    That's a curious position to take on user accounts, and certainly not in line with what most people would expect from such a system. People stake their on-site reputations on these names, so having a poorly-implemented authentication system that does not guarantee identity is arguably worse than not having one at all.

    It's actually my pen name. I did the same thing Alex Lifeson did and translated my real surname into English.
    My first thought was "ooh, I should do that too!"

    Then I remembered my last name is already English.

    CA: I guess you could translate it into another language that meshes well as an "American" last name, like Irish or Scots Gaelic, or French, or German.

    American surnames tend to be corrupted, so you can corrupt it too.

    My surname in Old English would likely be Beceling, which would probably corrupt into Bechling or Beechling by Modern English. (Actually, Beech/e could also be a corruption, if somewhere along the line the "-ling" was dropped.)

    Both names exist.

    My mother line surname is a corruption. Mogoruza was actually Muguruza in euskera.
