As someone who has only recently gotten a life, I can attest to that.
  • AHR,

I hope I am not interrupting, but what definition of "not having a life" was the person using in that thread? Devoting every waking moment to writing would be the one I am I thinking of, if but he/she was talking about not being super social or into popular things then I feel like the answer may not be as clear. In any event, that sounds like a strange debate topic to me.

    captainbrass,
The positive side is that some of the people involved in OTC are still quite young and participating in it might even help them appreciate this point.

That is a pretty nice way to look at it, but I guess you could go the other route and say that participating in OTC may encourage someone to believe that serious discussions are all about heated arguments on continuous issues. I am probably not giving OTC enough credit though since I agree with glennmagusharvey that it can be a good source of news.

Yeah, OTC is less encouraging new debaters to appreciate nuanced viewpoints and carefully weigh opinions, and more encouraging them to just yell with mild eloquence to try and retroactively justify preconceptions to the bitter end.

^ The final point is true - there have been several major news stories on which I got more or quicker information from OTC than the orthodox media, including the recent English riots.

    Louie: Not at all!

Basically, it's referring to the fact you will be a better writer if you go out and socialize, and experience things, as opposed to staying on the computer all day, and writing.

It's basically a debate on the importance of experience, socializing being one of the main ones.

If you actually want to see the thread and come to your own conclusion, I'll message the link to you.
  • You, know, my various looks at OTC have never revealed it to the Forum equivalent to the Necrominicon like you guys are saying.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Clearly you haven't encountered the likes of Savage Heathen or Love Happiness (is he still around?).
  • edited 2011-10-02 15:39:38
^^^^I just use RationalWiki's "What is going on in the world?" feature for that. It's not unique to OTC.
  • You can change. You can.
Most of the good shit is nuked.

We have had people actively saying that MGS is realistic, people defending the bombing in...Norway? Can't remember and I suck at remembering things. And the general attitude seems to be one of extremisim and circular logic and arguments.

    ". . . people defending the bombing in...Norway? "

I thought that was a shooting. But yeah, that was Tsukubus.

    What's MGS? I'm blanking out.

If you want, Chagen, I could probably find some of those threads for you.
  • Metal Gear Solid?
  • Has friends besides tanks now
Ah, yes. That was it. Thanks, AHR.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
And the thread about Love Happiness wanting to castrate himself too, for good measure.
  • "people defending the bombing in...Norway?"

I refuse to believe this actually happened.
  • You can change. You can.
    Doesn't make it less true~

^^^ Well, it did; Tsukubus said something to the effect of it wasn't that bad, on account of some of the kids at Oslo (rich kids camping on the island or something) might have grown up to be dangerous in the economic climate.

    I don't get it either.
  • I think I get what Moe Dantes said about the Paedofinder General being scary rather than funny to him now.
  • edited 2011-10-02 17:49:05
It happened, Chagen. As much as I wish it didn't happen, it did. Tsukubus is one of the rare people I actually want to punch in the face.

Good thing he's not around anymore, or Love Happiness for that matter. Trust me when I say I knew they were "problem people" from the start.
  • Still, three bad people doesn't make OTC the forum equivalent of the Necrominicon.

By the way, I never go into the huge 1000+ post threads, if that's why I never seem to see this stuff.

If you never see bad stuff, it's because it's usually in threads that get zapped, I think. The 1000+ threads aren't usually that bad. Are they?
  • It's not the necronomicon, more like.... Mobsters...

Mobsters who try to offer you deals that you "can't" refuse.
  • $80+ per session
    But then you refuse them.
  • You refuse them by not posting in OTC.
  • $80+ per session
    Yeah, I don't think I've ever made a post there...But I might be wrong.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
@Chagen: Those people are just the visible problem, and they're far from the only ones. Like others have said, there's the problem with cyclical arguments, extremism, bad logic, and how vehemently people defend their own arguments just makes it an incredibly frustrating place to be.

Granted, this happens whenever ANY argument pops up on TvTropes (which I think is why FE instated the No Negativity policy), but OTC has the highest concentration by far. That's why I hate it so much.
  • It only takes one person to make everything go to shit for another.
  • @AHR

    No kidding huh :3

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
    >It only takes one person to make everything go to shit for another.

i know how u feel sis.

I stayed away from any "game politics" topics in the Video Game forums on the off chance that Signed posted there and invariably made the entire thread facepalm worthy.
