  • There is love everywhere, I already know

For some reason I've never been really entertained by idols dancing.

    Blasphemy.

There is a reason idol choreography exists and it is to be awesome and synchronized and awesome.

    Admittedly I don't care for non-idol dancing.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Idols dancing is definitely better than non-idols dancing, mostly because they're very well choreographed and coordinated.

But it still kinda underwhelms me...

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

    Tangentially related.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

Oh Bleach, Division 0, seriously? Somebody should just up and fix Ichigo's Bankai already or give him his Newsuperpowerfulsoulreaperplusquincykai or whatever. We're past the point of me believing it's actually broken forever.

  • Ehm, wasn't the division 0 mentioned like 250 chapters ago?

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

They were mentioned, but only once, back in Chapter 223.

According to the Bleach Wiki, they were also mentioned in Chapter - 108, but when I check Chapter 108, I can't find the mention of it.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

I know they were previously mentioned, but again it's just been dropped into our laps that they're here now. I know we're supposed to be viewing that scene from Ichigo's eyes but it still feels kind of shoehorned in.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

Considering that they were already established, I'm actually impressed that Kubo only added five new characters.

  • ^^Well, Bach's plan was explicitly "get in, kill everyone you can, get out before squad 0 arrives". So, if anything, one should wonder what took them so long.

^ So was this before or after he married his second wife and fathered severalteen more children?

  • Kichigai birthday!!

Playing its OP in osu! has made me want to rewatch Paranoia Agent. Since I've already watched it in Japanese I was thinking about watchin the English or Spanish dub. I've heard the latter is actually pretty good, surprisingly

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    (A) Nanoha 2nd movie picture of Fate and Nanoha (nice picture) with Dog Days on the back
    (B) Vivio Takamachi (from Nanoha) with ef on the back
    (C) Sky Girls with some weird fanservice girl on the back
    (D) a Nanoha 2nd movie promotional booklet with lots of random shit inside (interviews, a comic strip, advertisements for merchandise), all in Japanese

    IJBM, which do?

Are there any Nanoha fans around here who actually would prefer to see a particular one of these get picked?

  • edited 2012-11-16 23:05:48

What are you even talking about?

Although obviously it has to be Nanoha and Fate.

Promotional booklet seems like it's actually worth looking at.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

It seems that Winter 2013 is either avoiding something big, going to be 2/3rds filler or will be the most gut-bustingly funny anime season we've had for a while. I'm sticking with Vividred, Chihaya and AKB0048 Next Stage.

And Precure, but that's a given for any winter season.

In other news, Funi doesn't seem to adjust their prices very well, so while I'll pay the original $70 for the 26 episode Birdy the Mighty Complete Collection, I'll pay 10 dollars less for the 51-episode Soul Eater Complete Collection :D

  • Well, we'll get more announcements when it gets closer to the start of the season, probably.  As for what's been announced...

I guess I'll watch Vividred Operation?  And Sasami-san because it's SHAFT?  And... that's it, I guess.  Well, it'll give me plenty of time to catch up on my backlog at least.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know
  • But you never had any to begin with.
  • JHMJHM
    Here, There, Everywhere

A lot of that looks... easy on the eyes but boring overall. Again, Chihayafuru sounds worthy, but I haven't even seen the first season; Sasami-san might be worth it because of, well, Shinbo; Saint Young Men could be pretty funny; and the next Berserk film should be decent, assuming they iron out the CG kinks. But all in all, that's terribly unimpressive.

    I'm just repeating myself now, aren't I?

I really want something weird... in a good way. Or at least something to stir the pot a little.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

^^Whatever happened to that Savanna Game show that appeared in earlier Winter 2013 lists?

EDIT: That's supposed to come out later this year, derp.

I have to agree with this. It's been too long since we've had a game changer like Ghost In The Shell.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

I'm good with what we currently get. In fact, I love what we currently get, the variety that can find something for almost everybody. I think it's different enough. This season alone we have Kamisama Kiss, Psycho-pass, Shin Sekai Yori, Muv Luv and Girls und Panzer.

My opinion may not matter since I've never seen even a second of Ghost in the Shell.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

Ghost in the Shell is another very good franchise that tends to get overhyped by its fanbase, which puts alot of people off of it.

I'd watch it on your own terms if you ever decide to.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I've only ever seen the first feature-length film in full, and haven't really bothered with the sequel(s?) or series. That's what I mean when I say Ghost In The Shell rather than any of its continuations or spinoffs, 'cause it's the one that was influential and really mattered.

    And it's really good, too.

But my point is that it's been a while since we've had a big release that was fresh, entertaining, was broadly applicable and had something to say beyond "fun things are fun". I'm using Ghost In The Shell as an example here because its an abstraction of real-world concerns that potentially affect us all, or will affect us all one day. Doesn't matter what your creed, colour, gender or opinion on cute girly Chinese cartoons is. Of course, it's cyberpunk, so that comes with the territory, but still.

Sci-fi in general is often very good at this, but generally in the sense of traditional sci-fi. Laser guns and robots aren't quite enough; the essence of science fiction is to comment and speculate on how technology might change our world and change us, and it therefore has a very universal kind of relevance as a genre. The film Equilibrium, for instance, is essentially the book 1984 plus Batman chopping up dudes with a katana. But still essentially 1984, albeit from an entirely different point of view.

This kind of broadly applicable media is important because it allows us to come together and discuss things that are universal concerns. If you want to channel Asimov, for instance, it could be questioning the point at which an artificial intelligence becomes truly sapient and deserving of being treated as a complete human being. Or, in video games, Deus Ex: Human Revolution presents the opposite scenario, and then crisscrosses into analysing the potential effects of cyborgs being considered not just transhuman, but posthuman, being afforded additional privileges and opportunities. Then you have the Metal Gear Solid series, which is based on the political ramifications of a nuclear-armed battle unit having the capacity to be deployed anywhere and to move freely over any kind of terrain. Plus the implementation of AI, nanomachines in the human body and more.

I'm not asking for more sci-fi anime, strictly speaking, but anime that follows the general pattern of bringing us together in observation or debate over matters that we all find relevant. And I'm just observing that it's been a while since there's really been something like that, since we're getting more and more of the cute-schoolgirls-doing-cute-things routine rather than a more broadly applicable set of releases. It might be true that there's something for everyone in the 2013 release schedule, but it doesn't look like there's something for everyone

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Doesn't Madoka count? It's been like, less than two years.

One foot in front of the other, every day.

Sort of. Madoka was really, really good and I'd recommend it to a lot of different people, but I think it was ultimately too abstract in expression to be a focal point of consideration. It certainly covers some very universal ground, especially during the first two arcs, but it kind of slips away during the final arc and becomes more and more abstract. There's a lot of emotional, id logic at work in that final act rather than any concerted effort of philosophy. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that; I thought Madoka was great. But it's not a stepping stone going forward, "merely" being an excellent example of the "now".

I'm not understanding the part where something for everybody equates to something that makes you think and has something to say...

I can give a few examples that have aired recently which both had something to say and gave lots of pauses for thought, but I don't think you can say everybody can watch them.

And I'm not sure what Madoka's message to the world is unless it's "Fight for what you want" or we get into metaphors...

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I think it has the potential to be both.

I'd rather it didn't, because I didn't like many aspects of the show, but there's a lot of things within it that could influence later shows.

The animation was fluid and great, for the most part, especially inside the Witch's fields, if you ignore all the QUALITY.

And... well, the abstraction in the later episodes actually worked well for the show, and again, could influence shows that later followed it.

I guess it's not really a game-changer though, just something that worked quite well for the show and could be adapted into later shows.

But I don't know, I couldn't get very far into GitS because it was too confusing for me and shows like Revolutionary Girl Utena and Serial Experiments Lain just confuse me and weird me out.

So I'm probably not at all qualified to comment on what shows matter, I guess.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

They don't equate. What I'm saying is that it's been a while since there's been an anime that has something to say to everybody. And if you look at the 2013 release list, you can see that each anime is targeting a niche, very much ensconced in its genre and in the audience of each genre.

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

What I'm saying is that it's been a while since there's been an anime that has something to say to everybody.

There has been a number of Anime like that lately, though Winter doesn't seem to be a source of that (Unless AKB0048 finally pays up on it's setting).

But using your arguement, GitS looks like it's ensconced in it's technophilic cyberpunk audience. I mean, of course everything looks a certain way, but there can always be surprises (Plus the list isn't complete yet anyway).
