There have been reported cases of it happening anywhere in the game, but for the most part, you are right.
So, The Walking Dead is on iPad. My mom has an iPad, but is incredibly intimidated by any technology more complex than that. Considering getting it for her.

Well, my concerns are that a)she's never really had much of an interest in games and b)she's intimidated by technology she isn't used to.
Well, you're never going to get rid of a) without her playing any game in the first place. I can see why b) might be an issue but you mentioned previously that you gotten her interested on the game and I imagine that she's used to the iPad so you might as well do that and walk her through it so that she doesn't feel intimidated.
What RPG (probably a JRPG) has a main town/hub/city called Haven?

And TWD is simple, relatively speaking, so I think she should be okay with it.
Although, if you want to get her into games and she didn't have any experience with them beforehand, it's best to start with the really simple stuff like Facebook games or flash games on the internet.

Well, I can't really comment much about how it compares to other versions of the game, but my main memory of it was that around halfway through the game, the portion of the plot I cared about got resolved.
