Counterclock, I have an example from something of mine. This is something of a Female Gaze though.

The very first shot we get of this guy, right when he is introduced, is of his ass. He's bent over, shaking it to some song, and these chicks walk up. It does say a bit about his character, plus it also allows for a joke. .
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
    Like, which, counterclock?
  • Vandro... I ain't got it backwards. I know what you mean. This is just a communicative blip.

Female is essentially the "default sex" ... with most of the useful parts.  Male is what results if it is shunted off the female path early on... and the bits which would have been useful end up essentially as practically vestigial.

NOT that birds are necessarily different, despite the whole W/Z thingie they got going, and the difference about which one has the two copies and which has different.... They just ended up going about it backwards for some funny reason that I haven't bothered looking into. I mean heck old-times had it dictated by temperature and stuff... so... bleh.
  • Tell me one reason why seeing a character's ass in A series like Death Note could possibly be added and be essential to the story and plot...

It's kind of silly to suggest that a particular element of a work shouldn't be there unless it is absolutely essential to the plot.  As it turns out, not every single work of fiction is really about telling a story (sometimes the plot is just there as something to base jokes on, or sometimes the main point of a movie is really just in having a lot of action scenes, with other things being extraneous), and even for those that are, you shouldn't necessarily expect that every single element is a vital part of it.  You could take most of the jokes out of any given comedy movie and end up with a less funny version of the same story, but what would be the point?

  • I watch films for violence or characters getting their lives screwed up, basically.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I'm not sure literal biological details are relevant to this discussion. After all, we're observing something that's primarily social, even if informed by biological imperative.

I don't see much issue with fanservice as a concept, but its execution should be brought into question. At best, it should flow naturally into the work, such as being tied to characterisation, and be used sparingly. At worst, it can be pretty insulting to everyone at once.

So, SotiCoto, you consider childbearing to be more important than anything else?

Fanservice on itself, even in large quantities doesn't bother me much, other things like the sexism in characterization do bother me, I liked bakuman, but after a point, the sexism levels were too much for me to handle. In Death Note it didn't bother me much because, really, the story itself didn't focus on the already small female portion of the cast.
  • @Dyre just because hundreds of other series add unnecessary things to their work doesn't make it good.

It can appeal to people, sure.

and those people can overlook the flaws of the work.

But it still can bog down when it doesn't belong or fit naturally.

What Madass Alex said. Fanservice can be used sometimes, for the right reasons, and at the right times.
  • Childbearing more important?

It comes down to females doing the bulk of the investment in the next generation, while the necessary male contribution is comparatively minor. Human society has developed in such a way as to essentially have the males pick up much of the slack (which for some reason lead to being in charge at some level)...  but essentially, men only exist because the other half of the genome splicing has to go somewhere. Little wonder in many bugs, the male is just a tiny thing that exists to fuck and then die. Some never even eat.

But, humans are different from bugs.

Since humans have been around, Men have lived longer than females because of child bearing.

Is it any wonder why women stop being able to have babies around 60, but men can have children until the day they die?
  • The female system is a bit more complicated than the male system, so it isn't very surprising.
I mean naturally humanity doesn't eat the males after copulation. It isn't helpful nor necessary. Males are marginally bigger than the females in this species due to secondary roles besides, so it wouldn't work very effectively.

Life just goes with what works, really. Spiders and the like don't have a complicated social life... so the male really is completely useless except as a snack after his business is done.  Placental mammals are a bit of a funny case due to the weird way in which the young is allowed to begin its maturation... which sorta puts even more strain on the female parent and forces the males to perform a more extensive support role.

Vivi: There's a set amount of ovum that every female is born with. Males produce sperm every day.

Right, I knew that. I was arguing that human males aren't like bugs, born to fuck, then die.
  • Human males are more like fuck, then slave, then die.
  • Hmmm,

Looking at society, I don't really see it.
  • You can change. You can.
bluh bluh fansewrvice is not inherently bad or inherently good bluh bluh catwoman is all about titillating both the readership and the observers bluh bluh i'd still argue that male fansevice is not inherently wrong if it befits the character bluh bluh alex said it already wbut i don't give a shit bluh bluh homestuck talk bluh bluh machine guns bluh bluh david bowie bluh bluh TTGL bluh bluh boobs bluh bluh wheeeeeee

Um...guys? Yin and Yang? Bolt goes in the nut? Two unlike forces working together to create a result? You can't tell me you've never heard of this concept.

You can't say thay the male body is just undeveloped female bits because boys are born biologically male and there is no breakdown of metamorphosis in human beings (like the axototl) that spawns the degenerate male.

Men have their tackle for a reason. Likewise do women. One is not necessarily more important than the other because both bring what is needed for new life to the birthing table.
  • I do hope you're not bringing the human fallacy of "value" into this. I mean like the whole "better" / "worse" sorta thing.
Both parts ARE necessary... but one just plays a whole helluva shorter necessary part than the other.
  • I can't stand people who enjoy things without realizing its flaws.

I mean honestly, if the reason you enjoy something is because "there's nothing wrong with it" ..

    That's not enjoying a work, that's denial
  • You can change. You can.
Wep, I'm proud to say that I know exactly what's wrong with everything I enjoy, in an objective sense. I just enjoy those things because they appeal to me. And there's nothing wrong with liking things because they appeal to you, is it?
  • Enjoying something is just a sensation. Brain-drugs. Who the hell cares whether it is justified or where precisely it comes from?   This is all just meaningless distraction as we await death anyway.
  • You can change. You can.
    wheeee, nihilism

What I'm trying to say is that ideally both parties not only suffer differently, but they also labor differently.

And if "value" is a human fallacy, then misinterpreting anatomy is a fallacy as well.

I care, Soti. And if that's good enough for me, that's good enough for the rest of us who still see a point.
  • @Juan, what I mean is, the people who enjoy things and deny what's wrong with it. and hold it up as perfect and special.

    I will reccomend Buffy t.v.s

but that doesn't mean I post on TvT saying

    "Super perfect special"
  • You can change. You can.
I wouldn't say any work is perfect, but I'd definetly say that there are a lot of works tht are special.

Special being unique or excellent, of course.

    Also, internet hyperbole, etc
  • Well, Krak... if caring about where the drugs come from or why gets you more brain-drugs... then.... sure... whatever. Seems to me like folks just want another reason to think of themselves as "better" than others... which once again doesn't mean a damned thing to me.
My "happy brain drugs" are wired directly into my "paranoia brain drugs"... which tend to neutralise them within milliseconds. Don't really care much for either.
  • @Juan. some people do hyperbole, but don't think that it's not out of the realm of possibility for some people to really believe that something doesn't have flaws, if you do, I will slap you.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
