It bugs me that I know this is stupid, but I won't stop.

  • Not sure I understand the OP. You're bugged by other people doing this, or yourself?

    As do I.

I realized today that I seem to have this with Madoka. Feels strange.
  • I try to avoid this whenever I can.

But in spite of that, I still haven't seen Cowboy Bebop yet.

  • People hyping up a work doesn't usually affect my ability to enjoy it unless I'm actually expecting it to be as good as they say it is but... it isn't, but it definitely does make me less likely to start it in the first place.
  • You can change. You can.
I normally can't touch a work with an active fandom. Mostly because I like sane discussion and...well...I know they won't provide.

  • I never understood why this attitude is so prevalent.

Me too, which is why I'm so surprised that I have some Hype Aversion for Madoka...

I tend to enjoy a work more when I check it out based on my own interest. The interest may be inspired by someone else's positive account of it, but I still feel I made a conscious decision. Hype works against that as I feel like I see it just to understand what the fuss is about, not so much to enjoy it.

Though this tendency is pretty dumb considering Bile (Negative Hype) Fascination motivates me a lot too.

  • I don't really understand why people do this, either.
  • For some reason this happened to me with Negima, except it was more like me going all "oh hey everyone thinks this is awesome so I better check it out" and then I went all "ehhh" rather than "fuck trying it out"
  • "Childhood-raping"

What the fuck does that even mean? Did you like the shitty older series so much that watching something in the franchise made with care would shit on your nostalgia?
  • There is nothing worse that can be done to the old series that it hasn't already done to itself.
  • Now I want to watch the 80s series and enjoy it, out of spite.

    'Iconoclast' only has one s...
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Hype Aversion is the stupidest thing ever.
  • ^But how else am I going to look cool in front of my internet friends?
  • You can change. You can.
Hype Aversion is the stupidest thing ever.

I hate ebing like this, honestly, but to me it is harder to get into a work when there's a built expectation for me to like it, you know?
  • Yeah.  I don't think hype aversion is necessarily a matter of trying to look cool by being contrary.  It's more like, if you hear a lot about how good something is, unless it really does end up being completely amazing, you're probably going to be disappointed with it and you'll like it less than you otherwise would if you hadn't had prior expectations.

  • I compromise. I hold a grudge against people who gush about a certain form of entertainment, and quietly watch it anyway.

...you have grudge against me, AHR? :<

I just think that that's literally the worst reason to not watch/not enjoy something.

I'd been hearing from one of my friends about for years about how totally awesome Black Lagoon is, because  he was trying to get me into anime.

For a long time, I didn't watch it. Not because I was sick of hearing how awesome it was, but because I didn't think I would enjoy it, and because I was resistant to watching Anime at the time.

Then I eventually watched it, and I did really enjoy it  It's one of my favorite shows now, and it would be stupid if I hadn't watched it because I heard how good it was.  Or enjoyed it less for that reason.

    People kept hyping up Homestuck.

I read through most of it. It was... eh. Boring.

People refused to believe I couldn't like it.

See, it's one thing to give something like Homestuck a chance and then not like it, or to not read it because it's not the type of thing you think you'd enjoy.  Everyone has different tastes, it's perfectly fine to not like something that everyone else does.

It's just when people start not liking things specifically because they're popular, or have heard people hyping, that I get kind of irritated.

MLP:FIM causes a lot of this.

A lot of this is because of the premise and general 'cutesiness' of the show.

There may be factors BEHIND the Hype Aversion that the person is not consciously aware of.
  • The premise is the main reason why I don't watch it.

If it replaced all the ponies with bunnies I would watch it.
