Blind Love for Entertainment

IJBM.

Now, this is something I have experienced, in terms of Harry Potter.

But as I have grown up, I have found that save for a few things (most things Miyazaki does) the more I love something, the more I have a deep rooted hate for it.

One Piece -- my all time favorite manga, is formulaic, sexist, and characters rarely get any proper development.

Death Note -- FUCKING SEXIST

Bakuman -- poor plotting, and have I mentioned SEXIST?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- Joss Whedon is an abusive evil bastard.

...

CONNOR! I LOVED YOU! ;_;

anywho...

I could go on and on, but I have to say, it almost bothers me when people act as if something has no flaws. I dunno why, since I'm still annoyed by people who perceive flaws that I do not, but it just feels...

I dunno, blind.

Like, there is a person, who claimed that when you read something that's sexist or racist, you should remove your own morals, or otherwise you won't be able to enjoy the story. How literary analysis falls into that, is beyond me.

So...yeah. IJBM.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Death Note -- FUCKING SEXIST
The second-smartest (or arguably smartest) character in the series is female. She only got killed off because the author realized he'd sent her up against Light too early and if she didn't die immediately, she'd expose him and the series would end.
  • JC: No, you misunderstand. I lovED him. As in, I loved baby him. THEN WHEDON WENT AND BETRAYED ME.
  • They're somethin' else.
Sexist is a four letter word.
  • How does having the second smartest character be female autonatically prove that it's not sexist?

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Wait, is Death Note sexist, or are characters just sexist?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Because the general argument that I've seen for Death Note being sexist is that the female characters are useless.

    Forzare: Yes.

INUH: They are. They had one smart one, and not only was she retiring because she was getting married, but unlike say, Mello who was also killed for knowing too much, she did NOTHING to move the plot along, and it's not like they ever tried again to get a good girl character in there.
  • You can change. You can.
but whatever, I don't see why Joss Whedon having a penchant for character killing makes him a particularly bad writer.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Still, I think given that Naomi Misora is literally the only person to figure out without being told that Kira can kill by methods other than heart attacks, she deserves some credit.
  • I'm somewhat puzzled as how something that hasn't got plot or characterization going for it can be your favourite anything, but hey.

INUH: Some credit does not make it not sexist. And she was really really easily fooled by Kira, rather annoyingly so.

    Noim: Because I love it.

JC: There is nothing wrong with killing characters. But killing for the sake of killing is like having a sex scene for the sake of having a sex scene.

^^ Eh.  Most of my favorite video games, at least, have no plot whatsoever and essentially no characters either.  Though, yeah, that doesn't work so well for other media.
  • Because I love it.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, like I said in the whited-out text, that was only because she was about to completely derail the plot by defeating Kira.

But yeah, they did fail to bring in a good female character after that.
  • Man, it's a good thing that I only have an unconditional love for objectively flawless things, like Code Geass.
  • Well, I find the arcs interesting, the foreshadowing excellent, the gags wonderfully timed, the fights well thought out, and a good use of the "awesome" meter, with little to no asspulls.

    Better?
  • $80+ per session
Question, is there any criteria for a good female character that is different from a good male character?
  • You can change. You can.
JC: There is nothing wrong with killing characters. But killing for the sake of killing is like having a sex scene for the sake of having a sex scene.

I'm conflicted about this, because, see, I think that killing in most Whedon shows is done in oder to increase the drama and put the characters in a zone where Whedon can write what he knows (Depressive grieving angst) when it comes to drama.

For one hand, I'd say yes, it's stupid to kill needlessly, but the deaths serve a dramatic purpose. Each and every single one of them work as either a trigger or a middle point in Joss Whedon stories.

Well, I disagree with pretty much all of that, but the fact that you have a clear idea of what you like about it does make it better.
  • edited 2011-09-28 21:31:50
Oh, having an awareness of the flaws of the things you love is better than a lack thereof.
  • You can change. You can.
Agree with both Bowser on a business suit and Beetle Ranger.
  • Vivi: No, criteria only changes when you get token minorities. If you have a lot of them, criteria is constant.
  • Um, semi Thread Hop...I don't have blind love for any media. It's very liberating and saves lots of time that might otherwise be spent arguing. It also makes other people seem kind of stupid at times.

My inability to form strong opinions on most things is both a great strength and a great weakness...
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Maybe I've had too much to drink but my comment was going to sound a lot like Myrm's.
  • Clean your room little Billy
I can relate in a way. The more I identify with something, the more I want to attack it and it's fans. Got some wires crossed in my mental processes somewhere, I suspect.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
Having just now discovered this topic... most of what the OP says comes off as "looking for something to complain about."

Seriously the only thing you have against Death Note is "it's sexist?" That's like not even a real complaint.
