Yeah, I'm not exactly a fan of fan-pandering (if that makes sense lol) either.  I like it when character archetypes grow naturally out of a story's needs.  Thing is, though, it's more of an "I know it when I see it" thing--more an estimation of the creators' motives than something one can easily pinpoint.

  • Like... 99% of fiction is made to please the fanbase.  Not that that necessarily means it's good, but just that it's a little unfortunate if you can't enjoy things that are made for that reason... >.>

    ^^ True.

^ I would strongly disagree with that assessment. There are plenty of works that are made for the art of it, even if there needs to be some market for them to get greenlit in the first place.

Also, I'm not incapable of liking a work with fanservice at all. I just tend to like things that are a bit more... arty. And that's not to say that the two cannot intersect, either.

That's a gross exaggeration. Fiction's made to communicate and sometimes that involves pleasing the audience and giving them something you know they like, but the fact is that fiction is normally made with the intention of tell a story with elements that please the author first and foremost.

There's a certain awareness of what fanbases of various series and media expect, among all savvy creators.

That alone doesn't make it pandering.

Pandering is like...well, there's a difference between someone giving you a gift you really wanted because they knew you'd appreciate it and someone purposely gifting you something that you like because they know you'll lap it up.  That's the sort of difference.  It's the difference between treating someone as an individual human person versus treating someone as a set of characteristics some of which are orders waiting to be fulfilled.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

Pandering is like... 70% of visual novel anime?

I have this feeling like even if I don't watch Dog Days 2 I can go on happily with my life. It's just so... bland.

    But it's just like Nanoha!

...except... without interesting characters... or plot... or... anything.  Also more animal-ear people, which wouldn't normally be bad but after learning that the creator also made Wanko to Kurasou (eroge about pets that conveniently look exactly like humans) it suddenly seems a bit creepier... >.>

Though I think it's still at least watchable (at least, based on the first season and first episode of the second), but yeah it's not really very good.

If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

It also has that, so... let that influence you as it will.

(Should probably tag it NSFW, because I would hate to let my bosses see me watching that.)

  • You can change. You can.

Wanko to Kurasou (eroge about pets that conveniently look exactly like humans)

i probably shouldn't find the fact that it's called "Wanko" so amusing.

  • edited 2012-07-26 01:03:00

That's actually a really cool transformation sequence, or it would be if not for all the CG.

Of course it's also a really H transformation sequence and the character is like 13, so... >.>

^ Oh, it's definitely amusing.  I've made plenty of jokes about it back when I first found out about it.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

It would have been really cool if it didn't make me feel like I was watching porn.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

That looks at least three times sketchier than Nanoha transformation sequences.

  • Nanoha's transformation in the first movie has nipple shadows.

So make sure you at least take that into account before saying that... >.>

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

At least it doesn't have tentacles disintegrating a girl's clothes. :|

  • edited 2012-07-26 01:51:45

    True.

And yet, somehow I'm less creeped out by that than by Saint October's transformation sequences... (I guess this video is also NSFW probably, though it does not feature nudity or tentacles)

    Also...

(Un?)fortunately, the first transformation sequence (as in, first in the show.  Not either of the ones I embedded here) is not nearly as creepy as the two I posted (though it's still pretty weird).

There is love everywhere, I already know

Note to self: Never watch Saint October ever.

Maybe that way I can get those images out of my head...

@Rebecca's Transformation Sequence: When I saw episode 1 of Dash that was definitely not what I expected it to look like. I could take the insane "Oh! My outfit just seemed to disappear for no reason! Better get within breathing distance of our darling hero for no reason!" moments but that's just pushing my buttons (Well, more than the really creepy Rico fanservice).

  • A Mind You Do NOT Want To Read

Okay, I would like to thank this thread for helping me make the honourable choice of not watching Dog Days after all.

Also I already have a fortunate tendency to try and completely avoid any series where all the main female characters have an extremely young appearance, and so far Strawberry Marshmallow and Bunny Drop have been the only two exceptions to this.

  • edited 2012-07-26 11:06:01

Those transformation sequences are actually what first convinced me to watch Saint October... >.>

This is silly. (EDIT: Well, it might be silly.  It's silly if you're just doing that to avoid loli fanservice, because in that case it'd be better to just... avoid shows with loli fanservice and not also end up avoiding non-fanservicey shows you might otherwise like)

    On a totally different subject:

Has anyone watched/read Busou Renkin?  And if so... is it any good?  This girl's sword things are really cool, and so now I kind of want to watch it because of that... >.>  On the other hand, main character guy looks like a generic main character guy.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

I read the manga when I was like 13. Loved it at the time, but then, I was 13, so that's not particularly impressive.

  • a little muffled

I was going to watch that show, but I never got around to it.

    Here, There, Everywhere

I've heard that it's a pretty decent shounen fighting series with some nice animation. If that's your bag, go for it.

So, started watching Monster again. Pure concentrated awesome.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

Listen, Haruyuki-kun. You are fast. You will become faster than anyone else. Faster than me, and the other Kings as well. Speed is truly Burst Linker’s greatest power.

From the Accel World LN. So not only is he the first flying avatar, he's also mentally faster than all the kings. I wonder how the final episode will end, with him reaching Level 10 by looking at his special meter the wrong way?

It was foreshadowed (Kid did play a glorified virtual Squash game every lunch time for who knows how long) but for it to start mattering in such an important way is kind of... pulled out of our author's nether-regions.

  • If that's your bag, go for it.

It's really not, but as long as it's like... decent within its genre I figure I might as well try it.  Though of course, like I said, the only reason I want to watch it is because of one character design, so... >.>

So, started watching Monster again. Pure concentrated awesome.

    >70+ episodes

    >not a magical girl series

    >lolnope

is pretty much my thought process whenever I think about watching Monster.

  • Kichigai birthday!!
    >He doesn't know that halfway through the series it's revealed that Johan is a cute girl playing detective with her friends and the show turns into a SOL from that moment.

Shit DYRE, I didn't know you were such a pleb
