  • If the winds at Fukushima had blown southward, towards Tokyo, or if something like Chernobyl had happened in insanely densely settled Germany

The way power plants are now, something like Chernobyl is literally impossible, and likewise, there are plenty of places where stuff like Fukushima cannot happen. I'm not saying it's risk free, or that they should be used everywhere, but it is certainly overstated. Besides, to stop investing on them only makes an accident more likely, because the ones that are still working are old and therefore less safe.

Eh, how so? Solar cells are still ridiculously inefficient. Water power works, but only if you have the right geography. Geothermal and tidal power are even more dependent on geography. Meanwhile, you can put wind parks most everywhere and they have a better efficiency than solar cells. So wind power should IMO definitely be the flagship for regenerative power.

Solar cells are inefficient, yes, but they are significantly more mobile: You can put them on a car or a space station, so they have a niche. Geothermal, tidal and water are dependant on geography, but they all provide significantly more energy than wind. The problem with wind is that it takes a lot of space, and it becomes progressively less efficient the more you make (because you use the best suited places first, and are then left with progressively worse locations), I guess I was being hyperbolic, since it's certainly useful, but I don't think it can ever become the world's first source of energy.

Ultimately, what's annoying about that image is that, as of now, the only reasonable way to break our dependency on oil and coal and still mantain a quality of life resembling what we've got now is by using all of these energy sources, yet people are somehow convinced that we can slap 50.000.000 windmills all over the globe and somehow make do.

No nuclear plant is 100% safe. And due to the severity of the risk, this physically impossible 100% safety would be the only safety level acceptable. Which is why there should be a stop in investment and the old plants should simply be stopped. That's what we did here.

And then, there's the question of nuclear waste which will literally be deadly for several times longer than the existence of human civilization so far.

True, but really only a niche. They can be used as decentralized supplementary power. And certainly geothermal, tidal and water power should be used where they can, I certainly don't say anything against that! But that really is just a very few places. The universal form of regenerative power really is wind, hence. It surely doesn't take up more space than solar plants (but then I think centralized solar plants are a mistake anyway), and surely less than water power (the reservoirs). And since it is hence the most versatile form of regenerative power, it is the one people associate most with the concept - and I think that is meant on the image. It doesn't advocate so much wind power, but rather uses wind power as symbol for all green energies, I think.

  • Definitely not gay.

Ah, Saren. I knew him well.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

Whatever happened to Instant Messengers, for example? They used to be really popular, but nowadays everybody seems to be on facebook or twitter... which is much the same except everybody can read along.

And that last part is where the importance comes in: Mass proliferation of information, instead of targeting it at specific individuals one by one.

  • I don't even call it violence when it's in self defence; I call it intelligence.

That is definitely a big minus for me, and nothing good. I can understand wanting to keep in touch, but to me that means talking to each other and not screaming one's information out to the whole world.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

...Except it's not to the whole world unless you actively set it to be. That's why privacy settings exist.

  • I don't even call it violence when it's in self defence; I call it intelligence.

Eh, my point was that 'keeping in touch' for me means talking to people. If I don't talk to them, why should I be interested in their updates? I don't care. And really, I wouldn't care to post mine, either. If my friends want to know what's up with me, which is fair enough, they can talk to me. Be it offline or online.

  • a little muffled

Facebook certainly has a chat feature which is basically the same thing as IM. For that matter, so does Steam.

I do still use MSN Messenger to talk to my one other friend who still uses it though.

I've pretty much turned into a social networking whore.

By the way, my godfather, a union leader, was arrested along with five other people because they embezzled somewhere around 700 000 euros. He definitely deserved it, but I feel sorry for his family. He and his wife have three children, one of which has a serious form of autism and taking care of him will be even harder now.

Pretty much everything he had done in the last two or three years was to the detriment of his family.

I thought Messenger was down now?

  • A Mind You Do NOT Want To Read
It's going through a sunset period so that all its users have plenty of time to migrate their accounts to Skype.
  • a little muffled

They're forcing everyone to switch to Skype in...less than a month, it looks like. Annoying.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

Huh, they pushed forward the original deadline then.

"Already in 2003 in a Euro barometer study, it was asked which countries are dangers to world peace. Israel came in second place after Iran. This was the opinion held by 59% of the Europeans. In the Netherlands, the percentage was the highest at 74%.”

“With such a diabolical opinion of the Jewish state, millions of Dutchmen are thus back in the Middle Ages mentally. Today, there are more Dutchmen with this insane viewpoint than the number of Nazis in the Netherlands during the Second World War."

    Oh my, this is hitlarious.

I love "criticizing banks is anti-semitism" even more.

  • I've got twenty dollars, and I'm not sure whether I should buy a pizza and curly fries, or just sit on it. Any suggestions?

  • I don't even call it violence when it's in self defence; I call it intelligence.

Geez. It's four to eight Euros here, depending on toppings. Mind, Italian style pizza, what you call New York style, which I guess does tend to be cheaper. The only restaurant or chain that carries Chicago style here is Pizza Hut...

    Similar prices to Formaldehyde here.

You poor soul. Come over to my neck of the woods and I'll treat you to the real stuff.

  • But you never had any to begin with.
Geeze, are you guys being strongarmed by the pizza mafia or something? You can get a 12'' pizza for a fiver here, and that's not just cheese.

Not everyone lives in pizzaland alice :(

Ah yes, Pizza Hut. I remember going there with my parents when I was 7 and talking with my dad and bro about how superior Sbarro was.

Sbarro IS better, but that only goes to show how much Pizza Hut sucks.

Well, a pepperoni pizza is 4.50€ at most places I order here. I have no idea about measurements, just 'standard pizza size' ;) Just cheese and tomato sauce (the most basic: Pizza Margherita) is the 4€ lower limit I mentioned. And upwards in price you can get all fancy with your toppings...

Alas, a trip to your neck of the woods would probably cost some dozens of pizzas worth of money :p
