Like something equivalent to the Kamen Rider Hyper Battle videos? As in, just a silly fun thing they can do without regard to continuity or even tone. (yes, I know OVAs are a thing, but that sounds exactly like something you'd see in HBVs, even though this isn't Kamen Rider)
Anyway, after three episodes I think Vividred's tone just isn't what I'm looking for in a magical girl series right now. Probably will still watch, just not gonna love it as much as Symphogear or anything. The way the Alone are apparently after the futuristic power source reminds me of Shin Mazinger again. Also, Vividgreen's outfit actually has vague resemblance to traditional Japanese garb! That's something I don't see often.
Sentai has HBV videos too. Yeah like that, I guess, if not in a OVA.
Is it wrong that the mecha influences make me want to see a magical girl version of Mazinger's Big Bang Punch? Doesn't necessarily have to be shaped like a fist, just the same general idea of something wrapping around someone so they can use their entire body as a projectile. And oh yeah, some dialogue along the lines of "smash everything into atoms!" would help.
Nope, in fact mecha-slash-magical girl shows should really just try and do everything mecha shows have ever done.
I'd kind of much rather have a mecha/magical girl show that does any things that magical girl shows do, instead of just having lots of fights except with girls instead of robots.
Like Star Driver in reverse?
"Stuff that magical girl shows do" like... in terms of plot or aesthetics?
I'd think more narrative structure and character arcs.
Oh.
Vividred would be much better for it. I don't know why, but if they were mecha I'd accept them getting their power ups so fast much easier but I guess with magical girls I feel there's got to be a lot more emotional build-up (especially for stuff that involves sharing identity).
What I really mean I guess is... in a lot of magical girl shows , the various conflicts the main character faces have a personal meaning for them beyond just it being what they need to do to save the world. Often they're pretty explicit about this, like in Cardcaptor Sakura where Sakura's personal growth is actually the entire in-universe motivation for the plot, or how in Fushigiboshi no Futagohime, the girls' magic power is directly linked to their maturity and thoughtfulness, etc. Meanwhile, in stuff like Nanoha and Symphogear and Vividred Operation... you have elements of this sort of but mostly it's just about lots and lots of fighting.
There are other things too, but that's probably the important one.
Oh, incidentally, since I need to keep mentioning Figure 17, Figure 17 also does the "magical girls who become one person when they're fighting" thing, and in particular it does it in a more emotional and thematically... having a theme at all way than Vividred Operation. Though it is much less entertaining (or at least, not entertaining in the same way) because bleh animation/sound/character designs/choreography.
Even... transforming into vehicles? Also, the idea humanized Breast Fire sounds a liiiitle silly.
Hmm, in My-HiME, any HiME that loses will have somebody dear to them vanish into nothing. Does that count?
Relatedly, I'm not finished with that show yet, but it feels like some midway point between Madoka Magica and Kamen Rider Ryuki in some aspects, so far.
Cure Happy Mecha was a thing, so why not?
guys
utena
it happened
it was a thing
Utena was not a mech.
she was a vehicle though
Har har harhar.
@Nyktos, fourteenwings: I have a vague image of people turning into tiny aircraft with cockpits sized for hamsters. Most likely sentient telepathic ones.
I'm guessing you guys were thinking of something not quite the same.
After War Mahou Shoujo Gundam Hamtaro?
K 06: Background on Mikoto and Tatara, I liked this episode a lot.
I wonder exactly how Tatara knew about Mikoto (does it involve Shiro's older more bishonen evil twin/brother/cousin/whatever?). Aside from them, we had some more doings with the married couple, trying to figure out why Shiro apparently doesn't exist.
Tatara's death was quite sad.
We never see enough of Anna on this show...
This leads right into K 07, which made me notice that they've quit with the overaesthetics. Has it been this way since the plot kicked into gear.
The Blue king is... is he rude? I think so. I think he's politely rude. I like it.
Kuroh is developing nicely. His relationship with Shiro is also developing and I'm glad Shiro trusts him despite Kuroh being ready to murder him at any point in time.
Neko's powers are pretty well done, I never thought episode 2 would actually amount to something of value. I hope we see Kukuri again (I mean the last time we see her is a prolonged panty shot >_>) because I liked her character bouncing of Shiro.
So far, I really like this show, I'm surprised it turned out the way it did because I wasn't expecting much, I hope it continues being this solid.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't a joke.
'Cause like...
Utena actually turned into a car for the last third of the movie.
Pretty sure vandro's laughing more because I lumped cars with military-style vehicles, seeing as he actually watched Utena and all. Probably. or at least i'm pretty sure he knows about the car
I was thinking more Macross than Gundam, since (at least from what I seen), Macross robots have jet forms that actually look like jet aircraft, rather than just a shape that suggests one. I could be wrong about this, since I'm not familiar with mecha anime that much.
Hey, didn't KARAS have a guy that could turn into a tiny jet?
So, I just read the latest Naruto chapter.
Just when I thought there was no way to get a more ridiculously powerful villain than the current one without resorting to implausible measures, they did... this.
Macross makes more sense, but After War Gundam X just came to me for some reason. Probably since I haven't watched much Macross.
Naruto's latest chapter... the Orochimaru/Sasuke & Pals thing as a whole was really crazy to begin with, though I didn't think it would go this far.
I just hope they remember that the third hokage is supposed to be the greatest ninja of all time, even if it involves some silliness due to the series' power creep.
He wasn't the greatest of all time- he was the strongest Hokage (which is also debatable, given that although Sarutobi was stronger in terms of ninjutsu and chakra capacity and all, he doesn't have anything hax like Minato's Flying Thunder God technique).
That still leaves a lot of room, especially given the whole Minato has half of Kurama's chakra sealed in him thing.
That we know of.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't, given how (during Orochimaru's invasion) everyone was running around going "oh noes if only the 4th was here he would kick Orochimaru's ass but he's not so fuck".
But then, he isn't exactly in his prime. During his prime, I wonder how he would have matched up against Minato?
Dat new Naruto chapter...wow.
