I suddenly want to play Splatoon.

Okay, well, I again suddenly want to play Splatoon.  This isn't the first time I've felt this way.
  • a little muffled
Yeah I've had that feeling a few times too. Not enough to seriously consider getting a Wii U though.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I went and asked at the local GameStop, just to get a ballpark figure.

For a used WiiU, from $230 for 8 GB to $300 for a WiiU + Super Mario 3D (World?) bundle.

For Splatoon, $60 new and $55 used.

    ----

So for Super Mario Kart (for SNES), there's actually a specific music track played if you make it through all the races but fail to get a podium spot.  That got me thinking again about the score system...

As single-player, you have to place 4th or higher to pass each track, but podium spots are for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, so the lowest possible score is basically to get 4th place for each track.

However, in 2-player mode, it's possible for both players to advance as long as either player gets at least 4th place.  What's the lowest possible score that one can have but still pass the race, in 2-player?

Since there are five tracks, we presume that one player passes 3 tracks and the other player passes 2 tracks.  By pass I mean get 4th or better.  Since 4th place gives 1 point, this means that the player who passes only 2 tracks gets only 2 points.

This is trivial.  However, it might be a little more complicated to figure out what's the lowest possible score needed to get 1st place, or 3rd place.  Or maybe it's actually simple but I'm just too lazy to think about it right now.

you're as much of a scourge on gaming as are violent gorefests like Hatred

Funny thing is that the "as much a scourge on gaming" thing is accurate to my real opinion.
    Specifically the "as much" part.

I don't like the Sakura games, and I don't like Hatred, but past that I'm like, whatever.
Would the gaming world be better served had they not existed?
Yeah.   Do I care to do much about them now that they do?   No, not
really.   They're merely expressions of ideas.  If I've got beef with
those ideas, this stamping them out would be the most idiotic way of
dealing with them — it'd be addressing the symptoms and ignoring the
    cause.

Hatred as a game is really not that offensive. If anything,
what's actually more offensive is how it was basically hailed as some
great testament to political incorrectness (a phenomenon the developer
took full advantage of for marketing purposes).

And again, the problem with the Sakura games is not the fact they
exist.   It's the social implications that they have, perpetuating the
ugly stereotype of visual novels and dating sims being smut, and also
damaging the reputation of games with anime art in places such as Steam
where many people who don't like such games are basically just waiting
for an opportunity to dislike and be dismissive of them as a whole.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
So do Wii U games that come packaged with the Wii U get downloaded and linked to one's Nintendo account or just linked to one's Nintendo system?  Like, how does this whole game downloading thing work?  What happens if someone wants to sell their Wii U?

Hatred couldn't have been marketed without all the handwringing, it's the Trump of videogames.
Likewise harem weeb crap should just be left to the niche specialist sites if a mainstream site will just copypaste the same jeremiad on how it made the reviewer uncomfortable and degrades gaming as an art form. The harshest shit talk will still come from people who actually spend money on figurines of the fap material themselves, as waifu wars never cease. VNs are gaining more prestige than ever if you're not too stringent in what counts, ranging from Telltale games to Twine work.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Yeah I actually tend to group point-and-click adventures with visual novels since they're more similar than other types of games.

Wii U downloads, like Wii, are tied to the console and not the account.  As in, if you clear the console to factory defaults, the downloads will still be listed as purchased, and people who have bought used, wiped machines can see previous downloads still available.

That said, there's some fuzzy linkage to the account, because they want it to be forward-portable to subsequent platforms.  Also IIRC if your console gets bricked, and they can't help you fix it and have to send you a replacement, they do transfer your purchases to a replacement via account connection.  But that's more a courtesy admin thing rather than basic transfer the user can perform.

It seems that it might be linked to NNID rather than the system: http://techforums.nintendo.com/thread/30018

h/t to Rangers51 for the link

    Well, if so, that sucks.

What is it with Compile Heart and making very, very weeb games?  Like, very precisely stereotypically weeb.

    http://www.siliconera.com/2015/09/17/chou-chou-conquering-steam-with-mugen-souls-on-pc/

Cute girls with superdeformed art?  Check.  Fanservice?  Check.  Huge boobs?  Check.  Weird weapons?  Check.  Flashy JRPG attacks?  Check.  Random Japanese cultural artifacts in a European-fantasy setting?  Check.  Even, combo meter?  Check.
  • They aren't making games for weeaboos, they're making games specifically for Japanese otaku in Japan. Like I know this is an inane distinction but they literally said as much themselves with their "Galapagos RPG" project (though Mugen Souls isn't part of that, but that might just be because it was made before they started their Galapagos RPG thing. Currently I think it's just the Fairy Fencer games and *ω* Quintet), which has the explicit goal of making super Japanesey JRPGs that don't cater to international audiences.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
For some reason I don't get that vibe from Fairy Fencer F.

Well, at least, I didn't get any of that vibe from FFF until I saw breast physics, then I was like, nah, it's still there.
  • "you duck spawn, refined creature, you try to be cynical, yokel, but all that comes out of it is that you're a dunce!!!!! you duck plug!"

So, Glenn, wasn't it you who told me once he'd welcome more Slavic mythology in Anglophonic fiction? I've just read of a game, Thea: the Awakening. Apparently it's a sort of a mix between a 4X game and survival sandbox. You watch over a small village located in some unexplored fantasyland, oversee the construction of village facilities, maintain its defenses, and send out exploration parties. The village is populated by unique characters, so there's also an RPG aspect in keeping with their strengths and weaknesses, leveling them up, and helping them stay alive. So, instead of sending a Swordsman #121 to deal with a Goblin, you send Natashas and Ludmilas against leshys and drowners.

    (some pictures)

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
The Witcher 3 turns out to have this neat little nod towards real swordplay that I haven't seen anyone else notice, so here goes:

When you strike a parrying opponent, their stamina will go down and they will suffer blockstun depending on the strength of your attack. Usually, your options are light or heavy (excluding the special sword attacks). Whether you make them parry a light or heavy attack, however, influences what is likely to be your next optimal option. See, the blockstun from a heavy attack pretty much always means that you can get another heavy attack without risking a return attack; connecting with a light attack means that it's best to move around your opponent and pressure their flanks.

In real swordplay, one doesn't really make "heavy" or "light" attacks as such, but the pressure one feels in the crossing of the swords determines the best set of responses. So if your attack is "light" against their "heavy" resistance, you want to flee their strength and seek a weaker target. If your attack turns out to be "heavy" against a "light" resistance, you want to exploit that strength and push that direct advantage.

While The Witcher 3 doesn't represent the literal process, it does successfully tap into the kind of thinking required to take advantage of the crossing of the blades. If you bind weak against their attack, you search for some other place to apply strength; if you bind strongly, you push your advantage until you win. A pretty clever compromise between the real thing and what most gamers find intuitive.
  • Off topic, but I certainly wasn't expecting you to return, Alex. Glad to see you're still as enthusiastic about swords as ever.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Still a big deal. My reasoning these days is a little more sophisticated though, if I do say so myself. Combat systems tend to work better when participants are actively contesting their strategies (see: MtG), so having an attack/block/attack paradigm just hurts things in my opinion. Having some kind of defensive traits attached to attacks (as they are in true swordplay) goes a long way towards ensuring that all participants in combat are throwing down a deliberate strategy.
  • "you duck spawn, refined creature, you try to be cynical, yokel, but all that comes out of it is that you're a dunce!!!!! you duck plug!"
The cat lord just did my best character in ADOM ever. Should've drank that another extra healing potion instead of trying a standard healing. I should be throwing a fit right now, but for some reason I'm more like, damn.

    I wrote up my backlog.

    Need to finish: 18 games

    Barely started: 23 games

Alternate modes yet to try: 8 games

Haven't even touched but mean to play: 51 games

Yet to come (don't yet exist or not yet purchased): 11 games

Nevertheless still playing these for some reason: 2 games

The fact that it's long enough that I need to use toggleboxes is a problem in itself.

    (quote source: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13779981090A33480400&page=92#2281 )

I do not agree that the game deserves to bomb. Will it actually do so,
though? Well, I think it's very likely to underperform. Threads like
this(and the response to them) show us that a vocal segment the folks
who are typically the positive ambassadors for the game(in this case,
the backers) are so fundamentally upset that they're convincing those
less invested but still potentially interested(I am of the latter
category) that the whole thing is @$$ and doomed. Whether or not the
game plays well, it has an enormous albatross around its neck(the
graphics and general dissatisfaction) that'll require majorly good
scores from reviewers to counter(and the demo and gameplay thus far show
a decent game to many, me included, but nothing amazing).

Simply put: I believe the negative buzz around this game is
strong enough to make it DOA unless there's something really special in
there that nobody has witnessed yet, and that is extremely unlikely at
    this point.

This is why I hate the hype and fandoms, and frequently prefer to
discover and play games without people chattering all about them around
    me.

Focus on the game. Stop having expectations about what it should
or shouldn't be. Be open-minded. Don't think in tropes. Don't come
in with expectations. In fact, what you should do to truly enjoy
something is to try your best to hold off any expectations you might be forming, in order to keep an open mind about anything that might happen in them.

  • Unless you literally just choose every game you buy/play completely at random, you have to have some expectations of what the games you play will be like before you play them, otherwise why did you pick this particular game to play instead of any other one?

Also the goal really shouldn't be (or at least doesn't have to be) to "truly enjoy" whatever you're playing. No need to force yourself to like things if they're bad.
  • There is love everywhere, I already know
I don't think I've gone into a form of media without expectations in years, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy stuff.

If that makes me inorganic or whatever, I am great with that.

    Also
I think the only way anybody can enjoy JRPGs is if they go into them
thinking you'll like them and then as you play continue to think so, even as you
spend nine hours grinding characters who have to sit out three person battles who honestly should just get as
much EXP as the ones in your party.
what you should do to truly enjoy
something is to try your best to hold off any expectations you might be forming
This sounds like a weird amount of work for a thing you're presumably planning to do to have fun.

Trails in the Sky SC will be released on PC (GOG and Steam) and PSP on 29 October 2015.

    The price will be US$30.
  • I'm never any good at saying interesting things about fiction, but I just finished* Undertale and it was very good and you should play it, especially if you're me and spent your childhood obsessed with mediocre JRPGs.

    * There are other endings, but I don't think I can bring myself to do what's needed to get them...
