it really does look a lot better. Also, anything under 480p is pretty painful to watch in full screen. 320x240 videos (VHS rips and the like) are awful to watch even at 100% size, because they're so tiny.
>Maybe that thing with Becky's transformation was a one time thing, maybe I should just finish Dog Days, I've always hated leaving things incomplete...
>Eleven minutes into episode 3
>HahahahahahNO
On the bright side.

Well I thought I was going to watch this series because it looked like it'd be interesting, but... I guess now I'll watch it because it'll suck?
Also, Sword Art Online episode 2:
>everyone wants to kill Kirito because they think he was a beta tester
>he decides to tell them that he not only is a beta tester, but also a cheater and that he let everyone die on purpose
>everyone respects him and lets him go
Who's Hiroyuki Yoshino? Does "composition writing" mean script, story/setting, or music?
I thought Yuki Kajiura wrote the music for Mai-HiME.
By "composition writing" they mean what's usually called "series composition" which means writing the plot of the series, outlines of what happens in each episode, etc. Not music composition, and also not necessarily writing episode scripts.
Also, Hiroyuki Yoshino is the writer for infamous breast milk manga Seikon no Qwaser, in addition to what Crunchyroll credited him with.
Yoshino's writing cred is dubious at breast.
I wasn't too interested in Magi but now I'm keeping away from it with a ten foot pole.
Aw, I hadn't heard about that show before but it looks kinda cool. Here's hoping it somehow turns out good anyway?
Well, he did also write for Macross Frontier and Denpa Teki na Kanojo, which... I think were good? (though I haven't watched either)
But in any case it's possible for a bad writer to turn out something good once in a while, or for the show to be salvaged by other people working on it. Not that I'd be terribly optimistic, but... it's possible?
Oh, is he why I've been stuck at episode 16 of 26 in Mai-HiME for two years now?
Might possibly be. Still want to watch Guilty Crown?
Does it feature attractive female characters?
Okay, more seriously: Does it try to mix comedy and drama, and do so inconsistently? Because that was one of the problems with Mai-HiME.
The main problem with Guilty Crown is that it shows very inconsistent characterization, the main character is even worse than a cypher, he doesn't even work with the roles he is given each episode, which is almost never the same role twice: some times he is heroic, some times he is angsty, some times he is a perfectly normal person, some other times his character change at the bat of an eyelash. some other characters tend to change accordingly to what whim the writers have that episode, most of the time to suit their interaction with the main character, also hurting their credibility. Also, by having the same rough plotline of perfectly "normal" gains superpowers and joins a rebellion of code geass, you can guess some character arcs pretty easily i.e.: shirley 2.0. being the most prominent example. Speaking of character arcs, they don't always make sense, and even the ones that do, with a few exceptions, tend to be hamfisted, obvious and poorly done. Speaking of plot itself, the main problem with is that it breaks its previously stablished rules at the middle of the run, and just keeps breaking them until the end.
And yes, there are pretty women. Which brings me to the point where I have to examine their characters.
Inori: overly pretty, petite, mysterious, main heroine: totally devoid of character, her arc is mostly about romance with the main character, which is just totally unbelievable, for the previously mentioned issues.
Ayase: Best character over all, her character arc is the most believable and better paced. She's hot, also a paraplegic mecha pilot.
Tsugumi: One term sums her up: DAT ASS. Seriously though, she's not as developed as Ayase, but like her, she's one of the few characters that don't reallly get dragged in the mud by the plot. Uses a body suit with pretty lights, uses a hacking terminal that's really convenient to show her moves, she's a hacker for the rebellion and is like 14 and likes to carry cat ears which double as her hacking headgear.
Shirley, I mean Hare: She's the token normal girl who likes the main character and therefore doesn't stand a chance, she's pretty, overly innocent and believes in the good in everyone, therefore she has to die to make a point.
Kanon: The other normal girl, she's got little development but at the same time means her character is more consistent than others. short-hair, glasses, petite, therefore the class representative. Has a crush on the drug dealer.
Arisa: she's the dignified aristocratic girl who is fair, attractive and gets the crush on the rebel leader. Also class president. Her character is the most dragged in the mud, turning her into a woman scorned bitch for the sake of plot, even when her reasons to defect are plausible and even understandable, but the show just doesn't want to give her a sympathetic POV.
Sounds like a mediocre shonen show.
Congrats glenn, you've described most of Mr. Yoshino's career.
I'm just mad that Inori's character design was wasted...
Sounds like a mediocre shonen show with great art.
^^Actually, that was one thing that stuck out as really bad.
Who wrote the music for GC? What about AW?
Guilty Crown: Hiroyuki Sawano
Accel World: Hiroyuki Ooshina, Mint Jam, Onoken
As it turns out, every Japanese man is named Hiroyuki.
Also you could have looked that up yourself.
GC's music was done by Hiroyuki Sawano and that one guy from supercell, it was pretty well done, almost at Element Garden's level.
Accel World I'm not sure, but it's easily the best part of the show.
I feel like there's been some sort of shift with Accel World's production, as if they've been given more cours. The first OP basically had EVERYTHING in it, including the kings and characters who don't totally show up until last arc, now it's very arc based. Every character in it (Aside from the spinoff manga advertisement) is in the current arc and the kings have been eliminated.
Speaking of which, the Accelerated World is definitely not a healthy place to be for over ten years while your RL body ages like fifteen minutes. They should have gone with that, but nooo....
The report of great music is tempting me to watch these shows.
Go watch Alien Nine instead. It has a really good soundtrack and it's not an awful show and also it's on your On-hold list on MAL, and also I like it (though admittedly it has a lot of problems, and it's only half of a story since it just abruptly ends halfway through the manga without even making up an ending).
Alternatively, Yuki Kajiura does the music for Sword Art Online. Therefore, you should watch it and join me in being mystified at how it's popular.
So the author of Accel World and Sword Art Online has a talent for making things that are not good yet somehow loveable?
So, is the music up to her usual levels in SWO? Because I might start watching it just to hear it...
I am not the right person to ask about that. To be honest, I don't usually even notice the soundtrack to most anime/movies/games/etc., and Sword Art Online is no exception.
That said, you should still watch it to make fun of how hilariously unheroic Kirito is. Or how little characterization anyone actually gets before we're expected to care about them. Or how this is an action show that goes out of its way to not have fight scenes.
Didn't that movie have a justification for being stuck in a game and nobody looking for the creator aside from "STOP THINKING ABOUT IT NOW OR THE PLOT DOESN'T WORK".
I'll get on it tomorrow since I still have to power through E7AO and Hyouka for the seventh time.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous has a great first episode, I can't wait to see more. The only gripe I have are female protagonist's creepy fish eyes.
^ So it's an action series with tight characterization minus action scenes and characterization?
I heard the first couple of episodes adapt side-stories from the LNs, so that might be the cause of the characterization issues, but if they knew that was going to cause problems right off the bat they should have left them unadapted.
There wasn't because that's what they were doing from the get-go
