@Scrye2 > @Glennmagusharvey: The hugbox only encourages it though, since when someone shoehorns something retarded like "Fakkuheddo-kun Took A Level In Badass when he told the cashier he didn't want to supersize his order, because up until this point, he's been sort of a Shrinking Violet and had trouble saying no to anyone who pressured him into anything. Also counts as a Crowning Moment Of Awesome" all they get in response are "OMG I loved that part too! *Off to the gush thread to gush about you!*" instead of people being able to tell them that that is a horrible fucking example, and that the character is still a bitch.  Because negativity hurts feelings, and criticism is inherently negative. Can't have criticism in our hugbox, now can we?

First of all, that example should be thrown into the YMMV page for the work in question.  I don't know what YMMV page policies are, but damned if that isn't clearly a YMMV.

Not to mention that CMoA is YMMV.

If you think the example just doesn't fit at all, you're free to remove it entirely (or shuffle it over to the YMMV page).  I wouldn't feel bad about doing so, especially since the text is still in the edit history should there be a reason to re-add it.  The alleged hugbox doesn't prevent another user from making an edit.

If you've got a specific, real instance of something like this that you edited and got moderator disapproval over, I'd like to know about it.

@Juan_Carlos > Because the idea is that .Main is supposed to be neutral. It doesn't like or dislikes. It's just that annoying reviewer who gives everything 2.5/5.

It's not supposed to be doing reviewing at all.  It should just aim to describe.

Now for some works, audience opinion is a major facet of our understanding of a work.  For example, Custer's Revenge.  However, for most works, it isn't.

@Neo_Crimson > >Put back all the "sexual" stuff that wasn't sexual, including things
next to other things that were deleted. For crying out loud, if you're
going to try to be a Moral Guardian, pay attention to what you're doing, and at least read the tropes you're deleting. Example: read the last line of Cute Shotaro Boy.
    > The edit reason for reverting all my changes to the MLP character page.

And the person who did them is not a moderator to my knowledge.

Talk it out with them or something.

Wait, Elbeem just told you exactly what to do.  I'm not even familiar with the ATT section myself.

@nohaynicklibre > IJBM: How every non-hideously ugly kid is described as a Cute Shotaro Boy.

If that's the case, we have a problem.  Trope Talk is the first place I would go to to work on that.

@Neo_Crimson > >* HotGoddess: No, unless you go FurryFandom that way. But she is drawn more aesthetically - more clean, shiny, "beautiful" and pretty, right down to her voice - compared to the rest of the cast. It's vaguely implied that she's the ideal for equine beauty in Equestria; the beauty parlor in Ponyville has a picture of a pony with her tall and slender proportions, for instance.

...what the fuck did I just read

"It's funny when people get into the Absent troper thread and post:

"I'm leaving because of the direction the site has taken..."

    Way to be fuckin descriptive."

    HI KINO.

Anyway, on the topic of 'bile' and 'hugfests', I think part of the problem is that people are treating the word 'subjective' as 'meaningless'. If a work is panned by both critics and consumers, saying 'WELL THAT'S JUST THEIR OPINION,' is missing the fucking point. The work was probably bad, and just because some idiot in Jersey City climaxes every time he sees it doesn't change the fact that, for all intents and purposes, the work was a goddamn catastrophe, and there was a reason for it. Furthermore, if a work, like FATAL or Pokegirls contains highly offensive portrayals and content, pretending that's all hunky-dory and skirting around the issue is equally offensive. Just because racist, homophobic pedophiles might think that work is the shit doesn't mean you should just run around pretending there's nothing wrong with it.

A lot of TvTropes users, and frankly, people in general, have somehow gotten it into their head that something being an opinion makes it immune from criticism. The fact is, opinions don't come out of thin air. There's a context behind why people hold certain opinions, and opinions built upon falsehoods, ignorance, and bigotry should NEVER be treated as holding the same weight as opinions based on an understanding of the subject at hand.

The removal of all subjectivity from the wiki, especially negative opinions of works, is frankly part of the reason the site has become so creepy and unpleasant. For example, treating outright racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic works as being simply works with tropes that portray certain groups of people in a negative light, instead of as highly offensive, doesn't paint a nice picture of the site.

  • It's like, TvTropes is America, Something Awful is Europe, and pretty much everyone is Ernest Hemmingway.

Is that who you want to be? Do you want to be Ernest Hemmingway? Do you want to write really simple prose and become a spokesperson for polydactyl cats? Huh? Is that what you want?
  • You can change. You can.
I wouldn't mind being Hemingway. I get to win a nobel prize and be reviled by kids who have a hateboner for literature.

    I've heard of worse fates.

Yes, that qualifies as a worse fate.

On the topic of "being descriptive" when it comes to saying you're leaving the site because of the direction it's taken, I honestly believe that the implications should be pretty clear with just that.

    But here, I'll elaborate.

The site's riddled with security holes, the moderation wobbles between far too lenient and downright Orwellian, trying to make things less terrible in TRS is a losing battle, Troper Tales exists, the moderation is spread too thin to handle everything effectively, the hugbox mentality is overwhelming, Fast Eddie cannot take criticism to save his life, many tropes are not actually tropes, the forums are riddled with problem posters that, for whatever reason, will not be removed permanently, any attempt to improve public relations is met with an "ignore it and it'll go away" sort of deal, many works that deserve some wiki magic are grossly underrepresented and are usually overshadowed by stuff like the anime that shall not be named, and if I saw another advertisement for the trope of the week video I was going to go berserk.

    There.
