Well, to be fair, there are other reasons to watch The Avengers besides being interested on the set up (Namely, Joss Whedon)
Joss Whedon indeed. Tony and Bruce interacting was quite nice.
Also I find it sad that the movie did nothing with Hulk's villains, he already has two out there, if captured.
Speaking of Joss Whedon, thanks dude, I really appreciate the fact that our introduction to one of two named female characters (the Black Widow) involved her being tied to a chair, wearing a short, revealing evening gown, and being slapped in the face, and our introduction to the only other named female character (Pepper Potts) involved her wearing short shorts and flirting with Tony! And the Black Widow's main plotline also revolves around her relationship with Hawkeye! Thanks a bunch!!

Maria Hill is a character, yannow.
Was she named? I had no idea that that particular character was Maria Hill.
They mentioned her name enough for me to remember it. *shrug*
...It's a movie...the primary reason people should go to see a movie is because...HOLY SHIT...they want to see it...
Does anybody really need a reason other than 'Hulk smashes'?
It is if they didn't even want to watch The Incredible Hulk.
It's more than that, it's a turning point for hyperlink cinema and continuity driven films in general.
And I thought I was the forum hipster.
Correct answer is that we're all hipsters, of course.
Fuck yeah!
I can't be a hipster when I am a latino that loves Saint Seiya to bits.
That's kinda like criticizing people for watching Citizen Kane for not watching Orson Welles' Othello beforehand, don't you think? I mean, it's an innovative (as innovative as a film can be outside of its actual script and presentation, anyway) self contained film that is also the conclusion of a few arcs that were established before. It's not really just there for the fans, but for people who want to get into the Marvel Universe to enjoy and taste. And really, if it gets more people to read comics, then I'm a happy Juan.
Trolling on my part aside, I'm honestly not invested enough in any of the characters to feel a burning need to watch any of their individual movies to be more "in" on The Avengers, especially since I had other things to do in the time leading up to its release. And I didn't really need those films to make sense of it anyway. Is that so wrong?
I just came back from watching the movie with friends. Holy shit, that was awesome. I don't like Buffy or Angel, but I got to give Joss Whedon credit, he did an amazing job.
Though admittedly, even though the movie was great, my favorite part of the experience was the guys who were dressed as Thor and Loki- and when we talked to them, they said they were going to go see "Pirates: Band of Misfits."
Just got back from the cinema.
It's a wonderful film! I particularly liked how I could simply watch it without knowing practically anything about the other films but still understand the conflict at hand. There were certainly bits that referenced the other films, but they rarely impeded on the plot.
We are no longer on speaking terms
Not really. It's a standalone movie, the same as the others; the others just add context to it. For example, watching Thor will inform you about Loki's motivations, and Thor's dynamic with him.
^ I know. I was more responding to vandro than making a general statement to the thread.
But I wanted to say it anyway.
Fair enough.
like commander, like second officer
that's right, bro
Look at me, does anything in this face tells you you are wrong?
I understand people can do whatever with their time, it still irks me though. Also, burning need to watch them up to the release? Most of those films were release in previous summers.
Just got back from the movie
HOLY SHIT GUYS REMEMBER WHEN IRON MAN AND THOR FOUGHT IN THE WOODS
REMEMBER WHEN AGENT COULSON BLASTED LOKI THROUGH A WALL
REMEMBER WHEN BRUCE BANNER TURNED INTO HULK AT WILL AND PUNCHED AN ALIEN FISH MONSTER
REMEMBER WHEN CAPTAIN AMERICA TOLD THE POLICE TO DO SOMETHING AND THEY DIDN'T LISTEN TO HIM AND THEN HE BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF SOME ALIENS AND THEN THEY LISTENED TO HIM
REMEMBER WHEN LOKI WAS GLOATING ABOUT HOW HE WAS A GOD AND THEN HULK JUST BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM
REMEMBER WHEN THE ALIEN DUDE WAS TALKING TO HIS BOSS AND THEN HE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT DEATH AND THEN HIS BOSS TURNED HIS HEAD AND HIS BOSS WAS THANOS
One thing just bugs me though: who the hell were the aliens? I thought that they were the Skrulls for like 1/2 of the movie.
So, do you think Thanos is going to be the main baddie for Avengers 2 or is this a build up for their Nova Corps or Guardians of the Galaxy film?
Or possibly both?
^Marvel couldn't use Skrulls in a movie since they're technically Fantastic Four villains and so owned by Fox. So they used the Chitauri, which are basically not-skrulls.
I have said before...Lowly creatures. They are the Ultimate Marvel version of the Skrulls, known as the Chitauri.
Don't think Nova is popular enough for his own film.
^Wait, they're the Skrulls? Aw man, that is some wasted potential right there.
