IJBM Anime Club: Gunbuster (Not actually watching Gunbuster anymore)
Comments
Doesn't help that I'm very much not an eighties person, I think. The opening and ending don't really do anything for me. Hell, I'm this weird, sorry excuse for a metalhead who doesn't even like Iron Maiden.
the thing to remember about Gunbuster is that it was initially planned and storyboarded as a 26 episode TV series and downsized to an OVA just before they started animating, so they ended up having to cram a shitload of plot into very little time. With that in mind, they did a pretty good job.
@Everest: Don't'chu be talkin' shit about my grorious 80's mechanical detailing. FLCL may have been a great series, but Canti was easily the worst thing to ever happen to the mecha genre aesthetics'wise.
I dunno, I couldn't make it past the first episode of that, either. Then again, I didn't try too hard.
@stef:
Is that actually true? I'm willing to believe it, given the slightly awkward pacing of the series, but Wikipedia says nothing about it.@Everest: FLCL was decent, but it is by far and away the most overrated thing I have ever watched.
^^Same. It just...didn't look especially good from the first episode.
So I'm guessing you guys aren't going to want to watch FLCL next for anime club.
I sure as hell am.
^^Well, I have all of the episodes. :P
Truth be told, while I'd take the excuse to see it again, I'd prefer something I haven't seen for the next one. I have a couple ideas, but this does seem a bit early to be thinking about that.
Eh, it might just take the reliance on others for me to get over the first hill. I might enjoy it after that, for all I know. But my first vote would probably go to something else.
Oh fuck, I totally screwed my posting here up. I made a second post in a row asking if people were find with me removing the parenthetical part of the thread title, then decided to go post that in the main IJBM Anime Club thread and delete it here...except my browser history only stores the old version of the thread (without my new post) in cache, and then I went too fast and deleted my first post instead.
Anyway, here's what I had posted before...something like this:
I was expecting the story to be rushed anyway because it's just 6 episodes to tell a story--that's less than three hours, and even a three-hour movie feels a bit rushed for an epic story.
And yes, I did feel the compression, with things like how fast that other student's rivalry came and went, and generally how fast events happened and people's impressions of each other changed.
Overall, not quite impressed with this episode. Looking forward to later episodes to see if my opinion will change.
Are we supposed to watch episode 2 yet?
It's past 1600 UTC (12 noon EDT) Monday, so yes.
This is pretty much how I feel about FLCL, too. Although that's based on FLCL being one of the first anime I watched. If I watched it now, I feel like I'd like it even less.
And... I'll watch episode 2 later tonight, when I'm out of school.
Seems like the people in this thread so far are: me, nyktos, dyre, stef, schitzo, inuh, evrest, mrw
The current time period for watching episode 2 ends at noon EDT (1600 GMT) tomorrow. If fewer than six of these eight people have watched it by then, this time period will be extended by one day.
hrm. I'll be backed up as hell thanks to my stupid cartooning packet.
EPISODE 2 DISCUSSION
Well, watched episode 2.
Lol, Jung Freud.
I really can't tell if she's, like... actually distinguishable from any other non-Noriko girl in this show, except by her appearance. It kind of seems like everyone except Noriko can mostly be summed up as "a bitch." Fortunately, Noriko is the main character, so...
Suddenly, aliens! Not much of a surprise, since I kind of just assumed there were aliens from the beginning because sci-fi, I guess.
GAN-BASUTAA~! I will never get tired of the voice for the eyecatch scene.
Also suddenly the show remembers that it's also an ecchi anime.
And then... stuff happens.
Overall, I liked this episode more than the last one, since it seemed like the tone was more consistent. Also, the scene at the start and the scene at the end were kind of sad. :c
Next episode promises to have an actual fight, which is nice. It also promises to have a white-haired guy, which is... an anime thing, for sure.
It's "old animation," but it's not like it's bad animation. It's certainly not worse than most modern anime. I think it's more that you don't like non-digital coloring and older art styles.
EDIT: And I guess we're extending the deadline for episode 2 by 24 hours, since only two people have watched it so far.
God I love this show. I couldn't tell you why exactly, but I do.
Like the first one, this is my third time seeing this, so I don't have a lot to say about it. "Buster Machine March" appears in this episode for the first time, though its use in the next one is far more epic, but that song makes anything awesome,
Let's get the thead title updated to the current episode.
Watching ep 2 now.
Whoa. That was an emotional intro. I'm guessing the guy he saved is the coach dude.
The opening theme is starting to grow on me. And I just now noticed that that blond-haired friend of Noriko might become a major character too, based on the last scene shown in the OP.
Maybe she's the "girl genius" mentioned in the title? We know very little about her but she does wear glasses, which is often symbolic of book-smarts.
The Excelion looks much more detailed and less cool than I expected.
Is what Coach said about distorted perceptions of distance and size true? Seems likely, since space doesn't have guide-posts that allow us to compare the size of an unknown object to the size of a known object.
And was this show made back when the Soviet Union still existed?
Blue-haired girl (a.k.a. "onee-sama") doesn't seem to like newly-introduced red-haired girl.
LOL "Jung Freud". Who would name their kid that.
That's the first time in a serious drama show that I've seen a "can you hear me in the back" antic.
Orbitting the moon? That's a pretty drastic step up from just basic motion controls.
What. Another pointless rivalry battle?
I'm surprised she's going after the experienced one rather than the noob. Well, at least she has class.
How can you even control those machines with just two sticks? And what happened to their assignment?
Oh, this is the "girl genius".
Oh well well well, look at what we have here. The Parasite Queen from Metroid Prime.
Yeah, the drama scenes are really happening too fast for them to sink in.
Security system alerted!
Self-destruct sequence activated! Time left 0:59 ESCAPE IMMEDIATELYWell, someone's in trouble now. Three people are, rather....and I'd rather the mid-episode eyecatch not say out loud the name of the show. Just display it, like Noir does.
Hey, where did third girl go and why isn't she being punished?
Well, I wasn't expecting that. The show actually does nudity. Oh well, not like I really care.
Well, rival girl is behaving surprisingly not-mean. Maybe she really got a stern talking-to. And this really does feel like a very weirdly fast change of personality.
Weird. Rival girl has the same birthday as main character girl. Does this follow law of conservation of detail.
Now that's something I don't see often these days. Rival girl's eye shape actually changed significantly, from mean look to cute look.
Is that a generic alarm sound? I'm damn sure I've heard it while playing the flash game Collapse.
I wonder how realistic the technobabble about the Doppler-Lorenz shift is.
So GunBuster is indeed the name of the main giant robot.
Time dilation jokes. Heh. I wonder how people in this setting have learned to deal with that in terms of birthdays and age and stuff.
Holy crap, there's music now.
Oh holy shit. It's the Luxion.
...why is there still air in it? And you can just bash through the hull into the ship like that even at 99.8%c? And why the heck are its rockets still going?
Curious. Time dilation WILL be a plot feature. I look forward to seeing how this is handled.
...ehh, the upbeat ED wasn't really fitting.
Is the series actually called "Aim for the Top"?
The early episodes (or, as it turned out, episode 1) were intended as a parody of Aim for the Ace, a 70's manga about Tennis. It's called Aim for the Top because the first arc of the intended anime was, basically, "Aim for the Ace WITH GIANT ROBOTS."
The Aim-For-The-Ace parody elements don't last much longer after this episode, if you were wondering.
The 80s style of parody is a bit confusing to me--especially when I'm lacking the inspiration source.
It happens a lot in K-ON!. Also probably other things, but I can't remember specific examples off the top of my head.
So far, stef, dyre, everest, nyktos, and myself have seen ep 2. MrW? INUH? Schitzo? Juan? Should I declare episode 3 this afternoon?
I won't be able to watch this week thanks to homework. Go ahead.
I'll watch it today, but go ahead.
Okay, episode 3 time starts now! Watch it by Saturday!
