  • If Harvard law classes are anything like the supervisions on my law degree, they're probably polite enough, but I doubt the content extends to "debate on topics of general interest".

More like "Some 20 year olds bluff their way through legal problems of baroque complexity in front of an unimpressed academic ." Law ain't a subject for bullshitters. Unfortunately, OTC can be a haven for such.

  • You can change. You can.
I'd actually venture to say that the WoW forums were an order of magnitude worse back when I still followed them.

I should mention that there being worse things out there does not justify there being bad things. Also, there's no reason for OTC to suck as much as the WoW forums. There is hardly as many users, every moderator can moderate it easily, etc etc

The problem, as always it's the rules and how ill-defined they are in the name of avoiding the concept of "Rules-lawyering", which does not translate into the quicker and swifter bans that the administration seems to think it'd translate into.
  • I should mention that there being worse things out there does not justify there being bad things.

I never intended to imply it did. That was more in reference to statements such as "You will never find a more wretched hive of..." etc.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Honestly, I think OTC is worse than WoW forums. I might be mistaken since I stuck to the Wowhead forums (which are much better) when I played but...

The official WoW forums are just general forums to talk about an MMO. A level of idiocy is kind of expected, like in every online game ever. That, and every stupid thing the users say can be dismissed as getting too caught up over a game.

OTC, by its nature, is set to a much higher standard. To see people saying what they do on what's supposed to be a serious discussion forum is disheartening to say the least.

It's a Star Wars quote. Why are you taking star wars quotes serieously, silly Meeble?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Anybody who watches political pundit shows should know better than to expect rational discourse when politics and religion (often one and the same) are discussed.
  • You can change. You can.
I'm sorry, but when you're using political pundits as an standard of what most people do, then I must contradict you, because fucking seriously, did you just say that
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Have you ever taken a political science class in college? Because it should give you the same impression.
  • My poli sci class was almost exactly as groan-worthy.
  • You can change. You can.
Then the problem is the people. In this case, precocious teenagers who have a bare understanding of politics, no? Because I never had much of a problem discussing either religion or politics with professors and friends.
  • I think there's a word for it, where a kind of person where the less qualified he is to talk about it, the more he is confident he has the best knowledge of it.
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
That's a type of bias, I think, let me see...

    We call that a "Charlatan"

Socrates also talked about it, making it Older Than They Think.

No, no, no, Charlatan means Zudak's Lover.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Socrates was also a philosopher rather than a psychologist, so there's also that.
  • I like it in OTC, but I can only tolerate it for so long before I need to bang the stupid out of my brain...  But since I'm probably one of "them", take what I said with a grain of salt.

  • It's a Star Wars quote. Why are you taking star wars quotes serieously, silly Meeble?

Ah, see, my memory just isn't what it used to be in my younger years. =P

So you're saying that it's bad just by virtue of the fact that you have a higher expectation of OTC?

I don't think that's fair.  You can argue that it's not achieving its intended goal, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.

If something fails at its intended goal, it can't really be called good.

Cool.  So we judge it thus:

    "meh."
  • I have to admit, Malk speaks wisdom.

Well, frankly speaking, I find OTC to be "acceptable".  It's not particularly good for anything, but it's also not spectacularly bad either.  So my opinion of it really is "meh".
  • You can change. You can.
I don't see how it is not "spectacularly bad"

Of course, it might just be that my standards for discussion are really high or something.

Expecting genuine communication and meeting others halfway is not 'really high'.

My point was not that OTC is specifically better than the WoW forums, but that I have seen similar or worse opinions/behavior on other "general topic of discussion" type forums in various internet communities that I've frequented. I could have sworn that the WoW forums had such when I played several years ago, but I may be misremembering.

Either way, OTC is not unique or even especially notable in regards to groups of people on the internet who have shitty opinions.

    edit:

Expecting genuine communication and meeting others halfway is not 'really high'.

To me, it is when compared to my experiences with the rest of the internet since I started using it in the late 90s. Perhaps my standards have just been lowered by being a jaded old fart, though.
  • By that logic, It's better than IJBM II

    By the way.
