"There's evidence for that." Ray agreed. "Many of their actions are cultish and the fanatacism of their base seems to imply a religious bent."

"I suppose the chances of them recruiting such easily-influenced people might depend on their methods of recruiting. Hmm." Jackie decided that she was out of her depth and kept silent on the matter. She had another idea, though. But it would wait for the camp.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
"Well, shit. If that turns out to be true, it changes things. A gang wouldn't want to cut off their supply of money and power. An insane religious cult could do anything in the name of their idol." She glanced back at Bob. "But there's not much evidence for anything yet. We'll just have to learn more."

Later, in the evening... Charles had just finished with getting his tent set up for the guys. He picked up Snow and walked off. "Stay here Dynamo". It was the first thing he said since pissing off Jackie

Heading off, he found a tree to rest under that was just hidden from camp and sat down to think, with Snow in his arms

"Charles, you've been disconcertingly quiet the rest of the trip." Ray said in his kindest voice. "While I respect your privacy if anything untoward happens do not hesitate to scream.

Charles frowned. "...Fine..." he mumbled. Snow look really worried about her trainer.

    "Runt?"

Charles hugged her and waited for Ray to be out of earshot before whispering to Snow. "The others don't like me. You're still my only friend..."

Greg sits down against a tree nearer the tents and looks up at the sky.

Carrie took a seat as Bob practiced his Bone Club on a nearby tree. She pulled off her glasses and started to clean them.

Jackie was about to ask Brandon about something when she noticed Charles sitting off by himself. "Oh, God," she whispered. She thought of walking over, but she didn't know if that would actually help his mood. Then she realized that she had to; he couldn't be left there the whole night. After another second, it occurred to her that she would have to be tender. "Mercer, wait here, okay?" He was just looking around, so he was fine with that.

She walked over slowly. Very slowly. She hoped that he might acknowledge her with at least a glance, so she could trade a gesture of diplomacy before speaking.

Ray began absent-mindedly harmonizing while Phillip sang along. Castle watched in what might have been bewilderment.

Charles looked over. "...What do you want...?" he didn't sound very happy - not a rude, piss off not happy, but a sad not happy

Carrie perched her glasses back on her face. Then, with a mischievious grin, grabbed her camera and snapped a picture of Ray and Phillip.

"Charles," Jackie began. Deep breath. "Okay. If you don't want to accept my apology, I'll understand; I had no right to threaten you with violence, especially since you just misheard me anyway. But I can't just let you sleep out here, under this tree, so far from the rest of us. It's still dangerous out here."

At the flash, Ray's singing instantly stopped and he began stammering. "W-ww-what are you doing?" Ray did an incredibly bad job of his cheeks turning bright red.

Charles frowned. "I've done it before. I'll be fine sleeping out here..." He then got up. "If you want to keep talking, I was going to go for a walk..."

Carrie's grin widened, and she laughed. "Nothing." She calmly plucked the polariois from the slot, and pulled her photo book from her bag.

"Nononono!" Ray said. "Give me that!"

Phillip began chirping cheerfully, clearly amused by his friend's flustered status.

"Okay, then. If you don't mind." Jackie waited for him to start walking, while thinking of how to say what she wanted to say.

Charles began to walk, still not smiling yet. He walked a bit away from the camp, but stuck to the main path

Snow gave off a gentle glow, enough to see by

"Nah." She opened the book to a blank page and carefully slid the picture into one of the clear pockets.

"But.. I'd..." Ray was becoming even more red and his usual eloquence was replaced by awkward stammering.

Carrie was having way too much fun with this. "You'd what?"
Bob laughed silently, enjoying the show.

Greg looks over at Ray and Carrie and laughs.

"Please! It's...." finally as though admitting defeat he hung his head and quietly said "...it's embarrassing..."

"So, anyway." She started walking. "Things could be different this time. Staying out by yourself, I mean. None of us want you getting hurt or anything. You make me angry sometimes, sure, but I don't hate you. Don't we all get angry at some point? I wouldn't want you to feel like you're not welcome; you tend not to think things through before you do them, but your initiative is actually inspiring, in its own way. It gives me the impression that you're holding up really well, in spite of what we're facing."

"Too late. It's in the book. Things in the book are permanent. Right, Bob?"

    Bob nodded solemnly.

You are enjoying this far too much." Ray said trying to keep his cheeks a normal color and failing horribly.

Charles sighed. "Things won't be different this time. Like hanging out with you guys. It was supposed to be different. But I still made everyone mad. And I've had this talk before. You don't really feel sorry. You just don't want to lose somebody to help cover you in battles. I'm welcome in so far as I don't annoy anyone, but I will..."

He cuddled Snow close to his body

    Carrie nodded. "True."
