    People hyping up a work doesn't usually affect my ability to enjoy it unless I'm actually expecting it to be as good as they say it is but... it isn't, but it definitely does make me less likely to start it in the first place.

    I tend to enjoy a work more when I check it out based on my own interest. The interest may be inspired by someone else's positive account of it, but I still feel I made a conscious decision. Hype works against that as I feel like I see it just to understand what the fuss is about, not so much to enjoy it.

    Though this tendency is pretty dumb considering Bile (Negative Hype) Fascination motivates me a lot too.

    For some reason this happened to me with Negima, except it was more like me going all "oh hey everyone thinks this is awesome so I better check it out" and then I went all "ehhh" rather than "fuck trying it out"

    Yeah.  I don't think hype aversion is necessarily a matter of trying to look cool by being contrary.  It's more like, if you hear a lot about how good something is, unless it really does end up being completely amazing, you're probably going to be disappointed with it and you'll like it less than you otherwise would if you hadn't had prior expectations.

    I just think that that's literally the worst reason to not watch/not enjoy something.

    I'd been hearing from one of my friends about for years about how totally awesome Black Lagoon is, because  he was trying to get me into anime.

    For a long time, I didn't watch it. Not because I was sick of hearing how awesome it was, but because I didn't think I would enjoy it, and because I was resistant to watching Anime at the time.

    Then I eventually watched it, and I did really enjoy it  It's one of my favorite shows now, and it would be stupid if I hadn't watched it because I heard how good it was.  Or enjoyed it less for that reason.

    See, it's one thing to give something like Homestuck a chance and then not like it, or to not read it because it's not the type of thing you think you'd enjoy.  Everyone has different tastes, it's perfectly fine to not like something that everyone else does.

    It's just when people start not liking things specifically because they're popular, or have heard people hyping, that I get kind of irritated.

    MLP:FIM causes a lot of this.

    A lot of this is because of the premise and general 'cutesiness' of the show.

    There may be factors BEHIND the Hype Aversion that the person is not consciously aware of.

    The premise is the main reason why I don't watch it.

    If it replaced all the ponies with bunnies I would watch it.
