If you have nice people to play with, and beyond that it depends on the class. Scouts and soldiers and pyros are pretty basic, but things like the engineer and the spy require more strategy and knowledge of the layouts of the maps than anything.

There are some guides on the wiki which I am assuming are not complete shit, but I've never actually read any of them.

Just play Attack/Defend to get to know the game.

Scouts are fun, I think I've jumped on 3 people's heads and killed them with a bat so far.

Try this Myr

Run the game in a previous version of Direct X. Do this by opening Steam and right-click on TF2. Go to Properties and Set Launch Options. Enter -dxlevel 81 (for DX 8.1) and click ok.
