  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Yeah, threadhopping is probably a bad idea here. As has been noted, there are exceptions.

It's likely that the knight will win, but it's not a sure thing.
  • I just didn't expect this thread to have a serious discussion going after 160+ posts.

If it's talking about swords and you see Alex and I posting in here, chances are it's probably at least semi-serious.
  • Which always makes me feel bad when I have over-the-top swordfighting in my writing.

It makes me imagine Alex reading the story and going "SWORDS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY"

Well, you could potentially combine over-the-top and real technique. You'd be amazed of what well-trained but otherwise normal people can pull of with a sword. Even a shitty sword.

EDIT: Blunt force trauma is the most dangerous thing to a plate-armoured knight, but an arrow won't provide it; all the power is transferred at the point of contact, which is small and will then disperse through the armour, then through the padding underneath. You're gonna feel it, but you probably aren't going to worry about it.

    Speaking specifically of club arrows.

Although looking it up, they do tend to lack power (Power enough to kill small animals and break bones on humans wearing leather jackets, apparently, but will do jack against armour unless it strikes in, say, the head) and stability (Without a sharp tip, ain't gonna fly very straight).

True story: Deadliest Warrior has a Spartan Vs Samurai episode. The Spartan wins, mainly because a shield is just that awesome.

My one issue with the shield and spear combination is that it's completely dependent on formation combat tactics. A spear, used two handed, can be used like a staff with a pointy end, but using a shield in the off hand reduces it to a much more limited thrusting weapon. Make it past that pointy end and you're in for some fun, because you can be outside the threat range of both the spear and the shield.
