Chris Brown is also a One Piece fan.
"Well, it makes sense that he would relate to a protagonist who doesn't shy away from [hitting girls]."
A surprising amount of rappers are into anime.
Kanye West got into an argument on...twitter, was it? A few months ago when he disagreed with some article of "Best Anime" saying Spirited Away was better than AKIRA (which is apparently his favorite or something).
Lupe Fiasco has a punk band called Japanese Cartoon, so I don't even need to go into detail there. Pharell I think likes anime too, but I'd need to check that.
This is without diverting from the mainstream at all, mind. Way more underground rappers are into anime.
edited because I'm a dope.
It's not that surprising if you take into account that quite a few creative people were, at some point in their lives, kind of nerdy. It comes with the territory; rappers are no exception. Of course, the culture clash element is a bit curious, but rap's a pretty big underground(ish) thing in eastern Asia, so it goes both ways...
"Yes yes, uh, guess who's on third?//Lupe steal like Lupin III" is still one of my favorite simpler rap couplets.
^^ True. It's just nice seeing this sort of convergence--seeing a popular figure with a certain appearance being into the same shit I am, whether I even like who they are (Chris Brown) or what they do (Avril Lavigne).
It really is. To cite a personal example, learning of Andrew W.K.'s double life as a horror enthusiast and noise musician really upped my respect for the guy (although I liked him already), and Robin Williams' love of Neon Genesis Evangelion still tickles me.
On a semirelevant note, this song is apparently about AKIRA, but I've never seen AKIRA, so I couldn't tell you how about AKIRA it is.
Fun fact, no one can seem to agree on this song's title (it's either "Guns" or "Closer to the City")
Then that's an issue that should be corrected immediately.
^^ The lyrics seem to be referencing the state of Neo-Tokyo in the manga/film, and they flat-out reference Kaneda at one point. Plus, the feel of the track is definitely one of aggressive swagger...
Yeah, it's about AKIRA.
EDIT: Oh, it's definitely about AKIRA. This thing is loaded with references.
Been meaning to see it for years, never got around to it.
It's not even a matter of finding it. There's a copy at the library (literally the only piece of anime there). So I could just rent it.
I am just very lazy about watching new (to me) things.
Not really surprising. El-P is big on sci-fi.
I'm still pretty sure a line in "Delorean" is a Serial Experiments Lain reference.
unsurprised given Kanye West's Stronger's video is a blatant Akira reference one after the other.
The video to "Stronger" was....interesting to say the least.
Stronger is actually probably my least favorite Kanye single, and that's counting "Heartless".
I now have an avatar taken from one of Yoshitoshi ABe's design sketches for serial experiments: lain. I feel so happy.
I actually love stronger, mostly because I loved the video.
Its worthwhile to try to pick up the manga if you have the time/money (things huge and seven volumes with something like 200 pages per book), because it has little to do with the movie since it converges big time halfway through.
Dancing theme covers: Proving that the Japanese can take weird rainbow magical girl things and make them 70% weirder.
Doublepost cause Vividred PV:
Magical Girls? Magical Girls! Magical girls with a sentai color scheme, even!
And yes, judging from the creepy fanservice, it's totally Strike Witches' little sister.
1. Nice music!
2. Blatant fanservice shots = DO NOT WANT
3. They named the blue character Aoi. Heh.
4. Is anyone else tired of seeing schoolgirl outfits everywhere?
5. Does anyone else rather female anime characters wear pants (like, say, real-life girls and women)?
I dunno, I know plenty of girls who wear skirts.
Plenty of girls though, who would also not touch skirts with a ten foot pole.
Some diversity would be nice.
It's not just her. Everyone has color names (well, some of them are just named after things that are a particular color, but same idea). Although their colors don't seem to correspond with any part of their character design so it's kind of a waste.
Anime isn't real life.
Anyway, the PV makes it look like it won't be as fun as Strike Witches, but PV's never really say much about a show, so I'll still wait until I can actually watch it before I make any judgments.
What I can say though is that the character designs look very much like every other A-1 Pictures character designs, and that is kind of boring.
Sort of. I like it when they actually design a costume if they're meant to be a special ops team and not just "Schoolgirl!"
Oh god, this is the best thing
It was perfect at the end of the second episode.
But I think the OP is better overall, mostly because the animation that goes along with the ED is pretty unremarkable, whereas the OP is really cool except for the fact that it's all CG. Also "JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOJO!"
It's pretty cool that they have a Yes song as the ED though.
So, I just finished Paranoia Agent last night.
I need a new obsession to keep myself from disappointment.
Have you heard of Last Exile?
It's a fantastic steam punk anime with character design by Range Murata and concludes after 2 seasons so its a decent length.
Otherwise for manga, anything by Tsutomu Nihei is awesome.
Do you mean 2 cours or are you including Fam? (Which was... not as good as the original, but decent).
I liked the first season, but it's one of those marathon shows, I can assume the reason it only sold decently (in both Japan and everywhere else) is that it was confusing enough to warrant like, a five minute preview before every weekly episode but not enough to use it as a selling point ala Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere.
^^^
watch PrecureTry Princess Tutu or RahXephon or Haibane Renmei as a pick up after Paranoia Agent shoving the ugly side of humanity at you for a season.
I assumed obsession implied a marathon mentality ergo my recommendation.
And since it runs for 26 episodes I figured it would be alright to describe it as 2 seasons.
Another interesting sci-fi I'd recommend is Technolyze, however be warned it is gory and does focus on humanity's shortcomings but also rather awesome.
But if you're looking for something purely comical there is always excel saga.
Well, I found an interesting thread on TVT.

I swear, I wasn't browsing; I was searching for the thread on anime conventions but searched "cons" and got this instead!
