    I agree.

"If people are trying to discuss something I don't care what the derail is about. They're all equally detrimental to the thing at hand."

Which is why derailing outside of Wonderful Posts is still ill-advised, per the rules. But it would be much appreciated if the topic wasn't always the same, and wasn't always so vapid.

"As if other kinds of derails weren't particularly annoying and as if somehow there were better derails."

Whether or not other derails are annoying, the topics generally aren't as pervasive, at the very least.

"If we're gonna start to complain about how we don't like X kind of derails, then why don't we also complain about Y kind of derails?"

Probably because Y derails aren't nearly as much of a problem as all this flirting going on out in the open, as Cygan said in her last post.

"But I mean if people aren't really being serious in the first place I don't care."

The least they could do is put it where everyone else doesn't have to see it and more inclusive, productive discussions can take place.

If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I'm fairly sure this is a reason behind the multi-people PM's, at the least.
  • You can change. You can.
Very well, then. As you so desire and all that, I suppose.

But I hope this means that when it derails into a shitty thread where we discuss LOTR, Shonen, or start posting stupid images in which others are not interested we get to call you on it. Because honestly, I'm getting tired of how some things fly and others pass simply because they're more prominents.

So...whatever. I know I did wrong. But I also know that others did wrong. And it abhors me that those who also did wrong are being ignored or whatever simply because what we did was getting more prominent.

Was I getting annoyed at the thing? Yes. I hate how Malkavian would always flirt with Clock and how he didn't desist even though the gag was boring. I tried telling him via jokes to not do it anymore, but it seemed to encourage him and I admit that it may have been my fault for not noticing. I also hated how my name was being brought up even more often in those stupid gay pseudofics and what have you to the point I told Saturn to not put me in his erofic/liveblog thing.

But the fact of the matter that this gets full mod attention and the other annoying shit doesn't? That I don't understand. The fact that a LOTR derail where only two people participate is somehow better than a derail where at least 3-5 people were enjoying themselves is better irks me to no end.

Don't like it? Understandable. But don't complain when you do the same shit

That's all I have to say on the matter.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    -_-

I couldn't give a fuck how many people were enjoying a derail. I honestly don't care when one or two threads derail into whatever, I just click out and go about my business.

That's not what anyone's complaining about.

What we're complaining about is how fucking often you do it. You don't do it in one fucking thread. You've done it in multiple threads over the past however long. I've had to click out of a dozen threads because lol more Counterclock/Juan/Malkavian flirting.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
So have we all had our bitchfits? We've all expressed ourselves and going further threatens to move this into either semantics or worse, so I think everyone should make a cup of tea, chill out, jerk off and come back with happy feelings.

I guess I can agree on the PM point. I suppose I'm just somewhat disappointed that some
derails are treated as better than others, when they both do that same
thing: derailing. And to expand, it irks me to see people participating in
derails and then calling other people out on them.

    Ninja'd by big bro.

(highlighted everything because I clicked something weird, sorry)

As someone who has also wronged, I share the sentiment that it's annoying that some derails are merely glossed over. But problematic derails are still problematic, flirty ones especially so. Worse yet, the flirty ones, a.k.a. the worst ones, are seemingly the most common. That's the problem, I think; some derails really are worse than others, and I'm not saying that because I like certain derails.

For what it's worth, if the general populace agrees, we can come down harder on the less harmful derails as well.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    My thoughts on derails:

Intentional derails are annoying, and should really stop.  If someone intentionally derails a topic that's completely unrelated into LOTR or flirting those are both bad.  I still hold that the flirting is worse, because it's creepy.

Natural derails, like if a topic is about swords in fantasy settings, and that derails into something like orcs in the Lord of the Rings through natural flow of conversation, that's fine.
  • It's such a grey area. I mean I suppose a little here and there could be considered alright, if it weren't too easy for the derail to overshadow the original thread. And that can happen no matter what the nature of the derail.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Yes, that is essentially what I was saying.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Okay, I've only skimmed this, but the way I see it, the problem isn't "derails happen" so much as "one derail happens in like fifty threads."

    It can.

If everyone wants to cut down on the derails, then I would be fine with that (although I do have to wonder what could even be left to be said about this topic). However, we're coming down on this one because of how often it's been popping up lately, between the same people every time.

    ^ Yes.

This too.  I'd honestly rather read a forced derail about mythology than a forced derail about two or three posters flirting, even if neither is good, and flirting derails are always happening.

Again, my problem is not that this isn't annoying bullshit. Never said otherwise. My problem is that other annoying bullshit doesn't get called on because this is more prominent. Because that's what we always do. We deal with the most prominent problem when it gets too big. We solve it and then let the other little issues boil up again till they explode in our face. And we do nothing but keep on this annoying cycle and still complain about the same essential inherent bullshit about how we're cool and special and we'll become better.

But we won't become better by doing this all the time.

I can't really add much to the topic other than "Yep, that's true."

^ No, not that, the other stuff is true.
  • You can change. You can.
Ah, so you think that the flirty derails are good?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I don't give a crap whether a specific derail is good or bad. I just care about how many threads it happens in.

Then I suggest you speak up and state that you consider this to be a problem. We can't deal with problems we don't think/know are problems.

I myself have no problem with derails in general. It's only when they get persistent that it's bad, to me. If people disagree, though, then I will squash them in general- as long as that's what everyone wants.

    ^ A.K.A that.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Or like how the thread was about a creepy webcomic, then people commented that they would rather deal with going to Mordor than that thing?

One foot in front of the other, every day.
One good thing came of the derail:

Arthurian Legends, the game. But let's not rerail that derail.
  • @Thread:I'll just say this.

If my derails are causing such ire in people, such annoyance, you could've told me in the beginning, instead of passive-aggressively insulting me because of it.

"Hey Counterclock, this isn't making us feel very comfortable, you mind cutting on the behavior a bit?"

"Hey Counterclock, I don't like that all the thread are becoming flirty/creepy, and want to discuss the topic, you mind cutting down on that?"

"This is a mod speaking, I've got several complaints about the topic of your derails, now this isn't technically a warning, just a little 'hey, cut it out ok?' "

Instead, we've derailed this thread AGAIN. onto the entire philosophy of derails for the entire site, just so you can passive-aggressively handle the subject

If you've really got a problem, talk to me, communication people.

If I refuse to listen, talk to the mods.

If I'm truly turning this community into something uncomfortable for everyone else, then the mods have every right to ban me, or suspend me.

As for the subject at hand, It's pretty much gotten through to me, after 2? full pages of spiteful back and forths, that I'm causing the community to become uncomfortable with my derails, I will take this into consideration and cut down on this behavior.

But I ask you this, The whole of IJBM, if you've got a problem, then address it first, because I'm not a mind-reader, I had no idea until now the level of ire that sprung up because of my posts.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I can't speak for everyone, but I'm not angry at anyone at all.

And no problem existed the first time such a derail happened. And it's not really possible to pinpoint a specific time when a problem existed. But at this point, thinking back on the number of times that specific derail has happened, it's clear that those involved in these particular derails need to cut down on it.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Basically as INUH said.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
We could've avoided all of this had I remembered to mention that we already had this thread on the first page.
  • @INUH. Maybe it's clear now that we're examining it, but it obviously wasn't clear to a lot of people involved, myself included.

This is mostly directed towards the people for whom could clearly see it was a problem at the start, yet did not speak their mind clearly, and instead grew bitter because of it.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
But it wasn't a problem at the start. Derails happen. Derails that happen in multiple threads, though, can be an issue.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I think it's a little unfair to let it simmer and then explode, though. Especially when all that ire is directed towards a select few who now probably feel a little on the outside.
