  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Did it simmer and then explode?

I honestly haven't been around much in the last few days, so I don't know if I missed critical parts of all this or not. Sorry.

Flirting. Like every other one of our fucking threads.
Wow. Cry some more why don't you? Not every other thread is flirting. I see 13 threads on the first page that do not compose of that.

Furthermore, the flirting is kind of creepy to those of us who aren't involved in it.

I must say this. That is a very stupid thing to be creeped out by. Very stupid. Lolicon or threats of violence or stalking is something to be creeped out by. People flirting on the internet, sincerely or otherwise? No.

One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^ Well, I mean that no-one said a thing about it until this thread, and now we've got one or two pages of gnashing of teeth. So there's obviously concerns no-one was voicing and then took this opportunity to let it all out at once.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I never said anything because I never really payed attention to what other people thought. I mostly just left threads when the flirting started.

Yeah, I probably should have said something, but nothing I can do about that now.
  • A conversation about how this thread has derailed is a derail itself, and feel this is something we should discuss on a designated thread.

Should I lock and we take this conversation elsewhere?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Let me respond civilly.

Creepiness is subjective. If flirting can be taken to PMs, then why not? It hurts nothing and nobody. And the fact that the over/under ratio of this sort of thing is significant, as well as the fact that it has been going on or at least a week, is what bothers me, personally at least.

^^ Well, using a horribly derailed thread to discuss the derail seems kinda poetic to me. Besides, we're all on the same page here.

Let's lock it before everyone gets insane with anger.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I did not personally see it as a problem until someone else brought it up, at which point I thought back and, well, it is kind of annoying.

However... Saying that "you should have all complained instead" is kind of placing the blame on the people who are being annoyed by it instead of the people who instigated said behaviour.

The blame lies on the people who did the wrong thing, not those who didn't speak up about it annoying them. Derailing multiple threads into being about the same thing is bad form, full stop.
  • Basically, you really should have known yourself when to stop. You also need to start considering everyone else and how they may not want to read the same thing over and over again across multiple threads. Self-control, basically.
  • @Cygan:I have a question, just a simple question.

How many people flagged my "Lol, flirty derails" as Creepy/Offensive?

How many people flagged my "Lol, flirty derails" as Creepy/Offensive?

None. That's just what people have said in here, so it's what I added to my post.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I'm not trying to shift responsibility here, but at the same time it would've been better to bring it up beforehand rather than allowing the vitriol to build up. What I'm talking about isn't where the responsibility lies, but the way the reaction was handled.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I cannot take a look at the threads here and instantly decide when something is a problem, if only because I have more things on my mind than considering whether the action I saw here is bad.

I cut down problems when I see them. However, I don't always see the problem until it's brought to my attention. I'm pretty dumb like that.

This isn't about you, Cygan, but the general reaction here. As staff, your position is a little different anyway. Essentially, I think the last couple of pages have been too extensive in their criticism for something that shouldn't have earned that much ire, even if it wasn't always appropriate or considerate.
  • You can change. You can.
That's why we have an userbase that can speak up when they see a problem, rather than shutting up and going "Bluh, boring"

Which is, again, the problem at hand. For a site about bitching, we don't bitch when it's convenient to do so.
  • For those of you interested, I am going to cut down the "Lol Flirty derail" behavior, just as I said in my first post addressing what this thread has become.

But the truth of the matter is, I really didn't know it was causing this amount of discontent, and I apologize for that.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
At the very least, though, I would like it if people used the Flag system more when they find something to be bad.
  • I agree with Alex.

If the people involved don't realize that their behaviours are somehow upsetting to others (and as flirty banter seems pretty tame/innocuous, I can see how this would happen), then at the very least they should be tapped on the shoulder so they have the opportunity to change, not suddenly have to go on the defense in the middle of a thread full of said upset persons, having had no idea they were being offensive.

Judge someone by how they handle themselves after they're informed of it, at least, and not before.

^^^ On that subject, I'd like it if the mobile site had a flag button. :l

    ^^^^ Thanks.

I never really realized that it bugged anyone else, and I didn't want to be the one killjoy who ruins it for everyone. I need to be better about that mindset.

GloriousLeaders over-reaction and everyone's pissy attitude on page 4 is not worth it. Seriously.

Also, turning every thread into a flirty RP is stupid.

I feel like getting this out now:
Posting *gnaws* in the Mega X Shit Circuit is fucking annoying. Absolutely fucking annoying, rip-my-hear-out-of-my-head-cough-and-turn-my-mouth annoying. Its to the point where I don't even like seeing your name on that thread anymore. Is that all you ever do? I am going to tell you right here that I don't like it, and I would like for you to stop.

And makes us look like creeps.

Nobody on the outside give a shit about the flirting derails. Nobody outside of this place even mentions this as a defining problem or avenue of embarassment for this site. and then again, why should we care if it makes us to an undefined group of people? Do people look in this thread actively for creepy flirting and go "gee, it sure is creepy flirting around here" and another goes "Mah boi, creepy flirting is what all IJBMers strive for".

It was similar to the Touhou hijacks that were initiated in the old IJBM, and how people vehemently hated the Touhou fandom because of it. This flirting derail stuff was nothing compared to that.

But since everyone wants to be angry then I might as well be too.

Ignorance of their behaviour does not change the fact that their behaviour is still bad, though. We do have a guideline that you should not wilfully derail a thread.

Besides that, it's kind of just basic common courtesy to not derail multiple threads to be flirting between the same few people. It's one of those things that shouldn't even need to be asked.

From where I am standing, Vorpy, you are the one acting pissy and bitching everywhere.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Again, the point isn't that something silly was done multiple times. It's that the reaction that that silliness was even worse than the original problem. If it was annoying/creepy, then whatever, fine, but the answer to that is not to have a little united front against that and have open, personal criticism of those involved.
  • Vorpy, listen to us, you are honestly the only person worked up. Not the mods, not the perpetrators, not the people who don't care about this in the least. Only YOU.
