  • Well, if you ask the Serbs and Hutus...

    Woki mit deim Popo.
If talking about the Serbs, you mean that time when the Turks depopulated Kosovo of it's Serb people?
  • How do you make Turkish Coffee?

You kill thousands of Armenian beans and then lie about it for a hundred years.

Hell, history books still like to pretend it wasn't an atrocity.

Which is why I felt so confused when reading a US History book in high school, at all of the very important massacres the US military had in order to actually expand the american territory and what not, and how they were never even mentioned. I mean, like, it's not embarassing to admit that you had an absolute victory over an enemy that resulted in almost no casualties on your side. You didn't just escort all of the resistant tribes onto the reservation, and where did those other 300,000 resistant few happen to go?

question: Do german history books ever mention the Holocaust?

Yeah. Germany apparently makes a big deal about educating people about how horrible the Nazis were. It's probably up there in terms of the most anti-Nazi countries on the planet.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
....I kind of feel very uncomfortable now concerning everything I learned about US History now.

Well, Germany also breeds many neo-Nazis, so.

    So does Russia.

^^Yes, but being a Nazi is illegal there, so that's at least something.
  • @Miij: Did you happen to notice what I mentioned about our Gone With The Wind page? Did it make you feel any better?

    Patrol Time
Vorpy; The things the U.S. has done for money, power, and land would make you sick.

Personally, I'd like it if Eddie got someone to replace him as admin and Eddie just focused on coding the site, but that may not happen. I wouldn't say he's drunk on power, but I'd like to see a different admin around or something

I could not agree with this more.  I think he has gone fucking nuts and has not clue what he is doing any more.  It would be nice if Janitor would help but she has real life stuff with her career keeping her ever busy.  The only other admin died.  What we need is simply more admins with a variety of experiences willing to work on tropes and let Eddie just sit quietly in the background.

Mind you, Eddie should take the Ross Scott approach: Make a post or something asking for help with something.

Myself and others have suggest this approach in the past and it was sort of quietly ignored.  I know we have people skilled in writing code, working with sites, and honest to god experienced moderators/admins

To be a bit blunt, ballsier moderation. Moderation that dares oppose Eddie more often, that is. I feel at times as if the mods were Eddie's cronies rather than Eddie's "council", so to speak.

The two mods that come closest to this I think are  Blackcat and BobbyG.  They want to do things differently but it is like their hands are tied because they are both relatively new to the mod club.

And either bring in a new admin (Or an old one, AKA Janitor) or Eddie stepping down from his post. He's far too unfit for the work, I believe. His wiki is infamously badly coded, and his decisions are just reactions to whatever trend pops up without any foresight in mind and he doesn't reverse them until the worse possible outcome has happened. Not to mention that he's authoritative when it's uncalled for (See: Yuri Genre Debacle) and he lets consensus rule when is also uncalled for (Troper Tales comes to mind, imo)

It is even better when he ignores consensus and does what he wants.  Granted if he used this approach wisely he could be doing the site a lot of good.  Yeah we need a new admin and probably a new coder.

Also, he's unfair to any criticism, doesn't care for it, believes that anyone outside the wiki is just a "hater" and as such doesn't deserve to be listened to, and believes that problems will go away if you put it in a place where you can't look at them. (Again, Troper Tales)

This has become a very serious issue and one that will likely sooner rather then later, lead to the fall of the site.  Prior to that a mass exodus.

Why wouldn't they be afraid of him? He's fairly unpredictable, and he can take their mod powers away.

Very unpredictable.  In one thread on criticism of the wiki I think it was.  We got him to supposedly agree to sit back more and let the mod team handle things.  Of course that didn't last long.  In less then a month he was back at it again.  If it turned out that there was too much for them, for him to find more mods to tackle the site.  I feel the site is under staffed in the moderator department.

I think the various mods would give a shit if they could actually make meaningful changes or had something more solid in the rules department to work with.

We have rules of some sorts but you have to dig around for them and only a couple list possible punishments.
A solid set of codified rules that the mods follow and enforce with regularity.  Ie.  Clearly define what you mean and stick by it.  Tweak the rules as necessary or allow mods some flexibility with the rules up to a point.

The more I look at the SA rules set up the more I like it.

Also, Google Bans need to stop being handed out like candy, and he needs to learn about using goddamn email adresses.

The problem with using email addresses is that the accounts that exist don't have them attached.

I agree with all of you, but this thread is becoming a bit of a circlejerk. Nobody is offering an opposing point of view.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
It would be nice if the thread on SA was still talking to us.

^^ Yes, but without them the problem is that a guy like Polack can go and troll for hours without being noticed.
  • @Meeble: I missed that one. The thing is, it shouldn't be in the YMMV tab. The ENTIRE BOOK was meant to be pro-slavery propaganda. The only people whose mileage varied are white supremacists, and why would be we pandering to them?
  • You can change. You can.
As we mentioned before, the tab has a grossly misleading name. It's basically "How the work affects and is affected in real life."

    Belief
@Inkblot: that's kind a recurring problem associated with TvTropes though, We could try to bring this up at Tvtropes to get opposing viewpoints, but most likely it'd get shot down.

^^^The trope belonged in the YMMV tab, but the point of the book should be in the description.
  • What's the point of having it as another tab in the first place, then? If the entire point of a work has to be taken off the main work page because someone thought that horrible mess was good idea, why do we keep it around in the first place? It's actively deterring from the quality of the pages, especially when it isn't even what it implies it is (sometimes).

    ^I think I ninja'd you with an answer :P
  • Let's change the Birth of a Nation page, too. Racism is subjective.
  • edited 2011-08-03 19:18:40
As I mentioned earlier, we have more written on the racism and sexism present in the book than even Wikipedia's entry does.

Values Dissonance is an Audience Reaction trope, and all Audience Reaction tropes are to be listed in either the Trivia or YMMV tab.

Very likely, all of that information was on the main page originally, and when the Audience Reactions got flagged to be moved, no one thought to review the description to see if any changes needed to be made.

If you have a suggestion of a line or two that could be added to the description in a way that would be satisfactory, I'll add it for you.

Yep. We've been cross-forum talking with SA and discussing how to improve this site, as well as how to improve TV Tropes (although that's mostly localized in the other thread now).
