  • I wasn't saying that everyone who says they don't like it is bashing it. I'd be contradicting myself if I thought that.
  • I thought you mistook my comment for bashing. My bad.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Sometimes good stuff is unfullfilling due to the hype. Like, you're watching something and you're waiting to see why people make such a big deal out of it, you know?

In that case, it's kind of irrelevant to my point because you have a vested interest in the show.

I certainly get both hype aversion and hype backlash. It would be better if you could just completely forget about the hype while watching something and judge it entirely on it's own merits. However, this isn't always possible, as sometimes the reason you watched it in the first place is so closely tied with the hype. I always try to judge it on it's own and only compare that judgement to the hype afterwards, but I'm sure that I don't always succeed. The mechanics of this also tend to change quite a lot, depending on what kind of hype it is. If say, I am watching a film widely considered to be a classic, I do go in with high expectations and don't necessarily try to lower them beforehand, though it also depends on whether or not said classic sounds like something I'd enjoy. So let's say I'm watching a Kubrick or Kurosawa film, I'm certainly affected by the "hype", since I know these two are widely regarded as some of the best directors  of all time, but this really never negatively affects my ability to enjoy their films, which might also have to do with them being pretty fucking good and living up to that hype, but still. Even with classics that I don't find to live up to their hype, I think I'm pretty much capable of enjoying them and judging them without having that in mind.

So the kind of hype that comes from being considered a classic or from "experts" or connoisseurs of certain art forms, generally doesn't bother me too much. However the kind of hype that new stuff gets can bother me. If something is coming out right now and people are hyping it up as one of the best x of all time, talking about how brilliantly it does this and how intricately it subverts that etc. there is a much bigger chance of this adversely affecting my enjoyment of said thing when I get around to watching/reading it. First of all, hype for things that are currently being made tends to come from a lot of people and it tends to be bombarded at you, from many places at the same time. In other words, you simply get exposed to it more without actively seeking it out and therefore it becomes more annoying. Also, the inherent arrogance of claiming something to be "the x of the decade" etc., before any time has passed at all tends to annoy me. I still try to watch it with an open mind, but I do think that my negative reaction to the hype can somewhat affect my judgement, though I try not to let it.

But let's look at Madoka Magica, which is incredibly overhyped, at least on TVTropes. Both at the forums and on the wiki itself.
"Puella Magi Madoka Magica was one of the most popular
anime franchises as of the Winter 2011 season. It also is a
multi-layered Deconstruction with some form of Wham Line roughly every episode."

You see, claiming that it is this multi-layered deconstruction as a fact, does tend to cause a certain amount of hype backlash for me, because when I saw it, I basically kind of liked it, but didn't think it was anything all that special. But apparently, a lot of other people do and so my opinion gets tainted by that and all I can really talk about, when it comes to Madoka Magica is how much it doesn't live up to the hype and is nowhere near as good as people say it is. If you're interested I wrote a more detailed expression of my opinion in the last post of this thread: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13013009370A38832200&page=2#42
  • Lemme put it this way. I used to like Malcolm in the Middle.
So recently I downloaded ALL of it.
And I watched ALL of it. ALL the way through from start to finish, episode after episode.
And by the end I was so entirely, thoroughly and utterly sick to death of it that I decided I'd never ever watch it again. It is basically the same pattern from start to finish, so I'm sure you get my point.

That is the main thing wrong with hype: Overexposure.  Even something which seems good at first will become a nuisance when you're unwillingly exposed to it day in and day out by everyone else..... especially if they're complete idiots, and you're forced to question why you'd like something that appeals to the lowest common denominator....

So yeah... mostly I know that if everyone else loves something, I'll probably hate it. Vice versa isn't necessarily guaranteed, but sometimes true.

  • "It gets better! You just have to get through the stupid, boring parts first... But it gets better! I swear, it's not subjective at all!"

I've gotten a fresh new hatred of this phrase due to the fact that Cakman keeps using it in my thread >.>
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Which phrase/thread is that?
  • Phrase: "It gets better"

Thread: My GN thread in Writer's Block
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Ah.

I just can't take that phrase seriously.
  • I can't either.
  • The phrase has its uses. If someone is watching something and says, for example "I don't like the brand of humour/how this character is not developed enough/this particular plot development", and you know for a fact that such an issue gets resolved later on in a reasonable timeframe (the humour is dropped/the character is developed/a twist puts that plot development into perspective), it's valid to say "it gets better".

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    "Resolved."

"Better" is a value judgement. In their opinion, the way the show takes it might be even worse than the way it was before.
  • Certainly, but there's where the trust in the word/taste of the person saying that comes into play. If you're working under the assumption that their judgement has no value, one'd wonder why you listened to their suggestion in the first place.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Trust can be misplaced. The person may have just misjudged your tastes, even.
  • Again, "might", "can", "could" , "may". There's always a risk, it's up to you to evaluate the situation accordingly and determine how big the risk is, and if it's worth pursuing.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Exactly. Subjectivity, like has been said before.

Sorry, it was just what nearly everyone who recommended MLP to me said. I figured that if it held true for most fans, it would hold true for the people in this thread.

"Subjectivity" doesn't mean "your opinion on a show is unpredictable".

-marathon'd Hayate no Gotoku when my internet stopped working for a few days-

    -is not sick of it-

(admittedly I think if I tried to watch Monster's entire anime in one go I would get bored)
  • (admittedly I think if I tried to watch Monster's entire anime in one go I would get bored)

I didn't. Well, technically didn't watch it in one go either (it's 75 episodes long, after all), but still.
  • I might be able to go through Monster in one go if I skip every scene that involved that protagonist which replaced Tenma for a few episodes and every scene that doesn't have Grimmer/Anna/Johan/Tenma/Dieter.

I don't like Fuuko. I don't really know why. I didn't shed a single tear or feel any different during her sad ending thing in the visual novel and the anime too. CLANNAD After Story was pretty much the same as the original anime for me.
  • YO YO YO U CAN'T C ME BOUT TO SPIT SUMTIN' STOOPID!
I understand Haruhi's a good series but I have difficulty enjoying it when everywhere I go fat people are dancing to the ending music.

It's weird because I can enjoy Gurren Lagann even though it's overhyped as shit, probably because I saw it before I heard any of the hype.

^ and ^^^ Monster's anime has some filler, if you just read the manga you might like it.  Might not be the best advice coming from be, but considering I enjoyed watching Monster while at the same time I could barely sit through ONE episode of Madlax (some of the shittiest/laziest animation I've seen since Gundam SeeD).  Monster does consist mostly of dialogue, but it's interesting dialogue in my opinion, so I can sit through it.  Maybe being a sucker for Film Noir helps too.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I've only read the first six volumes of Monster so far, but it's great.

I managed to miss most of the hype for Gurren Lagann before I actually watched it.

And I never liked the Haruhi ending music. /nerdheresy
  • You can change. You can.
I don't like Jpop in general so eh.

Also, I keep putting Monster off due to the fact that I really want to enjoy it. As in: "Hole myself on a room with a bucket where I can shit and pee and some supplies till I finish" enjoy it.
