    >maybe Dark Souls, even though I suck at video games

Dark Souls is not difficult. It's unforgiving, but moment-to-moment it isn't much harder than most AAA games. It's an awesome game and you should get it, though.

IJBM: when games become famous for attributes they don't actually have. See also: Braid.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

    wait a minute

    hold the goddamn phone

“On February 12, 2010 it was announced that Obsidian Entertainment, developers of Neverwinter Nights 2, would be working with Red Eagle Games on the new Wheel of Time video game under the EA Partners-Program.[33] This game will be released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.”

WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD ABOUT THIS UNTIL NOW

  • I'm a damn twisted person

I'd dispute that an extremely unforgiving game doesn't translate into a hard game regardless of the moment to moment play. To use a work place analogy, which is less miserable a job where the moment to moment work is incredibly difficult or a job where the environment is unforgiving to the extreme and any mistake is punished harshly?

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I'd say Dark Souls is difficult.

There's more than one way to add difficulty.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^The thing is, though, that Dark Souls kills you less frequently and cheaply than, say, the average FPS. The difference is that in most games, dying has no consequences at all.

So basically, Dark Souls doesn't kill you a lot so much as it makes you worry about dying a lot.
  • edited 2012-07-29 18:00:30

^^^ Yeah, but for some reason a lot of people like to believe that difficulty can only come in one, very specific but simultaneously very ill-defined, form.

That said, I don't think Dark Souls is all that punishing either.  Demon's Souls seems like it was, but Dark Souls generally was a lot more forgiving overall.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

@Forzare: Because it was probably cancelled.

    Also, EA.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Demon's Souls is weird in that it's harder than Dark Souls, but also much more exploitable.
  • Has friends besides tanks now

    It's unforgiving

Which . . . can make it difficult?

Good to hear that the gameplay itself isn't that hard, though. I tried Demon's Souls once or twice and it was kind of insane.

    ^^^ man I hope not

Wikipedia doesn't say anything about it being cancelled, so I still have hope, dammit.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    >Which . . . can make it difficult?

Being unforgiving can make a game difficult, but I don't think it does here. Rather, it's mainly to force a defensive playstyle and create a frightening atmosphere.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

^^Was there any information about it after 2010? Also, Obsidian had to layoff a shitload of people, so there's that. And again, EA.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I'd argue that Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls) are also difficult on the basis that they don't teach how to build an effective character. A "well-balanced" character, stat-wise, is actually pretty bad for instance. Once you know how to get things done, it certainly becomes a lot easier, but even then it's easy to become "locked" into your particular winning strategy and fail consistently whenever it doesn't work.

An interesting play experience for me has been playing a Viking-themed character and a samurai-themed character. The former can only use a particular shield, which has 85% physical damage reduction on block, which means that it's error control moreso than a complete defense in its own right. The latter cannot use any shields at all, and only samurai-themed weaponry like curved swords (especially katanas), spears and bows.

Both characters require a pretty considerable change to the way I generally play. My main character, a knight with high faith, can more or less sit back behind a shield with 100% physical damage reduction and look for weaknesses, or simply wait for an enemy to spend itself. His high faith and divine weapons means he's dealing high damage, both physical and magical in nature. He can more or less wait out a tough enemy and strike when the moment is right for a lot of damage. If it all goes tits up, his high endurance, plus Havel's ring ensures he can dodge easily.

Essentially, those themed characters are missing stages of defense my main character can take advantage of, forcing me to find alternate tactics. My main character has the benefit of being informed by previous Dark Souls characters, plus a few runs of Demon's Souls -- he's built, knowingly, to be a juggernaught swordmaster with a fraction of God's power at his disposal. But the others? While new players are unlikely to go for a "theme" run, the other characters more likely represent what a new player might have at their disposal or what they might use. They don't know where all the best stuff is, so they just use the best of the stuff that's in front of them and build their tactics around that.

So, yeah, Dark Souls is much easier when you know to:

    • Get a shield with 100% physical damage resistance.

    • Upgrade endurance, vitality and one or perhaps two other stats while ignoring the others.

    • Pick a weapon based on animations that work for you and upgrade it up a path that supports one of your dominant stats.

    • Ignore Blighttown at first and go to Darkroot Garden instead (perhaps even before the Depths). You might even want to go to the Catacombs, if you think respawning skeletons are less frustrating than Blighttown (they are).

    • Once Queelag is down, use cannibalise coloured titanite chunks you don't need for green titanite shards.

And so on and so forth. Knowing as much about the game as we do, we can turn everything before Anor Londo into a breeze (and a fair bit of stuff after that). We know where all the resources, gear and special stuff is.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I do agree that it would benefit from a tutorial regarding stats, but I don't think knowing the location of gear is as important as you'd think; something good tends to be lying around at any given point.

My suggestion to newcomers for character builds is to start the game over if it seems too difficult and try to improve your build. I did that twice, and the third time I blew through the game with ease.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

    smote

Finally playing Bastion, after having picked it up with the last humble bundle. This game is great. The environment's beautiful, the narrator's voice is nigh unto Morgan Freeman, and the gameplay is a bit more strategic than I would've expected. And I always had a soft spot for "rebuild the world"-type stories (Legend of Mana still has a little place in my heart for that, actually).

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Playing Terraria. Just died to the Waffle. It was at 179/8000 HP T_T

  • Just bought the La-Mulana remake. It's really awesome, the game as a whole feels a lot more balanced.

It's still hard as fuck, though.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

I just finished my first playthrough of Alpha Protocol.

i really liked that game you guys

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

I have it, but haven't gotten very far with it, mostly because I think Human Revolution came out right after I got it.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I don't think it's as good as Human Revolution, but it does a lot of things right, especially in the story and choice department.

It's one of those games that I really need to play through again at some point, because it seems like everything I did had some bearing on how the plot played out. I spared a lot of people and got them as allies, when i could have executed them. I failed to save people that I could have. Even the order I did the operations in the midgame seemed like it mattered to an extent.

And I really liked the dialogue system, even if the choice timer could be a little unforgiving at times. It's all about manipulating people.

Also Stephen Heck is like the best character ever.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Just finished Asura's Wrath. I like how the game deliberately leaves out story elements, including the ending proper, for DLC.

Oh wait no. The other thing.

    Despise with a firey passion.

  • Definitely not gay.

Does ANYONE here have a non-shitty Kirby's Dreamland 3 rom?

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

^^ I get the impression that they expected Asura's Wrath to be much more successful than it actually was.

    Silence is golden.

@Malkavian: Why did you have to mention that game?! You have invoked... HIM!

1: Roms, and by extension, rom-begging are/is illegal.

2: If the problem you're having is that the trees hides your characters during the forest level and the game generally looks like shit, you might want to read this.

  • Why did you have to mention that game?! You have invoked... HIM!

But he hasn't posted here in a while, so we don't really have to worry about it.

  • 1: Roms, and by extension, rom-begging are/is illegal.

Because that sure stops people from talking about them, right?

  • I'm a damn twisted person
No, but it means take it to PMs or IRC or learn to euphemism tango.

    Has friends besides tanks now

As long as no hard links are posted to the forum, it's not against the rules here, but if it would bother enough people to leave talk of roms, or rom-begging, out in the open, we could probably add something to the rules about it. I, personally, don't mind seeing someone ask for such files here, as long as the actual trading of dubious links occurs where prying eyes can't see it, but I don't have much experience with the law and don't know how far is too far.

  • Silence is golden.

admitelly, that was very poor wording on my part. Should have simply said that asking for that kind of material and trading links in the open is Not A Good Idea
