    I find that I care more about the humans in mech shows too.  Though I've never pondered whether the show would work without the mechs.  Then again I haven't seen many mech shows at all.

    The original Gundam series (and its sequels) are extremely well-known for the human characters, to the point that Char Aznable is probably the most widely-recognized anime character in Japan.  Of course, the mechs make up a good deal of the show too, but overall the focus is on the humans.

    Which is why I hate gundam. Hey, awesome giant robot, lets use them to spout faux philosophy at one another about the naiure of man, war, reality, or whatever topic we feel like essaying about.

    I always though the ultimate Gundam pilot would be someone who is mute, so they can't do the navel gazing thing and thus their attention is 100% on shooting the other guy in the face.
