Anime is something of a lazy medium

    > ^"YMMV" or whatever the kids are calling it these days

    Fair enough.

And for that matter, to be fair, lazy animé animation does show.  It's obvious when everyone's actions line up way too exactly to be believable.  For example, this was noticeable in some scenes in Uta~Kata where both of Ichika's parents would nod and open their mouths at the exact same time.

That said, what I was thinking of is what I call the "generic animesque style".  For good examples of this, click any of the characters here.  I generally like this style.

Notably, this does NOT include various other styles.  Some of them, like the 80s animé style, I'm fine with.  Some of them, such as super-macho styles, I just tolerate.  Moë, with its extra-oversized eyes and minimized other facial features, is an example of a style I dislike.
  • They're somethin' else.
^The use of "just tolerate" makes me wonder: what exactly do you have against animation of that style?
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
I'm frankly rather amazed that they discovered a formula for making drawn human characters look aesthetically pleasing without spending much time for drawing.

Yes, it's so simple to draw that eliminates the need to art school.  I'm not exactly kidding with that part.

^^ I meant that I don't hate it, but I'm also not an enthused fan of it and prefer something else.
  • Damn it GMH!  I'm gonna go watch Uta Kata now just because I'm mad that every time you mention an anime, it's something I've never seen.  (though... I guess this is true for other people too but... I dunno.  It's more noticeable when it's you, or something)

Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
That one episode of Gurren Lagann was terrible. The change in style and the general cheapness of it just took me out of that episode.
  • Episode 4 of Gurren Lagann was bad enough to make me stop watching the series... >.>

(Yes, I know none of the other episodes are like that)
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington

I couldn't wait till it was over. I'm glad the whole series didn't look like that or else I wouldn't have watched it all.

Apparently that one episode was so bad, someone high up got fired over it.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^^When showing the series to my roommate, I just had him skip it. When the characters introduced in it showed up later, I just said "they were introduced in the crappy episode you haven't seen."
  • Yeah, that's what I'll do whenever I get around to trying to watch it again.
  • You can change. You can.
It seems I'll have to skip it myself.
  • Quit being a whiny bitch and man up.
    Megas XLR was shit.
  • You can change. You can.
And this is why we know your opinion in media doesn't count.

@DYRE: It's a pretty good series, as long as you ignore the few male gaze moments and slightly stilted animation.  It's got quite a lot of interesting story themes to ponder.  It'll leave you thinking about it for a while.  Which I think is a good thing.

And when you finish watching it I'll have someone to talk about it with.
  • You can change. You can.
    You're talking about Lagann, right?
  • edited 2011-08-09 16:54:32

    He's talking about Uta Kata.

Though... I suppose what he said could probably apply to Gurren Lagann too...

I didn't really like Megas XLR either, but that's just me.

If I want an example of Americans doing a Japanese thing better than the Japanese, I watch Battletech (you can find eps on Youtube).

Normally I don't really mind the artstyle as long as the work itself is genuinely entertaining, but there are a few manga I've read that had a "style over substance" problem. Recently I tried to read Di Gi Charat and couldn't get into it because, well... I imagine its the kind of manga most people think of when they say "moe." Just a bunch of preteen girls being mindlessly cute, without a lot of actual substance or depth. I wound up getting rid of it, it was so insipid.

I would like to follow this up by saying "it makes me appreciate Lucky Star all the more" but lately I've been trying to marathon through Ranma 1/2 since its been awhile.

Fuck that noise; who doesn't like giant robots?

I'm fine with giant robots but they had better at least have an excuse of a justification if I'm supposed to take them seriously.

I just think mecha aren't very interesting as a concept. A lot of times I really care about the human characters, and a lot of giant robot shows have me thinking that if they did the same situation, just without the mechs, it would prolly be a ton more interesting.

Shows like Super Dimension Fortress Macross, where the mecha are just kind of there, don't really bother me in this regard though. I seem to recall liking the original Gundam movies too, but I've lost my VHS tapes...
