Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I liked this thread better when it was about Something Awful or how to ban people.

The lolicon debate I've seen a thousand times, and it never goes anywhere.
  • You can change. You can.
Does anything we do at IJBM go anywhere?

    /Bitter cynic.

    Only somewhat here
Then let's get back on one of the first two topics.

Well, I guess the closest thing to a getting-shit-off-your-chest board would be D&D, but I'm not entirely certain.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Edit: You know what, I really don't want to get into it.

    So...about banning Shlapintogan...:p
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

Well my name is vandro, I come from TvTropes, nice to meet you all,

The moderation debate we had earlier went somewhere, I think.  But this is one of those debates that are especially pointless.

    So...about banning Shlapintogan...:p
He is not one of us.

    Into the furnace with him.
  • You can change. You can.
I was joking. Anyway, I made a thread so you can debate the subject if you so desire to do so. If you don't, you can leave it to die.

@Shlapintogan: I was hoping Obligatory Toast would reply to my reply, since I was willing to keep up the debate. Though I agree with him that up until now, the mods have been pussies. But I think the new system might work, and Chagen will be the first person we begin with; once he's back, he's not allowed to make any threads, which should hopefully do a decent amount to cut down on drama.

Oh wait, here's another idea for probation: could we program something that allows a mod to cut off a user's access to certain threads? Like, if Chagen comes back and starts shitting up someone else's thread, remove him, and if he has to be removed from too many, permaban?

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^I think the only way to do that would be to make a category of threads people on probation couldn't view and move the threads to that category.

I don't think the quantity of threads should effect on the ban. Otherwise, I concur.
  • Why'd he get banned?
  • You can change. You can.
    Importing drama.
  • There was a "Stay polite" clause in the OP. Chagen did not stay polite.

I think that that's definitely a good idea, if it can be implemented.   I think it would result in less legitimate threads that get locked, too.  A lot of the time, locked threads seem like genuine discussions that get derailed by one angry poster.

"I don't think the quantity of threads should effect on the ban."

Why not? I figure, if they're removed from one thread and get the message, great. If, despite that rather blatant warning, they go into another thread and start flaming, and then another (hopefully not, but if), ban them.

^ Another thing I agree on.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Hi, Something Awful! I'm Malkavian! From what I've seen you don't seem to talk about me much. I'm going to suppose that no news is good news.

In any case, I actually agree with the anti-intellectualist bent TV Tropes has gotten. I can forgive stuff like the Michael Bay and Transformers pages having cheap shops at movie critics and anybody who might dare be interested in art, because, let's face it, those who can't stand Bay aren't going to be writing.

What more gets me is when I run into people who have called me an arrogant snob for listing Dracula and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as my favorite books. (Which is weird because I always figured nerds fucking loved Dracula and Sherlock Holmes) How people assure me that Shakespeare is objectively bad and clearly they have nothing to learn from one of the most influential writers in history. This idea that reading all of TV Tropes will give you the ability to write and not a bunch of events and archetypes that, when started, will limit and get in the way of story-telling.

Hell, this could be a completely different IJBM thread...

For what it's worth, Probations on SA are basically "You fucked up just bad enough to not merit a ban, but you can't post for x amount of time." There IS a probationary period that can last up to 100000 hours. If there were a way to put people on a permissions list above banned but below member (you could call it "Probation" or "Probated") that prevents them from posting or creating threads, that would be ideal.
  • You can change. You can.
I dunno. It just seemed a bit overreactionary, but that's just me. Fire away, if you feel like doing so.
  • Hey SA, you group are a bunch of really rad people!

    Hugs and kisses?

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^^That's already made. Can't create threads.

Our only way to stop posting is still tempbanning, though.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Well, if you can't hardcode it into the role, if a problem poster comes in to shit all over a legitimate thread and turns it into a dramafest, couldn't a mod say "Hey, stop posting in this thread or get banned?" Or will that seem too harsh?
  • edited 2011-08-01 16:51:28
    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, I think just saying "[poster], leave this thread. Now." would work.

    You can change. You can.
I think that such a thing should be done over PMs and then be made public in case the poster persists
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Er...well, yeah. PMing would be good.
  • Only somewhat here
The thing is, and this is my perception of it, telling them to just leave the thread or get banned isn't strong enough. It's to my understanding that this is, what, the third time you've banned Chagen? I think the moderation needs to quite a bit firmer, go over the rules and work them out so that you can get rid of the real problem posters without catching other people in the "well, if we ban this guy, we'll have to get all these others for the same rule" crossfire.

What I'm getting at is that maybe you guys should consider a large scale overhaul of the rules. Fine tune the ones that are a bit unclear (you might believe that the "Don't be a jerk" rule speaks for itself, but people like pushing those boundaries as much as they can) and crack down on rulebreakers hard.
