  • "Except you can level to level 9999."

Since you mentioned Final Fantasy, how many more times of grinding time does it take to reach level 9999 in that series compared to reaching level 99 in Final Fantasy?

  • There are dedicated grinding maps in Disgaea.

It takes about 30 minutes to an Hour to get to 9999 if you use them well.

But, after that, you can reincarnate to improve your base stats. This sends you back to level one, where you may grind, reincarnate, grind, reincarnate.....
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
    Hmmm... PSP huh...

Edmond cradles his PSP and pets it, giving it gentle reassurances that eventually it will have a new plaything...

(Unless of course there's some horrible shortcoming to the PSP version I should be aware of. I'm aware that sometimes games don't port very well)
  • "(Unless of course there's some horrible shortcoming to the PSP version I should be aware of. I'm aware that sometimes games don't port very well)"

Nope. The PSP versions of Disgaea are the exact replicas of the PS2 games....just with tons of new content added on.
  • I know Chuggles gonna Chug, but if the only thing you're saying about a game is how high the numbers go, that doesn't really speak for the quality of the game very much.
  • It's pretty funny as well, plus it has exploding penguins.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
And its' characters don't exactly suck :P
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
It's a fun Tactical RPG series with statistical inflation and lolis on the side.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
People keep telling me there are lolis, but I keep forgetting to check the character sprites :C
  • But you never had any to begin with.
    Etna. :P
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I usually end up paying more attention to her tail than anything else :C

    It's like a noodle.
  • Etna isn't a loli.

In fact, Disgaea doesn't really have lolis that much besides Hanako...
  • But you never had any to begin with.
She's less than 5 foot tall and is flat chested. Just because she's 1470 doesn't discount that.
  • No, I meant that she doesn't have the loli personality, really.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Um...it's a physical trait.

That's like saying that a black character who isn't acting like a parody stereotype isn't black.
  • There's a loli personality now?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    > I don't have a lot of time nowadays so I like to see as much of a game as I can in a single play, so I use a walkthrough.

This.  Also, it's okay, you can enjoy the game one way and someone else can enjoy the game another way.

    > But, after that, you can reincarnate to improve your base stats. This
sends you back to level one, where you may grind, reincarnate, grind,
    reincarnate.....

Okay, this REALLY doesn't sound like my sort of game.
  • Etna is a loli.  Trust me.  I should know. :p

Though, the game itself definitely doesn't sound like it would appeal to me, and neither of the other NIS games I've played have been particularly great.  If I really wanted to play a tactical RPG, I'd just play Final Fantasy Tactics again.  Since, actually, I never beat that! :o  -puts that on to-do list-

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I have to say the general story is fun, but the grinding is tedious, especially with the reincarnation and levelling up the weapons.

If they reduced the levelling and worked more on skill development + monster catching it would be vastly improved in my eyes.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I've played FFTA some but have never gotten around to playing FFT itself.
  • The original FFT is far better than FFTA, if you can get past the crappy translation.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    I've heard.

Thing is that FFTA was already so involved that I would be thinking about it all day long and stuff.  So I really have to wait for the right time to play FFT.

And knowing is half the battle!

Ugh. Yeah, one reason I don't get into this genre much is because I basically never beat the tactical RPGs I have. Had Shining Force I and II for almost a decade, only now am I making a serious attempt to win at them.

After that, I've got Saiyuki: Journey West, Ogre Battle PS1 and the entire Pool of Radiance/SSI Gold Box series (do those count as tactical RPGs?) to go thru.

Why do I have so many games. WHYYYYYYYYYYYY

That's just part of its charm.

In my experience, most "crappy" translations are usually better than the supposedly "better" translations. Compare: FF6 on SNES to FF6 on GBA. The former is a blast. The latter comes off like some pretentious literary dipshit got his hands on it.
  • Well, yeah.  I actually do like the original translation of Final Fantasy Tactics a lot.  There are some parts (the tutorial especially) though where it really is completely horrible.  It did give us a lot of memorable lines though, which the PSP translation decided to completely remove, plus the PSP translation decided to write everything in pseudo-Shakespearean English.  So I definitely think the original is far superior to the remake's translation, at least.
  • "I have to say the general story is fun, but the grinding is tedious, especially with the reincarnation and levelling up the weapons."

    Dude

That's what makes Disgaea better than all the other boring ass RPGS out there
  • Disgaea is better than other boring RPGs cause you need to do even more of the boring stuff? Wut.

Also, people keep going on about "ooh look how high I level I can get, look at the billions of damage I can do". When really, none of it matters, it's all relative.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Insert plug for Demon's Souls or Dark Souls here, as usual.

    Again.
