  • There is love everywhere, I already know

That's it, I'll buy an Asuma figma and pretend she's from a better show, SAO isn't worth it.

Binbougami Ga! has gotten really good, unlike Natsuyuki Rendezvous, which I feel has become an American Soap Opera in record time...

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

why don't you just find a figma of a better show?

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

I like Asuna's character design a lot... plus I have all this money I've saved up for Figmas and I'm not seeing any Hyouka or Eureka Seven AO ones coming out...

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    > pretend she's from a better show

    I know that feel

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

Really? What shows did that happen with?

But seriously, Asuna Figma, LiSA's crossing field on repeat, I'm pretty happy with what SAO managed to give me by being so terrible.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Mai-HiME, with Natsuki Kuga and Nao Yuuki.  In fact, I have to further pretend that they also have better characterizations than they did.

Aoba Tsuzaki from Jinki: Extend.  Very interesting start for a character, but either the plot or presentation fell flat on its face.  I'm going to argue both did.

And to a lesser extent, Éclair from Kiddy Grade, whose plot takes a few odd turns at times, but thankfully not enough to derail her characterization.  And on a smaller scope, Pfeilspitze, who never got any more characterization than "is probably a spy" and "likes Armbrust".

For me, I'd add Haruhi Suzumiya (For getting overshadowed in a series where she's extremely powerful and IN THE TITLE) and both Shino and from .hack//ROOTS (The former for spending the first half acting competent, smart and caring then devolving into a mess so the male hero can save the day and the latter for turning into a complete idiot whose beaten at fighting by newbies despite being able to hold her own against a powerful guild less than seven episodes earlier).

Maybe that's just because the second half of .hack//ROOTS isn't very good, but the girls really got screwed.

So, Funimation is reissuing Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze and serial experiments: lain in November (among others), and all of them are now on Hulu.

And to a lesser extent, Chiara Ferina in Element Hunters.  There's one episode where she got the short end of the stick, where Ren did something, Homi did something, then she failed at something, or something like that, which resulted in a "we need teamwork" situation which Ren did the heavy lifting of anyway.  She had fewer shining moments than Ren did, though the writers probably considered Ren the main character anyway.

Haruhi Suzumiya (For getting overshadowed in a series where she's extremely powerful and IN THE TITLE)

Why? The show makes it pretty clear she is not the protagonist.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

She gets overshadowed by every. single. person in the club. I mean, she's basically the Deus Ex Machina for the rest of the club's adventures, never a character in her own right.

  • a little muffled

I don't think she ever gets overshadowed by Koizumi.

Also nearly all of the first season is about her.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

Admittedly, it doesn't get really bad until season 2 and Disappearance, but it's still sort of disappointing how little she's involved in.

    a little muffled

It's essentially an ensemble series. Is the name a bit misleading on that front? Yeah, I suppose. Problem is the whole premise kinda requires Haruhi to be not around when anything cool happens. Perhaps Tanigawa didn't really think that through as well as he should have before he started writing.

  • @DYRE: You disliked Princess Mononoke...?

    HERESY. BURN THE HERETIC!

    *...*

OK, in all seriousness, I am genuinely curious about this one, not so much because I find it incomprehensible (I don't) as because it's a very rare opinion.

It's not that I don't like it, because it was definitely alright, but just that I wasn't really amazed by it like other people seem to be.  There were a lot of cool things that happened in it, and it was animated well, but other than that I didn't really... care about the story or characters at all.

Oh, cool.  Lain was pretty great, though I haven't seen any of Yoshitoshi ABe's other works.  Maybe I'll actually buy it, eventually.  I dunno.  Still have other anime I want more though.

  • I'm a damn twisted person

    Here, There, Everywhere

I can understand not connecting with the characters and finding the plot a bit whatever-ish, even if I strongly differ in my opinions on the matter... although I feel that "animated well" is a massive understatement. Mind you, I am nerdier about this stuff than most, but the visuals and the animation itself are both near-immaculate. There was but one scene in which I could tell that there was any CGI involved in the entire film, and that was literally for all of two seconds. Out side of purely hand-drawn works, that does not happen.

    I'm done gushing now.

Funny, I still like My Neighbour Totoro better.

  • Totoro was one of the first Ghibli movies that I ever watched, if I recall correctly. It's the 20th Century Fox version though, still have to watch the Disney version, which is apparently superior.

I haven't seen Princess Mononoke yet, though I sincerely want to, but I remember finding a pretty incredible(and long) documentary on YouTube, which probably aired on Japanese television, that pretty much chronicled every aspect of the production. It'll probably take a few days to watch, but it's worth watching. Here's the first part.

^^ I would say that both versions are about equal; while I prefer the earlier version (partly out of nostalgia), I still have to give the Disney dub props.

So, I started watching Full Metal Alchemist today, it's great but...

I just finished "Night of the Chimera's Cry". I don't think any further explanation is necessary.

Someone, please, hold me for a little while.

    Here, There, Everywhere

There really is no other logical response to that episode than, "Oh, God..." The fact that it is immediately followed by the one with the (admittedly entrancing) serial killer monologue does not help things.

So I finally watched Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance.

I dunno how I feel about it.  Pretty much all of the changes from the TV series seem... unnecessary, and for the most part just make the series seem more generic.  Also, Asuka doesn't get to do anything cool. :c

Oh well.  It's still entertaining in its own right, and I'm still excited for the next movie.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

You hadn't seen that yet? Hmm, I still don't know how I feel about Mari, but it was an okay movie (Not as good as 1.11, but it was okay).

In other news: One more BD until Symphogear can stop wailing on my wallet (Well, I ordered 6 forever ago but I'll only acknowledge being done after I get it...)

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

In obvious news; Tobi is Obito Uchiha and I should not have binged on the Naruto manga again.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I liked it better than 1.11, probably because there was more new stuff and I was really impressed with how the creative team behind it has continued to capture the kind of abject amazement inspired by the original series. Although I suppose that's mostly a visual and audio thing.

On the other hand, it's interesting to see the level of bizarro-fucked-up reduced to the extent of the characters being remarkably more functional than they were in the original series. As far as I've heard, the original series was sidetracked by the personal issues of the creative team and ended up reflecting that, whereas this is apparently trying to rebuild the series down the "straight and narrow", so to speak.

  • You can change. You can.

2.22 is great and I like that it goes completely off the rails as well as having a certain degree of self-awareness regarding it being a retelling, rather than just being a straight retelling.

But yeah, Asuka was pretty much shafted in that. Him and Toji. And to tell you the truth, I just never found Rebuild as relatable as Evangelion was. Then again, Evangelion's melodrama also did amuse me, whereas I found 2.22's ending much more heartwrenching and impressive than its original counterpart. (I shit you not, I was laughing at cannibal EVA)

On the other hand, we're getting Asuka cosplaying as Nick Fury while fighting Angels in space with the lance of longinus soon enough so everything's ok

  • edited 2012-08-29 14:24:21

    soon enough

The middle of next year isn't exactly "soon."

Though if we're lucky we'll have shitty camrips in a few months, but that's not really the same... >.>

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

Tobi being Obito is like the end to a zigzag game of guess, at least.
