One thing to keep in mind about the personal anecdotes thing is that, by and large, most of the people who use the current Troper Tales don't go to the forums. The forums seem to be anathema to them, for whatever reason.

Besides, one of the arguments used throughout the TT deletion thread was that if people wanted to build community and talk about themselves, the forums were the place to do it.

It will be far easier to police, everything will be in one place, most current TT users won't want to use it, and all trace of personal anecdotes on the Wiki itself will be gone. No matter which way you look at it, this has been a major victory for those of you who worked so hard in the Troper Tales thread. You should be proud of yourselves.
  • It just feels like instead of removing Troper tales, they just took off the sticker of "Troper tales" and said "what? We got rid of troper tales ~points at the sticker in the trash bin~"
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
I've been offline this weekend, so what exactly happened with Troper Tales? It doesn't sound good based on your comment, Clockey.
  • edited 2011-08-15 07:49:20
But that's the thing, they did remove Troper Tales. TT as we know it is dead.

Will people be able to talk about themselves on the forums? Sure. But they already can (and do) talk about themselves on the forums, and to ban such a thing would be ludicrous.

Many on the Pro-TT-Deletion side argued that they should have been using the forums instead of Troper Tales in the first place. So I'm not sure why there's so much resistance to Eddie's plan, especially since he was willing to bend on the Discussion Pages thing.
  • @The_Edge.

    Quoting Fast Eddie.

"Direct people to the discussion page for personal anecdotes. This
message to go directly on the article edit screen, stating
unequivocally that personal anecdotes do not go in the articles. We no
longer talk about 'troper tales.' We talk about personal anecdotes."
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
The thing is, Elbeem, we didn't just want it gone from the Wiki. We wanted the creepiness gone. And sure, this might help. But so would outright deletion, and sending it to the Troper Tales Wiki.

I mean... Why is this new subforum necessary, with that Wiki in place?
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
I see. So while Troper Tales is gone, people who just have to talk about themselves are encouraged to do so in the forums.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Yeah.

Mr. The Edge goes to Washington

So, is this a victory for the pro-TT Deletion faction? Doesn't sound like it.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
I'm not sure of that will solve the problem though. A lot of stuff in the forums goes unreported as it is, and I recall Maddy saying that the forums are harder to moderate than the wiki. So history could very well repeat itself.

Mods: "Congratulations, Troper Tales Deletionists! We're deleting Troper Tales!"

    Pro-TT Deletion Faction: =D

Mods: "Now, if everyone takes a step to the left, let's unveil the new Trope Talks Section! Serves exactly the same function as Troper Tales, except it has a new name! =D"

    Pro-TT Deletion Faction: D=

So... Eddie pulled a fast one on everyone.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
As far as I can see it, yeah.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington

That pisses me off. I had nothing to do with this, but I know that some people were over-anxious about this whole thing. Some people lost sleep over this. You guys put a lot of effort to inform, debate, and push the issue of having Troper Tales on the Wiki. All that work just so Fast Eddie rescind the official vote on the issue but masking it as something else. Fast Eddie just slapped you guys in the face.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
There is a reason some people have now left the site.
  • I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, there.

If you can't see how much of a positive change this is, there's probably nothing that I can say to convince you.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
I'm sure. Didn't Juan say he would leave if Fast Eddie and his Moddies pulled something like this?
  • Some of the people just threw their hands up at trying to make the site better.

"We tried this hard and went this far, but you want to keep it the same for no other reason than 'Amusing and Nostalgia' then so be it, I'll be chatting with the Tvtrope people who listen"

    Something like that.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
It is a positive change, I can agree to that, certainly. Much better than having Troper Tales remain.

It's just, the thing is, that's not what was being voted on. The vote was on whether or not to remove it from the site entirely. An entire other Wiki was set up to host it.

And then... Eddie just... turns around and announces that he's creating a subforum for people to continue posting these tales.

I mean, there's no reason for him to have done this. Tell me, what purpose does it serve? At this point, it can't even hold up the pretence of helping people understand the trope.

It just feels like he's spitting on it. "Okay, I know you were voting on the deletion of Troper Tales. Okay, Troper Tales is being deleted and moved to an off-site wiki. By the way, I am now creating a subforum for people to post their anecdotes in."

Because, in the end, we spent all this time campaigning to get rid of Troper Tales, and in the end, it's still going to be here. It'll be all dressed up in trappings, sure, but the core problem- people wanting to boast about their lives using tropes as a descriptor- is very likely (although not definitely) going to be exacerbated now. And why? What is the reason for this to be here?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I'm sure. Didn't Juan say he would leave if Fast Eddie and his Moddies pulled something like this?

    Juan, explain.
  • Actually, I think I know why Eddie did this.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Then tell us :/
  • I understand why many would be upset about this bait and switch, and
would flounce over it. It was a week long process of arguments and
anxiety, as you could tell merely by how often people reported the
score. The way this was thrown away goes beyond Troper Tales and speaks
    about the site's very foundations.

Though I'm not indignated about this for some (I presume not good)
reason, and won't be any less active on the forums (or get a handle
without the word "troper" in it).
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
With all this drama I've been seeing, there seems to a harsh life lesson somewhere in there.

Somehow I thought something like this might happen.  I still don't think that the "solution" actually addresses the problem that caused the TT to go bad in the first place.
  • Here he is, In the "How to fix Troper Tales mini-thread" that got started by someone who honestly thought that trying to scrub it up 3 times "wasn't Enough" of an effort.
  • He just didn't want to abandon it for whatever reason, To him Troper Tales isn't a failed premise, It's a great premise that "Didn't Work"
  • You can change. You can.
I'm sure. Didn't Juan say he would leave if Fast Eddie and his Moddies pulled something like this?

No, I said I would stay and I'll just won't help with the wiki anymore.

    Except for INUH's projects because...

    ummmmmmm...

    again, why
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Because you're helping INUH out in his attempts, not the Wiki directly.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Because INUH is a bro, and bros stick together.
  • You can change. You can.
Because you're helping INUH out in his attempts, not the Wiki directly.

wait, what, no, i would never have such a rational justification.

Because INUH is a bro, and bros stick together.

yes, this sounds like the kind of reason I'd do stuff for.

    Which is kinda retarded...>_>
