Not a YouTube video but a Vimeo one.

This was the version of the following MAD (i.e. AMV) that used the Japanese version of a song rather than the English version of it, which the MAD creator said had to be used to avoid a copyright strike on YouTube.

Also TIL this forum software auto-embeds Vimeo links.

I learned about the term "enshittification" and it reminded me of these rants.
I don't remember what exactly YouTube was like at the time so I don't remember the basis of some of those points, but I feel like YouTube has actually gotten more honest/"genuine" in its own cynical way, with YouTubers being open about the fact that for many of them that is their job.
(Edit: On the plus side, the sort of videos I liked are more common now, and either clickbait is less common or one way or another I get less recommendations for these.)
And also that the (implementation of the) algorithm has gotten worse and now it can be hard to find a video even if you know its title and content.
I find that non-English YouTube hasn't changed nearly as much.

Edit: Related IJBM: everything is in video form now even if it would serve better in text form.

yeah definitely at that last one

and oh wow, you dug up one of my rants lol

i actually had an argument with someone else on the internet recently, roughly about this

the nominal topic was the youtube algorithm but we basically debated what made stuff clickbait and whether youtube was better/worse than it used to be; i of course argued that it was worse
  • About that, for a while I've wondered if there's a market for a similar video platform but with customizable search and recommendations features, something like however YouTube etc. work internally but with parameters exposed. I'm aware there's may be optimization issues, but maybe not?

One of Lilypichu's videos on League of Legends (for one reason or another she deleted/privated many (most? all?) of her old videos) repeating a bunch of phrases that showcase negative attitudes you may encounter in matches.

I remember some of the lines were "League of Legends, more like League of Casuals", "KS means Kill Secured", "I don't play AD, AP, Bruiser, Jungler or Support" and the last one was "honor please!".

Edit: It's never too late for grammar.

I still don't entirely internalize the fact that nowadays videos are made by groups (employees, contracted freelancers, whatever), that they usually aren't the personal project of whoever is shown/heard within the video.
And also that the (implementation of the) algorithm has gotten worse and now it can be hard to find a video even if you know its title and content.
It took me nearly an hour to find a video of the credits for the original Fantasy Puppet Play (not Dance Performance, not Enhanced).

Regardless of that, after Nico Nico Douga's recovery I've been visiting it now and then, and... yeah, being much more subdued about recommendations makes it much worse for the kind of idle, blind watching that I (and I assume most people) have grown accustomed to over the years. It hurts to say, but YouTube's recommendations algorithm (or rather, its implementation) is better than whatever it is that other video sites use. I wish it were better at finding what you're searching for, though.

I've actually taken to browsing YouTube (1) without a login and (2) using a third-party client like FreeTube or NewPipe, because I find that the search results (if I'm searching) or the related video recommendations (if I've navigated to a video) are much more directly related to the video I pulled up. I actually prefer it this way because I've found that if I just let YouTube suggest stuff, it suggests stuff that's some combination of offensively-unrelated-but-obviously-clickbaity-and-making-the-rounds-on-social-media and/or annoyingly tempting to watch and tending to make me watch endless -- which is something I don't want to do.

Also I can change whether I even see related video suggestions. Because sometimes I don't want the distraction, while sometimes I do want more stuff to watch.
