  • "Just accept that you can't convert everyone to ponydom, Gelzo."

    "Are you a human?"

    I don't think I like this thread.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Watership Down is the shit.

  • You can change. You can.
It's not like I'm saying you should try to lower expectations, I'm just wondering why they aren't lowered.

Can't say why, to be perfectly honest... :/
  • Just letting you know, the better parts of MLP start around episode 3.
  • You can change. You can.
You better be right, Ninjaclown...because I'm giving it another chance after that boring pilot...

Of course, it'll have to wait as I finish the semester and I make sure that nobody notices I'm watching that. :P
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
"It gets better! You just have to get through the stupid, boring parts first... But it gets better! I swear, it's not subjective at all!"
  • That's a generalization. The funny thing is, any other time I would have AGREED with you.
  • You can change. You can.
"It gets better! You just have to get through the stupid, boring parts first... But it gets better! I swear, it's not subjective at all!"

Um, not to offend you, but you and I like two shows that are known for a relatively boring beginning...and fantastic pick up
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    I know.

I don't bug people into watching them, though, because I don't want to have to tell them "It gets better, I swear!".
  • You totally could, I wouldn't mind.
  • You can change. You can.
And the wheel of time...and Nanoha...and Firefly...

But the point is that I don't see why you should generalize other people's actitudes, much less when the recommendation didn't go to you, nor addressed you in no way at all.

And the wheel of time...and Nanoha...and Firefly...

    a) I've never even watched Firefly -_-  Nor recommended it.

    b)  I recommended them to YOU and to Morven, because you two don't mind.

And I never generalized an attitude; I pointed out the flaws in that way of thinking.

    ...

Dawg, I could have sworn you said you liked it the other day...

But the point is not that and you know it. And it's just a flaw for you, you know. As you said, it is indeed subjective whether the wait is worth it at all, let alone enjoyable.

  • The pilot is pretty much the show's first impression, where it gives you a small preview of what the rest of the show is going to be like (or should be like). While it's understandable that a series can get better (or worse), you can't really fault anyone for not wanting to see a show if they don't care for the pilot.

I know no one here was implying that, I just felt like saying it.

I like Serenity, if that's worth anything. Never watched Firefly.

The point is that it is subjective. Saying "It hits its' stride later" is NOT a valid argument, because you are expecting people to sit through something they consider mediocre in order to get to the part YOU consider good without taking into consideration that others may not agree.

It's the reason I used to have a sig saying "Everything I say is subjective".

But Cygan, didn't you know? Subjectivity is subjective.

    ...Wait a minute...
  • I knew it. Paradox created, universe destruction in 3...2...1...
  • You can change. You can.
@cygan ;To me, it is better than Serenity itself. Although that might be because Firefly emphasizes the Western aspect...

But my point is simply that it is indeed a valid argument towards a show enjoyment. Sometimes good things are earned by patience, you know?

It's a rather silly argument on my side, but what I mean is just that I don't think that something should be thrown away just because of a first bad impression.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
You shouldn't throw it away because if a bad impression. However, you must realize that people do not want to have to watch mediocre crap to get up to the good bits.

Book 7 of the Wheel of Time is great IMHO. Should I ask people to suffer through the 6 proceeding books to get up to it?
  • To be fair, MLP supposedly does get better a few episodes later.
  • You can change. You can.
In my opinion, if you like it, it's not wrong to suggest it, while making a note that the build up to it might not be enjoyable.

As long as you aren't pushy about your recommendations nor force it upon me, I'm fine with it.

But you still have to watch the worse stuff first.

^ Which is why I recommend stuff to you.

But what if the worse stuff is good? Because the thing is that the show gets better, not that the show starts badly and then it gets better...

I will actually listen to recommendations if I am actually told what elements would appeal to me personally. "It's really good" is meaningless without saying why, because after all, what is good to you might not be so much to me.

"It gets better" is used too often as a moving the goalposts phrase that again, I want to know what makes it better later on.

  • "I will actually listen to recommendations if I am actually told what elements would appeal to me personally. "It's really good" is meaningless without saying why, because after all, what is good to you might not be so much to me."

This. Like, if someone recommended me a show and said it was good because it had blood and explosions and stuff, I'd totally watch it. If someone told me a show was good because of ponies and (supposed) cuteness, no thanks.
  • The pilot of MLP is definitely not what you want to watch if you want to be given a good first impression. I woudn't say it's bad, but it's clichéd even compared to the other episodes and isn't a great indication of the slice of life plots that happen in almost every other episode. It also has in what my opinion is the most cheesy scene in the series.

A good start would probably be Dragonshy or Swarm of the Century if you have misgivings. There are episodes that are better, but they aren't as enjoyable if you're not more familiar with the characters. If you think you can tough it out, you should probably start with the pilot. It's a good introduction to the personalities of the characters, and explains why the main character is in the show's setting to begin with.

And you know, I don't try to get people to check out the things I like because I want everyone to agree with me or think like me or anything. I don't want to bother or nag or try to guilt people into liking something. It's just that if something is really enjoyable in my experience, I'd at least like to let people know about it and have the opportunity to enjoy it, too. I can deal with people not liking it, but just know that it's just as annoying to see people trash talk something as it is to see them gush over it.
  • Alright. I can understand that.

-will stop bashing MLP for the time being until everyone starts jizzing themselves over it again-
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
But what if the worse stuff is good? Because the thing is that the show gets better, not that the show starts badly and then it gets better...

Then why the fuck are you complaining about the first lot of episodes -_-

    You can change. You can.
I don't bash it. I just don't like it and I think that there isn't anything particularly wrong with you liking it, that's all.

I mean, I saw the "Tree" scene a while ago and I commented that I didn't like it, I don't think it's bad or awful, it's just not my cup of tea.

^ Sometimes good stuff is unfullfilling due to the hype. Like, you're watching something and you're waiting to see why people make such a big deal out of it, you know?

Just to clarify, the last time I made some snide comment about My Little Pony, it wasn't because I hated the show itself, but it was because I disliked fads in general. Actually, I mentioned anime because it was hinting "Thank Master Hand the Madoka Magica fad can end now."
