  • Wait, what? Weird, I haven't encountered that. Sounds more like a bug than anything intentional.

    http://co2now.org/

Great site.  But that top navigation bar is not so great.

If you mouse over anything but the active "tab", it brings up a list of sub-topics.  If you want to click any of them, you can move your mouse cursor over to them and click them.

...but your mouse cursor has to stay within that thin bar the entire time as you move over.  Try mousing over "@ This Site" and moving your mouse all the way over to "About CO2 Now".  I just had to do that.

    Go to Amazon.com.

Click the search bar.  Start typing.  Now mouse over Shop by Department.

Watch as the menu pops open...and your text box loses focus.

Enjoy it as you're typing and your palm moves the mouse cursor over there.

  • Programs that are unaware you can change the global text size and base their GUI on absolute positioning. I have a 15'' 1080p screen, I have to set the global text size to 125% or larger just so I don't strain my eyes.

...previously, I used Adblock on Firefox but didn't download a premade list.

I would choose individual advertisers to block one by one.

At some point, probably with an update, Adblock decided to start using EasyList.  It was last updated two days ago.

...okay, Adblock, you're no longer getting automatic updates, if those updates are gonna break my custom settings.

I've been trying to play DVDs from another region using an external DVD drive, but it doesn't seem to work Does libdvdcss not work with external drives? (am using a version of Ubuntu, btw) VLC and SMPlayer both don't work, although SMPlayer apparently manages to play the stuff before the menu comes on one DVD I tried, yet the movie itself didn't play at all.

Also, are there any external DVD drives that are region free by default? Google gets me this thing on Amazon, but a customer review says it is not region free, so I'm wary of anything described or advertised as such, unless somebody can confirm me it is region free.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

The Dolphin browser REALLY don't like the moblie version of this site. For some reason it wants to capitalize all the words in my sentences. That is when it doesn't just crash when I try to post.

Why does Windows not natively recognize Ctrl+Backspace as "delete word"?

This is the case when working with explorer.exe (i.e. the filesystem), doing things like changing filenames.

This is also the case in notepad.

Instead of deleting the word to the left of the cursor, it inserts some unknown character which usually looks like a rectangle.

  • Basically, Ctrl+Backspace was added as an undocumented feature by a handful of developers who wanted it, so its implementation ended up ultimately being kinda half-assed.

It's one of those things where knowing the story behind it makes it seem less random, but not any less facepalm-worthy.

    My grandmother's computer

    Oh dear god

12 instances of trojans, something like 8 worms, tons of malware and adware...

Apparently Avast! decided to expire and not offer the switch to the free version

Her computer sometimes has a huge alert before shutting down. I think it's Spybot trying to protect the computer from one of the multitudes of virii on it, but I'm not sure if it can even do that
  • Hahaha, reminds me of the time I had to "fix" a computer for my mother's friend.

Turned out her entire family had been using it since their computer broke. This was in the Windows XP era, so of course each and every one of them was going around using IE 6 on every website known to man. On Administrator accounts, natch.

After the first virus scan caught over 100 things I talked to her and we decided the prudent thing to do was just wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows. With up-to-date antivirus software this time.

  • I notice Gmail addressed one of the issues mentioned earlier in this thread: When they first rolled out the new editor, it showed the nickname of the person you were sending a message to, but not their email address. Now they've tweaked it so the email address appears in parentheses after the nickname.

Nice to know that some web developers do acknowledge when they've made a mistake.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

Honestly, in cases like that, I'd recommend ComboFix. It's a bit of a nuclear option because of how powerful it is, but unless things are really really bad, it doesn't tend to break anything.

A Mind You Do NOT Want To Read

I'm still having trouble getting used to the fact that OSX's Finder doesn't let you move or copy files using the Cut, Copy and Paste keyboard shortcuts...

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Then how are you supposed to move/copy files?  Other than using the mouse.

  • a little muffled

Using the mouse, presumably. Or a touch screen. Keyboards are for old people.

A Mind You Do NOT Want To Read

Yeah, I have to have two Finder windows open at once and drag the file(s) from one window to the other.

I mean, can you even believe that? It's bullshit!

    > Keyboards are for old people.

No, keyboards are for people who want to do things really quickly, without having to reposition hands or cursors.

    a little muffled

Apple™ believes that trying to do things as quickly as possible leads to stress. OS X™ is designed to encourage working at a relaxing, leisurely pace.

Then what is their stance on convenience?  On not having to move one's hand over to the mouse and back?

  • a little muffled

Apple™ believes in reinventing convenience for the modern age.

    The IRCs want you(r soul): irc.esper.net, #ijbm

Worth noting; on macs most keyboard shortcuts that used ctrl use alt/apple key instead. pretty sure same goes for cut copy and paste too, though I'd have to doublecheck my vm

And just checked my VM now that I'm on the laptop; alt-X/C/V do exist but for some reason, cut is always grayed out; copy isn't. Weird.

Ugh, Gelbooru is now using animated porn ads.

Not even Danbooru is this bad.  Danbooru may have porn ads but at least they're static.

This isn't the case, however.  I'm still seeing only the nickname.

Furthermore, when I start typing, the cursor starts off one line lower than the top.

  • *double-checks*

Weird, for some people it shows the email address in parentheses and for others it just shows the nickname. I have no idea why.
