  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Well, too bad.

The beginning is always the hardest part. I never can get my stories on paper past the beginning because it's difficult doing all that exposistion without info-dumping.

    gah

Then that's a flaw in the story and your writing style. Sucks to be you :>
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Hmmm I can think of at least one movie where the best part is the opening scene (X2: X-men United) but Chagen has a point about openings needing to be about build up.
  • I assume other people have trouble with exposistion as well.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Exposition is always tough to keep from being a talking head info dump. The key is to find a clever way to do it. Bob The Skull from Dresden Files comes to mind.

The key is to find a way to do it that doesn't suck, probably by virtue of making it interesting.

"More damage is done to a car's engine in the first few seconds of starting it than is done through 1000 miles of normal driving.

(Because there's no oil in the engine those first few seconds, and the metal components are grinding against each other without lubrication)"

    Hmm...interesting.

On-topic, there is the In medias res style if you want to just cut to the chase and get to the expository stuff later throughout the story.

  • A good beginning can make up for a LOT of stuff.

For example, when I saw Buffy, I saw a lot of cheesy stuff. Bad special effects, typical characterization, shipping that seemed rather painfully stupid in hindsight...

but the beginning itself was solid. It knew what it wanted to be, and to me, that was awesome.
  • ^^ In medias res also has the advantage of starting the story with action, which usually means excitement (unless you're really bad at it).
