There's probably an essay of things to say about "unusual" magical girl shows. Especially considering that having fight scenes with any regularity used to be unusual, but the style that used to be "normal" is kind of dead nowadays.

And Saber is totally a great character just for getting to so many alternate versions despite all starting from the same basis. (This isn't counting the look-alikes who share no basis beyond character design)

Figure 17 had them in every episode, but Uta~Kata had zero. I wish there was some of that style left over, but that requires a much lighter touch or you end up with dumb magical hijinks like Ultra Maniac.

I think even before her anime I like Mordred Saber the best.

[01:46:56] also come to notice it it's probably generic anime protagonist symptom but kira yamato from gundam appears similar to yuuya bridges from muv luv
[01:47:12] also muv luv is like the worst name ever to convince anyone that that series isn't about porn

[01:51:06] oh damnit i wanted to ask him why he thought i was listening to a lot of "nakajima" whoever that is

wait never mind it's probably megumi nakajima and i think i only know her from her work on Lagrange
  • There is love everywhere, I already know
Yes I did mean her and I thought you were way more into her music, huh.

Anyways Aikatsu Stars! is on the cusp of the second season transition, despite the fact that the plot (and characters) are cribbed off from the original Aikatsu!'s second season, I'm going to remain hopeful about it not being the worst (even though I just realized half the best characters are leaving and of their group the only one that's staying is the one I like the least).

Also, I'm really loving ACCA this season, it's great.

Veddy Guud, I like ze overall bloody tone, spares no expense.

However, the writing was very bad, especially the romance and atoning arc. As I grew up I couldn't endure it.

i find it ironic that two of those involve dead people

    LOL

edit: oh hey quote nesting formatting is broken so i have to fix it manually
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I recently wrote this on a MAL forum thread:

I recently watched three school battle harem shows with ecchi elements.

I don't even much like fanservice, though I watched these mainly because
I liked the character designs of the first two, and the third one I
randomly picked up and stuck with it because the music was convincing.

    * The Asterisk War: it's okay. I wish Julis didn't blush embarrassingly
as much and actually was portrayed as cooler. Battle tactics are fun.
Gratuitous fanservice sucks. Only seen the first season though.

    * Hundred: Character art is the best of these three shows, but I didn't
like the OP/EDs and the story turned out to be kinda forgettable. Best
thing is Emile, strangely. Gratuitous fanservice still sucks.

    * Absolute Duo: Turned out to be possibly the best of these three.
Great OP and EDs. Hesitant on the character designs, but that's okay
given that I actually enjoyed the story. I watched it dubbed, and I
usually like dubs, so maybe that influenced my opinion -- especially
considering that Lilith, who would otherwise be an obnoxious character,
was actually given some rather witty lines that were delivered rather
memorably. Also succeeded in making me tear up a bit (the other two
shows didn't). Gratuitous fanservice and obnoxiously large breast sizes
still suck, but at least the characters came to life and the story was
pretty convincing, even as it left some plot threads hanging (though you
can't do everything in one cour).
  • I finished Izetta and like:

    weg

Is that Yuuna's face photoshopped onto Fine's body?
  • Well, I used GIMP instead but basically, yeah.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
So I'm listening to Absolute Duo's soundtrack by itself now and I'm definitely liking it.  In retrospect, this was probably a significant reason I enjoyed this show more than its comparables Hundred or Asterisk War.

^^ There's that one bit where he's got his hair down and his eyes are closed but I can't remember if the anime did that and I didn't want to check episodes from the second half yet.

Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?.
  • There is love everywhere, I already know
Watched Arpeggio -Ars Nova- Cadenza, it's really rare for a sequel (especially one in the form of a movie) to improve on the original series and introduce new backstories that don't clash with it, but it really did well.

Also I would have been so mad if I didn't get Wedding Dress Iona, because lately some of my favorite outfits have basically been takes on that particular garment.

Well after Shinsekai yori lessons that aren't worse than "We murder our own children because there's a .5% chance of them turning evil but that's okay since the humans we turned into rats hate us and want to kill us and they're much worse because they're ugly right?"
    I can give a pass

    Reposted/Edited from IRC

    Sca-red Rider XechS
was a really good sci-fi anime. It chose it's battles with the harem well, which probably disappointed people if they wanted to see x guy featured since it refused to go the standard "every guy gets an episode" route. The original plot was pretty good, and they adapted it well, the pacing and dramatic emphasis was spot-on. There was a lot towards the end that wasn't explained, but is explained in the source material.

Either way, it still made for a good monster-fighting finale right up until the last episode, which had a great number of issues because it refused to lay down into explanations, focusing more on the character's own POVs, which, you guessed it, we couldn't identify with because nobody explained anything.

The epilogue was well-done, and I liked that the story ended with the good ending from the games instead of the perfect one where MC is alive (because that meant she needed to pick one of the guys and that would have been a mess). They tease at her being alive in the end, but that was okay I think. The cast that was picked to be the main characters (that is, MC, Hako, Takt, Yosuke, Hijiri) was solid, and all three of the guys plots were done to a T (aside from not explaining how Takt survived later on, but there is an explanation for that elsewhere).

It was in no way perfect, but it was legitimately enjoyable, it treated it's characters well and let them really develop, the world was nicely built and it was really pretty. The ED was also one of my favorite character single type releases of the year.

And fairly, it was better than a lot of sci-fi anime and could be taken seriously which in itself is a real achievement for a reverse harem.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Honestly with harem (a term which I use to include the so-called "reverse harem" as well) series, I usually just prefer that the center character just pick one partner and run with 'em and then we can get on with the plot.  lol

There is love everywhere, I already know
A harem video game adaptation is a lot more difficult to pull off whilst including all of the plot, because usually multiple playthroughs (six, in this case) reveal various details that make up the full plot.

I'm looking forward to Re:CREATORS next cour, because it will either be a well-done sci-fi story or a hilarious mess. [nzk] will be on music and the OP, and Ayano Mashiro (who did the Gunslinger Stratos OP /crosses fingers) is on the ED. Sadly the name of the song ("NEWLOOK") makes no reference to her Racist Takeover Of Anison* (though that's much less funny now with the American president being who he is).

EDIT: After watching the PV; aside from it's striking similarities to Fate/stay night and it's basic "everything and the kitchen sink" premise, I'm not too excited anymore.

*her previous singles include ideal white and vanilla sky, and then there was her album WHITE PLACE.

Just finished Shuumatsu no Izetta, I'm surprised at how much I loved it and how good it was, I'll do a full write-up some other time.

More importantly GMH they're making an anime about you. It's even your favorite genre.
  • Tohru proves why dragongirls make the best maids.

Also she keeps cooking her own tail to try to get Kobayashi-san to literally eat a part of her, which is hilarious on a number of levels.

I added Izetta to my to-watch list upon this rec, IIRC.

And where's that other series that stars someone named Glenn (specifically Glenn Radars) when I need it to reply to a joke?
