The problem I have with your definition of "deep" is that it imposes a standard of quality on settings that don't really accommodate it. If a character is put across well, we're left with no reason to assume that they wouldn't be "deep," going by your standard, if placed in a more complex, or less "petty" situation, and so it seems pointless to decry them for not following what is ultimately an extraneous standard of quality.
tl;dr: I'd be lying if I said K-On!, as a whole, was complex, but its characters have their own sort of depth, and whether or not the show does what it intended is strictly a matter of opinion.
Not sure if I'm making sense. Am I making sense, Malk?
Moving too far in either spectrum inevitably limits the level of reactions and stimuli a character can have. In an overly saccharine one leads to an over-adundance of uguuing and power of friendship, while an overly dark one leads to gritty anger, sorrow, and too much hard-boiled stoicism.
Both can be entertaining but they both limit the level of depth a character can have and to say dark works have more potential for that ties into the immaturity of believing they have more to say about the human condition.
^You're making perfect sense. Indeed, this definition of 'deep' (a nebulous term in the first place) is pretty pick-and-choose. Hamlet's motivations aren't particularly complex (Dude killed my dad, I wanna kill him) but what is done with the character leads to deep one.
^ That, too. Moving too far towards darkness removes any realistic possibility of happiness.
Also, let's keep in mind K-On is a comedy. Groucho Marx isn't particularly deep, but Duck Soup is still one of the best comedies ever.
Which isn't to say K-On also is, but just that it's immensely enjoyable.
Depth in a character is not intrinsically related to the setting or the tone of a work. A character in an idyllic, rose-coloured world can be every bit as deep as a character in a terrible, jade-coloured world.
Many authors utilize suffering to try and make characters deep, but characters don't need suffering to be deep. A nurse who struggles to balance obligations (successfully) in an attempt to meet her parent's expectations can be every bit as deep as the ~tortured swordsman~ travelling across the land to right his wrongs.
Depth does imply that quality, though. At least, for characters. It's a nebulous term, but it doesn't change from setting to setting either.
A character may have been deep in another setting, but the characters aren't in that setting.
> Jane Austen isn't that good anyway
She wrote one of the only two love stories I've actually enjoyed, hers being Pride and Prejudice.
I disagree somewhat with your statement.
> Nagi no Asukara trailer(?)
> Duck Soup
That's irrelephant.
^^ Wait, I don't know how anything I said is inconsistent with what you're saying.
That's because I didn't say anything about what deep is. I just noted that deep characters can exist in idyllic worlds, and that deep does imply a standard of quality.
What standard of quaility? Sorry, I don't see how I implied deep=quality there.
Blast of Tempest 4: (Spoilers, I think)What, no Fraulein this week either? Right after I realized it was Nana Mizuki too?
Surprise surprise, the show has gained another beautiful soundtrack piece. Looks like I spoke too soon (Though there are only 2 out of I don't know memorable tracks so far, so maybe I'm prejudging the situation)
The personal drama in this episode comes mostly from the main pair, brought on by further interaction with Hakaze and by the suffering of others. Hakaze is either a genuinely good person or is manipulating them. Can't put either interpretation down yet.
Yoshino has truly realized the suffering he survived through that many others haven't. While Mahiro acts as if this is normal, it's nice to see him still show his caring side (Or is that devotion to Yoshino).
I like how Hakaze learns how manipulative Yoshino is. Yoshino tells the entire story as if he never liked Mahiro at all, but when Mahiro relays what little he remembers, she realizes there's a lot of caring moments he left out.
Not much Aika this week either. Not that I mind, just got used to seeing her around.
Next episode seems to feature the blond girl from the OP, seems promising.
Best part of the episode? Mahiro spends half of it naked (in a bathtub, though it's drawn attention to), Hakaze talks a lot about Yoshino and Mahiro's relationship, Yoshino tries to confess about dating his sister and suddenly Aika's vision comes to him full force and he silently declares his love for her in a show of THEY'RE NOT GAY .
On the other side of the quality coin we have Sword Art Online 17, which takes all the promise 16 built on with Alfheim and ruins it for everybody.
The villain created a gateway and used it to trap 300 of the SAO survivors in ALO, he also just happens to be a computer engineer at Asuna's fathers' company who wants to marry Asuna. He's trying to create tech that can brainwash and implant memories and feelings using the Virtual World Helmets (Seriously, why are these things still legal mass-market wise if they're so infinitely crackable?).
Kirito himself becomes the most perfect fighter ever. Apparently all his SAO skill has transferred over, that makes sense, but it doesn't explain his ability to fly as well as a veteran after two minutes of training.
The entire "If different races worked together to do this they could win, so of course nobody thought of that because online races actually matter to people who want to win." thing is such an obvious plot that they might as well have given us the cliff notes on how Kirito's multi race party will be built. Also, if they'd brought up the obvious racism, that would have been interesting, but of course not.
So Kirito's sister is the blonde girl helping him out, hope they don't try to drag out the confession about this over more than 3 more episodes.
On the bright side, Luna Haruna and Aoi Eir continue to be awesome.
so I'm watching Ghost Hound and uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.
I've only seen the first episode of Ghost Hound, and despite liking it... I can entirely sympathise with that reaction.
This weeks list of BD sales.
Eureka Seven AO 5 claims #1 (May have to do with the cover featuring Eureka herself and the Noah plushie) and Natsuiro manages to chart, hopefully some drunk executive will think it's a good idea to give it a sequel!
Darn, Smile's BD Boxes are coming out too soon, seems like they're trying to clear out for Sailor Moon... But it's nice that it caused the sales to spike as it's still running. Go otaku go!
The first volume sold less than 5,000 copies. So... I doubt it. Too bad, since I kind of miss it.
In other news, the main character of Psycho-Pass is totally moe and everyone else is a bishounen with a mysterious dark past. This should surprise absolutely nobody.
Also, BDs for the Strike Witches movie have been out for an entire week, 10 different RAWs have been released, and yet it's still not subbed.
Nice to see he's sticking to his trademark of total lies for the first couple of episodes and then turning the show into something else.
That is a thing! I've been seeing it around over and over but it never sticks in my mind... They'll probably be out soon. It is surprising, since the last Pretty Cure All Stars movie was subbed like, seconds after BD release.
Can we consider music sales for Natsuiro Kiseki? Or would that just have a "Well, it did it's job, Sphere's moving CDs now, never again."
But there's already plenty of suffering and DARKNESS.
Although there's also "I thought that I could find something only I could do" and "I wanted to find the reason I was born" so who knows?
Yeah, probably. If they just made the anime to sell CDs (which they did), there's no point in making more once it's already succeeded at that.
> Strike Witches movie
> more Strike Witches
tellmewheredidwegosowrong.avi
But Strike Witches is actually really good.
Well, the second season kind of feels like a rehash of the first season in a lot of ways (some of them deliberate, even) but it's still entertaining all around.
And anyway there's going to be a third season next year or so, so... deal with it.
don't you like strike witches, glenn
like, a lot
^ Let me put it this way. I haven't seen enough of it to say whether the story, the setting, the soundtrack, the characters, or the art are any good.
But the way the camera feels a need to CONSTANTLY FOCUS ON GIRLS' CROTCHES is EXTREMELY ANNOYING.
Yay! Now it should turn into Girls und Panzer and get rid of all the fanservice and that would be perfect.
So I started watching Cowboy Bebop.
Wow, the English dubbing is the best I've seen in a while.
I was talking to someone yesterday how Girls und Panzer was about the dumbest show title I've seen in quite awhile.
Why?
@Eelektross: There's a reason that Japanese fans prefer the English dub on that show.
We all know that Naruto is the best manga of all time, right, guys? : D
It's actually One Piece, sorry. : |
best mango is twin peaks we've been over this i'm sure
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OfYYlOGGnDk/SznyVtcuaKI/AAAAAAAAA1c/O7mJj_uWgTE/s400/IMG_0786web.jpg
It can't beat that though.
@All Nines You're hilarious.
(One Piece actually is my favorite manga, though I don't know if it would qualify as the best, objectively. Despite all the shitty reasons out there for calling it bad, there are a few actual flaws that niggle at even some of the most hardcore fans)
I'm assuming you weren't being serious about Naruto, though?
