IJBM Anime Club: Gunbuster (Not actually watching Gunbuster anymore)
Comments
I haven't seen Durarara!! either. I don't particularly want to, but I don't have any objections if that's what we end up deciding on (of course, that goes for anything. I'll watch whatever is agreed on, of course).
As for something I would suggest (since it seems that right now we're just suggesting stuff)... I'd want to watch Alien Nine, but I can't really imagine anyone else would, so... Gunslinger Girl, since it's vaguely along the same lines but it's much more likely that people who aren't me will actually like it. And I haven't watched this yet so I don't know if it's any good, but Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu seems interesting-ish (though really I think I just mean it seems depressing) and it's only 6 episodes.
Macross Plus, definitely.
> We should do Sky Girls.
I've seen it.
Takes a while, though.
I've seen it too. Also it's boring. The Vic Viper (or rather, multiple Vic Vipers) being in it is amusing though.
Time of Eve? It's quite short, and very good.
^ I like that suggestion.
@DYRE: Sky Girls should have been advertised as a cute and adorable slice-of-life show rather than an action show, basically.
But as a slice-of-life show it's almost even worse.
Oh well, Strike Witches came out a year later and had pretty much all the good things about Sky Girls but it was actually fun to watch. Not that Strike Witches doesn't have a few problems of its own (and of course it has far more ecchi content than Sky Girls, which may be a problem depending on your preferences).
^^ That sounds acceptable.
The fact that Sky Girls is not skecchi makes it better.
Also, did Mitsumune Shinkichi write the soundtrack for Strike Witches?
I don't nominate Strike Witches, for obvious reasons.
How about FLCL? It's as silly as it gets, but the dub is great fun, the animation is superb, and the music is good too. And I also have the complete series off of iTunes, so that's another reason.
I watched most of the first episode of FLCL and it seemed pretty bad to me.
I'd be okay with FLCL, though I've seen it before.
I'd watch Alien Nine only because I've seen one ep and it'd be nice to finish it up.
How long is Macross Plus?
What about Time of Eve?
Time of Eve sounds good.
I wasn't seriously suggesting it... (or suggesting it at all for that matter)
I don't really want to watch FLCL. Once was far more than enough.
Eve no Jikan or Macross Plus sound fine though.
Four episodes, 40 minutes each. lrn2google
But I'm definitely not interested in Macross Plus on account of my bias against mecha anime played straight, and Strike Witches for an already stated reason.
I guess Time of My Former Namesake would be good, too, though I have no idea what it's about.
Are we only going for super-short anime or something? I mean, yeah, our fumbling through Gunbuster kind of didn't demonstrate good ability to watch anime as a collective, but I think that would be more than a little restrictive.
If I may alter my previous suggestion (since no one is interested in NHK, still), I guess I'd like an excuse to try Gankutsuou again. I think it's 26 episodes long.
It's what Isaac Asimov would have come up with if you'd ask him to make an anime.
I'm fine with NHK, btw.
Currently I'd say Time of Eve would be my preference out of what's been suggested, though.
I'd be okay with NHK too.
Ah. Haven't read any of his stuff, but I'm pretty sure that such a description can only speak highly of it.
"I'm fine with NHK, btw.

Fair enough. Maybe for the next one?
Asimov= robots robots robots.
I like Isaac Asimov...sometimes.
I'm talking less about writing style and more in terms of being about robots that follow his laws.
Macross Plus is pretty great. I recommend the film over the OVAs. Also, it skips all the mecha world building porn in favor of probably one of the best love triangle plots I've ever seen in an anime.
Also, FLCLFLCLFLCLFLCLFLCLFLCL
...World building is bad now?
I've read like, one story by Asimov.
> FLCL
Why do I read this as "fuckin' LCL"?
Also, sounds like Time of Eve would be a nice choice.
Also, we should be using the main IJBM Anime Club thread, but no one else cares so whatever.
Its not bad, but All Nine's post gave an air of "I hate all mecha anime. ALL OF THEM", so I eased his fears about it. Tried to.
It's not so much that I hate mecha as much as I'm mostly uninterested in it. Hell, I don't even know if I'm going to finish NGE. It simply wouldn't be my first choice, considering that non-mecha has already been suggested.
And I didn't want to detail this yesterday, but could we establish a sort of order for viewing things in a turn-based fashion? Like, I think we watched Gunbuster on Nyktos's recommendation, and it seems that we'll be watching Time of Everest next, which was from Clockwork. So after that, keep going through with a recommendation from each person who hasn't had their suggestions accepted yet based on general interest, until things go back to Nyktos (assuming the anime club is successful up to that point)? Would something like that be okay? In addition to being more fair to people who want to have a group to watch something with that they didn't get to before, it might be good for getting people to watch things they might have normally not wanted to, and possibly getting them into it. Besides, even if a person ends up going last, I don't think that necessarily means they had a bad suggestion.
