Or, hell, even a typical Final Fantasy game doesn't have a whole lot of grinding in it (unless you're going for 100% completion or whatever), and certainly not as a focus of the game.
  • I wish there were more turn based strategy RPGs other than that Disgaea shit.

As for recent ones, there's Record of Agarest War (and its prequel), though I haven't played it so I don't have the slightest idea how it is.  Other than that... I dunno, since I don't really pay much attention to new games.

I've played a bit of Agarest War. It would be okay if not for the fact they are around fifteen scripted random battles (as in, they occur at certain points but have no story) between each story event. Fifteen random battles (and sometimes more). Between each story event. In an SRPG. No thanks.
  • ^^^^ Final Fantasy 5 says hi. >.>

Not that it makes it a bad game. That's probably my favourite FF. Because Gilgamesh.
  • Still, controlling the Omega prototype to blow up on itself is satisfying as all hell.
  • "Or, hell, even a typical Final Fantasy game doesn't have a whole lot of grinding in it (unless you're going for 100% completion or whatever), and certainly not as a focus of the game."

And thus you see why FF is a crappy series.
  • Because it has actual content?
  • Wait, not requiring a ridiculous amount of grind is a bad thing?

    ...What.
  • Does FF let you grind to 9999 and do 400 Quadrillion damage?

    NO.

Ergo, Disgaea is objectively better than FF.
  • Oh, great, now you've done it. You've forced me to take extreme measures. I must subject you to the Japanese Tidus Laugh.
  • Play a final fantasy game. Now just pretend there's a couple of extra zeros or nines...whatever, on the end of every damage number, hit point and level. Now Final Fantasy is just as good as Disgaea by your logic.

  • There's also the fact that Disgaea has vastly more interesting storylines and characters.

FF is just "generic Emo with spiky hair and no personality does generic hero shit".

    Chagen, you... like grinding?

    ...M'kay, then...

^ FFT and FF6 are really good actually. And Disgaea isn't funny.
  • edited 2011-10-10 17:27:07
Of course. Because Bartz, Tidus, Zidane and Firion all spent their time being emo. Also all those other party members who weren't Cloud or Squall.
  • I like grinding when it has a purpose.

"^ FFT and FF6 are really good actually. And Disgaea isn't funny."

You have no sense of humor.
  • FF is just "generic Emo with spiky hair and no personality does generic hero shit".

That meme was started by Final Fantasy 7, so that should tell you that at least 6 other games don't do that.

Also, it's worth noting that Final Fantasy 7 wasn't actually like that anyway, nor were any of the games after it.  The Final Fantasy games don't really have amazing stories, but there are far more valid criticisms than what you said.

^^Says the guy that had to be subjected to the Japanese Tidus Laugh.

^Though Cecil and Terra were pretty angsty too.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
This thread has too much turn-based.

Possibly requires moar Valkyria Chronicles. Even if that's turn based, if unusually.
  • I really want to play that game one day.
  • edited 2011-10-10 17:31:55
    @Chagen: I don't have Disgaea's humor. There's a difference.

Also, you do realize almost all Final Fantasy games involve the main character evolving past simply an emo spiky-haired git, right? Cloud evolved, Squall evolved, even fucking Tidus evolved.

Valkyria Chronicles is a great game. At least game play wise. The dialogue makes me cringe. Too bad they're probably not gonna translate the third game for the west.
  • But that would imply they have character development. D:

Which would mean they have a decent story. D:

Also, re: part of the topic I wasn't here for, I didn't hate FFTA. >.>
  • I didn't hate FFTA either.  It's just that the original FFT was god-tier, and FFTA was just above-average-tier.
  • If you want some real arguments in favor of Disgaea, I guess I could say something like the Geo Puzzles.

Actually, the late game isn't focused on grinding as much as it is puzzles. Grindings only there for bragging rights and beating Baal.

"But that would imply they have character development. D:

They do. It can be argued how well their character development was handled (I think Tidus' development was handled poorly), but they develop.
  • Wasn't FFTA infamous for the protagonist's actions being questionable? Though I guess one could say the same about The Matrix if you disagreed with either's message.
  • edited 2011-10-10 17:39:54
^^^^ Oh, fair enough. I haven't really played much FFT. Mainly because the gameplay seemed kinda...horribly easy to break. Although I guess the same could be said for all Final Fantasy games.

^^ I know. I liked the stories of the FF games I've played. Well, for the most part.

    ^ Yep. He's a selfish dick.
  • And of course, everyone ignores me when I try to present an argument

    Like you ALWAYS do

    Oi vey
  • edited 2011-10-10 17:41:10
    Yeah, Marche was an ass.

FFT is a great game. I prefer Ogre Battle: Let us Cling Together to FFT, but FFT is still a great game.

^ Is that your persecution complex rearing it's head? Oi vey!
