Everything happens for a reason. The goal of the Marxist method in social sciences is to uncover the reasons why injustices are the way they are, so they can be dealt with with a direct blow to the head. Strict positivism, anti-theoreticism and the denial of structures of oppression have historically only served conservative, reactionary causes, ever since Comte.

Politics are fine so long as we don't start channeling /r/atheism.
^^^"Strict positivism" is the base of every science. If you truly want to elevate social sciences on the same level as natural sciences you must apply the same scrutiny. Trying to find the reasons for injustices is a good cause, but you're only truly going to achieve that by applying strict scientific standards. Otherwise, you end up with a lot of talking points, but no actual discovery. And in any case, the doctrinarian, dogmatic nature of Marxism is inherently anti-scientific anyway. I don't recognize a "Marxist method" in the social sciences, only ideology-pushing.
Hey, guys
I'm part of an organization whose de facto leader once unironically said "Marx, don't be an anarchist, that is petit bourgeoise!" To a cat. After it ripped his checkered hipster shirt.
Don't expect much sanity from me when it comes to politics.
Before I became a semiregular redditor I assumed the stories about /r/atheism were exaggerations at the very least.
They're not.
I went through a stage after I started redditing regularly where I found myself subscribing (figuratively) to the general sort of atheism prevalent on that subreddit.
I look back on those days with disgust.
So, not being a redditor myself, what's so bad about that subreddit? Is it really that bad, or are people just dismissing it with the same ease as they dismiss Dawkins, for example?
Take one look at its main page. That should tell you all you need to know.
I'll summarise what I feel are the main issues:
- The majority of the content on the subreddit is one of three types of post: screenshots (usually taken seconds after they were made) of the redditor 'owning' some religious person on Facebook (admittedly sometimes these ones are warranted, like when the religious person is being blatantly hateful and intolerant, but I find these to be in the minority, with most of them being the OH SO BRAVE "Thank God my mother survived her battle with cancer" "Thank Science*, you mean" types of posts);
-- Quotes from famous atheists overlaid over a picture of that atheist (funnily enough, /r/4chan posted a Hitler quote over a picture of Neil DeGrasse Tyson and it made it to the front page of the subreddit);
-- And 'Sheltering Suburban Mom' memes, which is usually captioned something like "I JUST overheard this, couldn't believe what I was hearing", and the meme itself is usually something like "So I heard they found the god particle. You must be feeling pretty silly now, huh?".
- General intolerance, hatred and circlejerking. You see the occasional "this is the type of Christian I like" posts, but for the most part the subreddit just focuses on bashing fundamentalists.
Actually, I think that covers it, from my point of view. My apologies; I'm quite certain I'm forgetting something, so hopefully somebody else will be able to fill in the gap.
So today I went back to school. Started on English for academia. It was pretty fun.
Kind of disappointed that the only ones who chose the assignment about sexism in the workplace was me, my brother, and four five other girls out of a class of about ninety. Easy work is clearly the priority.
How is sexism in the workplace not an easy topic?
Also, the humanities vs. sciences undertone is tad silly: both have influenced and benefitted each other throughout history. To say scientific rigor is ideologically neutral is a fallacy(look at Butler's description of the master gen controversy-a gen which would determine sex was labeled 'active' in men and 'passive' in women, which were arbitrary labels not validated by the scientific evidence), same as the notion that deconstruction of Marxist historical narrative maintains the status quo instead of being liberating and counter-oppression(f. ex., marxists appropriating narratives of other oppressed groups in order to show that capitalism is a totalizing system).
Apparently alternative energy and healthcare is easier.
Although it is a difficult one; one in the study group burst into tears for some reason.
...which would make this lacking scientific rigour, surely?
Now clearly all kinds of sciences, natural or social, are done by people, and hence the pursuit of them is as affected by the phenomena the social sciences study as any other human activity. That much is obvious. And I really don't want to denigrate social sciences, that's not my intent. In fact, as I've said, I do want both social and natural sciences to be treated the same, and that means they must both use the same kind of scrutiny. To denounce positivism is just unscientific and hence should have no place in either field.
True, but positivism can also stray too far in the direction of taking absence of evidence as evidence of absence, especially with regards to social sciences. On the other hand, social sciences often suffers from WEIRD syndrome, so it's a question of balance.
So earlier today I sat down next to someone whom I thought looked like a real-life (and slightly older) version of Erika Kurumi.
Real-life person was a girl with a really cute face (read: round face, less prominent lips) and long wavy light blond hair. Yes, I know Erika has blue hair, but we all know that that doesn't occur naturally.
Be afraid, they might say they shouldn't either. I've seen some of these in the depths of 'Net.
Then tell them you had better see them organizing protests against marriages involving infertile people.
Some stranger dictating what people are and are not allowed to do with their lives is nothing new.

Bastion, up 'till now I had no idea you were also Haven. I just assumed you were someone else.
You have kept your identity secret from me for an admirably long time. Well done.
I should note that most of these, like the Hitler/Tyson mockup, are things that the atheists in question have never said.
Basically r/atheism is full less of the sort of genuine, civil discussion you'd like from a board about religion (or rather, lack thereof), and more of the sort of "fuck you mom and dad I am ATHEST" people.
And yeah, they tend to basically masturbate to Neil deGrasse Tyson. Who I'm sure is a fine scientist and a good enough guy, but there are better things to admire him for than his atheism. It doesn't really help that Tyson seems to enjoy the support he gets from reddit in general.
The one time I visited the christian subreddit (its name escapes me, I don't think it's just r/christianity though I might be wrong) I actually found it a lot more tolerable.
Also, this is my personal favorite subreddit.
My favourite is /r/asoiaf, followed by /r/sloths, despite how it seems to have more reposts than any other subreddit I know of.
I like r/hhh due to it being a few IQ points above most rap forums. I don't visit too many of the big ones, though.
Funnily enough, despite all the time I spend on reddit (since it's one of the few things I have to fill my days; I really need a hobby. With some luck and a few more days, I may be able to start cycling again though, so I'm looking forward to that) I still don't have an account. It's probably the last step before opening the floodgates.
I have one. I don't post much though, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle with the upvote system they have.
