That's probably mostly because most people who wouldn't like it don't bother watching it in the first place, because length and because old.
True point. But that being said, one would at least expect some people to be horribly disappointed, or at least bored. But apparently not, which is impressive.
LotGH has a weird place in my heart, I found it good in an artistic sense but I didn't find it very engaging at all. It's not even that I didn't like it, it's just that I wasn't really entertained by it.

Try out Steins; Gate. It's a really fine sci-fi anime, and while I wouldn't call it hard sci-fi. It's nice to see sci-fi that actually explores the concept rather than just using it as an excuse for action scenes.
Also Mirai Nikki, but I recommend that because lol me.
I'd recommend Mirai Nikki, at least at first I loved it, then the ending was the worst shit I've ever seen.
