If Harvard law classes are anything like the supervisions on my law degree, they're probably polite enough, but I doubt the content extends to "debate on topics of general interest".
More like "Some 20 year olds bluff their way through legal problems of baroque complexity in front of an unimpressed academic ." Law ain't a subject for bullshitters. Unfortunately, OTC can be a haven for such.
I never intended to imply it did. That was more in reference to statements such as "You will never find a more wretched hive of..." etc.
The official WoW forums are just general forums to talk about an MMO. A level of idiocy is kind of expected, like in every online game ever. That, and every stupid thing the users say can be dismissed as getting too caught up over a game.
OTC, by its nature, is set to a much higher standard. To see people saying what they do on what's supposed to be a serious discussion forum is disheartening to say the least.
I like it in OTC, but I can only tolerate it for so long before I need to bang the stupid out of my brain... But since I'm probably one of "them", take what I said with a grain of salt.
Ah, see, my memory just isn't what it used to be in my younger years. =P

So you're saying that it's bad just by virtue of the fact that you have a higher expectation of OTC?
I don't think that's fair. You can argue that it's not achieving its intended goal, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
"meh."
Either way, OTC is not unique or even especially notable in regards to groups of people on the internet who have shitty opinions.
edit:
Expecting genuine communication and meeting others halfway is not 'really high'.
To me, it is when compared to my experiences with the rest of the internet since I started using it in the late 90s. Perhaps my standards have just been lowered by being a jaded old fart, though.
By the way.
