on that note, if I ever create a name faction, it would be called This Is Totally Stupid.
I am actually fine with taking a look at other tropes that were grandfathered in and actually have fairly opaque titles. However, I doubt that will really ever happen for certain names and the reasons given will most likely be that they are getting good use. Thus, I can see how some would see this process as being an instance of a Japanese-named trope being singled out.
Basically, I do not really see how nakama is really any less clear than something like "The McCoy" or "Xanatos Gambit" or such besides the fact that nakama is not in English.
As for the second argument about how nakama does not really mean friends like family in Japanese, I think there are actually plenty of other tropes where tropers added a meaning to words or a character's name that did not necessarily exist there beforehand or where tropers emphasized one part of a character's traits over others. "The Mario" and "The McCoy" come to mind from me.
Wait... It's getting renamed??!?!?
FUCK YAYUGH!
There really isn't a fuss on whether to rename or not (And the arguments
to keep it so far have been nothing but Grandfather clause and let's
keep obscure names on the up and up.)
I think you kind of pointed out why the discussion is a bit messed up. I mean, it is true that there are good reasons to rename nakama and I certainly would not miss it if it were renamed. However, from what I can tell, the Grandfather clause and good usage arguments are often used to take down rename suggestions for other tropes.
Basically, I am bit confused about how to weigh such arguments since I am not well-versed in TRS protocol. I agree about renaming The McCoy though. I think that The Kirk probably deserves a name change too, and I would guess The Spock would have to follow along with that as well even if I feel like that one is much more obvious to most people than the other two. Still, I could be wrong about that and from what I have seen, there is not support to rename any of those three tropes. In any event, since I do not have a strong opinion on this topic, I should probably stay out of it.
