    Easiest way you can tell when you've given up on a site? When you can read the SA thread on it and not feel any urges to defend anything they mock, even the not-particularly-bad stuff, and in fact start to agree with near everything they say.

    I agree, cygan. there's the part of me that wanted to think there was hope, but now, that part just wants Tv Tropes restarted from the beggining.

    Okay, just to get a clear idea, from everyone here, can each of you list your reasons why you think going to TvT is still worthwhile OR not worth going to anymore? Just trying to get a general feel from you guys.

    There's a couple of cool people I can only PM there. Some of the larger threads in Media are entertaining, like the Kingdom Hearts one if you ignore Vanitas' bullshit. Troper Updates is an okay thread, and I do like the Angst thread and being able to help people there.

    On the other hand, the site is rapidly becoming worse and worse. We've managed to get a couple of the Tropes renamed- Nakama, The Mario, The Libby- but all that's accomplished is managing to get a bunch more threads into the TRS, not actually get them good names. We managed to get Troper Tales deleted, but Eddie managed to not only create a new subforum to host them, but he also merged the Discussion pages with them. The site's 'no negativity' policy is rapidly becoming wearisome, as you cannot even edit lolicon manga to give the article a disapproving tone. The 'no complaints' policy on the forum is becoming even more wearisome, as people use it to get your arguments deleted and you told to shut up. Most of the users there are stupid, boring and/or creepy, often all 3, and many of the cooler people on the site are leaving entirely.

    This was my reason for staying for a while, but then I realized that most of them had already jumped ship to IJBM 2 (or 2.1, whatever), and that in the case of those who hadn't, they'd move on anyway.

    Vanitas is this user who does pretty much nothing but spew bullshit every time he opens his mouth.

    He's also the only person in recordeed history to get both me and Legionnaire mad at him at the same time by making several rape jokes that were uncalled for and did nothing but bring up bad memories for me and Legionnaire's boyfriend.

    Yeah, Cygan's basically has it. Though I'm too well entrenched to leave it for good just yet. Hopefully my time in SA will fix that.

    I think I remember Vanitas (the name, at least), but I don't remember anything of that sort. That's actually sort of funny, since tropers like him are a small part of why I decided TvT was shit in the first place.

    Mostly just shitposting, although I've recently managed to hit them on the head hard enough to occasionally get them to actually discuss stuff.

    The three most common things are discussion, image linkings, and people joking around.

    Pros:

    The community is made up of really smart people who're worth talking to at least once.
    The forum's environment, in at least some parts, is decent and enjoyable


    Cons

    The moderation makes harder and harder to enjoy the place, as everything negative is taken away in some misguided attempt to reduce drama and to not seek out balance whenever needed.

    The left side of the forum is one of the most annoying forums. Serious discussions (OTC) are dull, boring, long posty, and the whole place has indeed a libertarian/left winged majority. And the right wing people there are extremists. Which doesn't help.

    Many of the new people, to be completely honest, have at least one major problem, but these people are reassured in their attitude problems instead of being adviced against them. Also, it has sometimes become obvious that the place has become a sort of popularity context. (Speaking of Yackfest exclusively here)

    Media discussions are generally lame and become more about speculation rather than actual understanding of a work. Also, whenever possible, there will be a...majoritarian view of a work. Which makes reading and talking about a work much less enjoyable as everyone seems to go in circles.

    And that's about it for me, really.

    I still plan to keep my account. There are some wonderful people whose company I enjoy and whose posts I enjoy reading, and they are not here (Such as Lucky Revenant and Haven) But the place is broken and there ain't a chance in hell I'll defend it.
