^^ I don't.
So I'm having a hard time seeing why people got so into Prototype. I mean it's not bad and it has some of the makings of a great Spider-man game but nothing about it is really striking. The combat, aesthetics, and freeform travel are generic, the story is bland, and Mercer's powers basically boil down to 'like everyone else's powers combined' which I guess makes a sort of sense in a video game setting but it's hard to feel not on the military's side when I literally cannot keep myself from killing hundreds of people in the game.
Until you realize that Blackwatch is basically the bioweapons research version of the KKK.
I guess Prototype is like a superhero clusterfuck story without any actual superhero. All you have is Mercer, who is a force of nature, and the military.
INUH - Blackwatch was pretty terrible, but there were plenty or regular marines and army personel who were just sent in to deal with the monster outbreak.
Overall, I thought Prototype was pretty solid, but nothing hugely special. Worth the $20 I spent on it, but I had all the fun with it that I was going to, so I didn't get the sequel.
So, the Steam Summer Sale starts in less than 24 hours.
Should I make a separate topic on it or not?
Go ahead.
I should go and see what's in store for this sale.
Make the thread and I'll throw the believed-to-be-leaked daily indie bundles list (courtesy of joystiq) in it.
Played the Spec Ops: The Line demo...this game looks pretty damn good.
It... is a Gears of War clone. With pretty environments. It's amusing that the pistol is perfectly accurate at any range and a one-hit kill. That was my impression of the demo.
What's the name of that anime mech FPS game?
I was mostly talking about the story >.>
I mean, a game can have gameplay as good as it wants, and if it doesn't make me give a shit, I won't give a shit. See: the difference between Modern Warfare and the Modern Warfare sequels.
On the other hand, a game with a good story is good as long as the gameplay isn't actively getting in the way.
A game having good gameplay should be enough to make you care about it. I don't think I've ever wanted to play a game just because it had a good story.
But see, I can get good gameplay from a lot of games. I can only get a good narrative experience from a few.
And now I've just realized where INUH and I have different tastes and expectations in games.
And I'm glad that we have different tastes.
Like, Space Marine hasn't really done anything to make me care about the story, but the gameplay is just so much pure fun that I keep playing.
And the first Mass Effect game really sucked me in with it's characters and setting and story, but the gameplay is kind of clunky and not all that fun.
^^Wait, I thought you liked Final Fantasy.
^Well, I suppose there are games I play just for the gameplay, but they have to have really good and/or unique gameplay.
Bleh, I'm tired and have a bit of a stomach ache, I can't think straight or type out my thoughts properly.
I don't mind narrative, it's just not my top priority most of the time.
Well, it's just...Final Fantasy is the quintessential example of a series where narrative is the only thing it has going for it.
Well, it's like... If a game isn't fun to play, then I'm not going to care about how good the narrative is. On the other hand, I'm likely to be very absorbed by any kind of narrative if I can actually have fun playing the game. The classic Megaman games have an awful story (at least, when considered on its own. It's good enough for what it's meant to do), but I care more about it than pretty much any story-focused game I've played just because the games themselves are so fun.
Though that doesn't really apply for games with extremely minimal gameplay, like visual novels and a lot of art games. Usually they just have gameplay that serves a particular narrative purpose and that works well enough.
I still really, really don't see how they get lumped in with games. They don't have any gameplay. There are things that are both VNs and games, like the Ace Attorney series, but they're still two different media.
Well, I suppose that counts towards my "Narrative matters more here" games. I do like the music from the games too.
Gah, I am not good at critically describing some of my favorite stuff.
Mmm, I wanna play me some classic Mega Man now. >>
I'd have to disagree there, but muh.
^^^ They're marketed as games, called games by their fans, and often include all sorts of gameplay elements (most commonly sim or RPG elements, but fighting games and strategy games and shooters are common too).
