God damn it, it looking like I will get nothing done between my new laptop, borderlands 2,and torchlight 2, and thanks to the recent conversation the siren song of the elder scrolls series is calling to me.
^Take your sick days. ALL of your sick days.
I just tried using my debit card to buy the Indie Royale bundle.
Declined. Probably because it's an international transaction?
Well, gonna be a good long while before I can get a photo ID with my local address (such that my IP address doesn't run afoul of my physical address in Paypal's records), so it'll be a long time before I can use Paypal.
So much for buying games on my own.
Holy shit, Borderlands 2 is fun.
I'm not really sure that Borderlands 2 will run well on my laptop, since it struggles to run Black Mesa, but it looks like something I would enjoy.
Just finished Black Mesa. Theory: Much like Aperture Science is a shower curtain manufacturer, Black Mesa is a crate manufacturer. Why else would they have them lying all over the place?
Why do classes that start with B suck so much?
@MrW: Evidence heavily suggests that Black Mesa is not that well-optimized. Still, do a benchmark test or whatever.
^Maybe because their abilities are limited to "suck and BYEEEH!"? /GameGrumps
^^Berserkers exist. Your argument is invalid.
You're not helping your case.
Blue mages, on the other hand...
lolwut
I had to teach Galuf Black magic just to get him past the 1st few parts of the game 'cus blue magic did jack shit
^ The problem is that early-game blue magic isn't that useful, IIRC. You basically have a Fight-command class unless you're using Goblin Punch. If you're lucky you might get Aero and Aqua Breath. I don't remember the details of FFV though.
I've noticed that blue mages always have those same several spells, and they're generally not that useful. Though there are always a few spells that redeem the entire class.
You usually have Aero (and sometimes Aero 2 and Aero 3), which is basically the only wind magic in a standard FF spell repertoire. It is not grouped with black magic for some reason; only fire, lightning, and ice have standard 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order spells in the black magic repertoire. Add in cure in the white magic repertoire, and that's the end of it.
Then you have some water-based attack, such as Aqua Breath. Like Aero, this is an element not represented by pretty much any other spell. Usually doesn't get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order forms though.
Then you have the Level-Something Whatever spells. These only affect enemies of a certain subset of levels (all levels divisble by the Something), and make the otherwise-useless (to the player, at least) level stats for enemies actually matter. Generally these are hit or miss, and notably, bosses can be set to level 97 or any other prime number. Usually there's L. 5 Doom which is instant death, and L. 4 gets a strong spell and L. 3 gets a status-effect spell. Relatedly, there's also Goblin Punch, which deals extra damage against enemies at the same level as the user. These spells are more useful when there are ways to change enemy levels (such as halving them or doubling them, which conincidentially also causes rounding).
Then you might have Magic Hammer, which deals MP damage.
Then you have Mighty Guard, which is defensive, meaning you have to confuse or control the enemy into doing this on your blue mage. It adds physical defense and magical defense boosts.
Then you have Revenge, which deals damage equal to max HP - current HP. Which is marginally useful.
Then you have Self-Destruct/Exploder, which KOs the user and deals supposedly heavy damage to the target, usually equal to the user's HP. Never a useful spell.
Then you have Condemned/Countdown/Death Sentence, which sets a timer against an enemy and when it hits zero, that enemy dies. Problem is that said countdown takes forever, and the battle will almost certainly be over when it finishes counting. And it probably doesn't work on bosses. So it's even more useless than Self-Destruct.
Then you have Roulette, which is basically random death, and is a pain in the ass to get. This is even more useless than Condemned.
Then you have White Wind, which heals the entire party by user's current HP. A very useful spell.
Then you have random other shit. Status spells, stat change spells, attack spells, defensive spells, draining spells, healing spells, or combinations of those.
Among them will almost certainly be one or two very powerful attack spells, that are never cheap but are about on par with top-tier black magic spells as heavy-hitting late-game spells.
Wait blue mages can learn aqua breath
I think generally speaking, yes.
FF games usually have more than just fire, ice, lightning, and holy as their elements. Typical other elements include dark/shadow, wind, water, and earth. While F/I/L usually gets a base set of workhorse spells in the black magic series, and holy gets the curative spells (only on undead) and the Holy/White/Pearl attack spell, the others are often poorly represented. Aqua Breath/Aqua Rake/Aqualung usually covers water, while Aero covers wind. Quake/Earthquake often gets grouped in with black magic, on the other hand.
Note that FFV's Aqua Breath is non-elemental, but simply deals extra damage against desert creatures, and FFVII's Aqua Rake is both water- and wind-elemental.
FFV's Aqua Breath can be learned as early as the Library. It's nigh-suicidal, but it can be done.
Also, Blue Mages can get Vampire, which is an excellent healing spell. (And has a glitch where you can cast it on yourself.)
There's a reason Blue Mages are considered one of the best classes in FFV.
DISREGARD
EVERYTHING
(I knew there was a Gyarados somewhere in Galuf's magikarp. Too bad he dies later and renders all of my hard work useless)
His skills get transferred to his successor.
More importantly, blue mages are cool as fuck.
And when all else fails, like Red Mages, Blue Mages get decent weapons and armor.
What are you talking abou-
Oh.
So it appears I can't buy Indie Royale by myself. Should I?
A) beg someone else for it, possibly seeing if I can get Humble Bundle to exchange with them?
just not bother with it at all since my main reasons for buying the game are (1) supporting Rockin' Android, (2) getting Flying Red Barrel, and (3) getting the Bunny Must Die OST?
At least it's not like the later Dragon Quest games where casters become wholly useless for everything but healing after the halfway mark because melee classes get free attack skills that hit the same number of targets and do more damage than your best expensive AOE spells.
Well, to be fair, it's usually melee classes that get shafted in balance. At least it's something different.
/notbiasedatalllol
Someone's been playing a lot of 3.5...
It's a really difficult thing to balance for sure. Typically higher damage output from casters is justified by them working with a limited resource that you can't use willy-nilly but save up for when it counts, but there's pretty much no reason to do the opposite. And in Western RPGs they have considerably more freedom of positioning.
I think World of Warcraft hit the best balance with that after a couple of expansions by actually giving everyone just enough flexibility in utility to have the best advantage with a varied dps breakdown instead of just stacking a shitload of X and hoping you could carry the rest.
I want to download a Yume Nikki fangame, but I'm not sure on which. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a shitty one for the whole week. I'll try Lcd Dem since it seems to be pretty popular. I've also thought about Me but for what I read it tries too hard to be .flow and I was never interested on .flow in the first place
Okay, beat Mother in the La-Mulana remake. That was a good finish to the game. Except for the 4th phase. That was extremely underwhelming and pathetic. I can see why they changed her 4th phase, but come on, really devs?
Oh hey, they gave special thanks to Deceased Crab and Madamluna in the credits. Overall, I had a very good experience with the remake, and I thought the devs did a good job with it.
Then I immediately decided to sully that feeling by going back to Hell Temple. I'll detail the changes later.
And then I beat it. ARGH, MY BRAIN!
Is there
Oh, and to answer your earlier question about whether or not they changed the medicine puzzle for Hell Temple,
Oh, and opening the equipment screen once you beat Hell Temple will reveal a brain scarring image of... well, click at your own displeasure. NOT SAFE FOR WORK OR BRAINS!
Late night idle TV Troping has led me to the page for the old King’s Quest games.
I don’t suppose any of you embryos remember when this was a big game? Point-and-click adventure series? Prided itself on being insanely obtuse?
Oh, and evidently there’s a fan remake. Need to check that out.
