Doctor Who - "Let's Kill Hitler"

Ugh. Just when I thought the show was going up, it pulls an episode that is chalk full of bullshit. If I talked about everything we'd be here all day, so I'll just say two words: Weaponized Regenerations. That is all.

Uhhh no, it wasn't the regeneration that destroyed the TARDIS, it was the fact that it ran into several buildings and finally crash-landed during its uncontrolled flight.

Didn't see any other Doctor Who threads here...

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
There were definitely explosions going on while ten was regenerating.
  • You can change. You can.
Yeah, the TARDIS crashed because Ten regenerated on it.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
We do have a rule against going into a thread and posting just to say you don't approve of the thread, FYI.

Anyway. I really liked it. And yes, it was Ten's regeneration that destroyed the TARDIS and caused it to crash. It's hit buildings before without the inside being damaged.
  • Glaives are better.
What "weaponized regenerations?" Did you watch a different episode than I did?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^Um...did you miss the bit where [River kills like 10 nazis who shot her with the energy released by regenerating from the wounds?]
  • Glaives are better.
She used it to shoot the bullets inside of her back at them.I thought it was cool.
  • You can change. You can.
Anyway, I just finished watching the episode

    One:

    * Mels? Most annoying person ever
    * River and the Doctor's "dance" where they one-up each other is the shit
    * I felt empty watching this episode. Like...I didn't feel any of the "holy shit"-ness I knew I was supposed to be feeling.
    * I kinda wanted the Doctor to die instead of what we got (Moar River/Doctor fluff)
    * I expected the episode to be more about Hitler. I'm also mildly disappointed this didn't happen.
    * The tiny people controlling a human body thing of the episode was...ugh. It wasn't bad, but I feel that they could have gone for something better and less...odd.
    * The bit where the Doctor is asking for a voice interface is neat
    * The bit where the Doctor is interacting with said voice interface is not neat
  • I Agree with Juan.

    Also

I feel... like this was badly paced at some parts.

with tangents often being almost completely abandoned just for the sake of it.
  • You can change. You can.
Also, I'm not liking the idea that the Silence is an order instead of an species. Not. One. Bit.

And the question thing? Oh, come on, there's a point where referencing Douglas Adams is OK, and there's a point where you're making it so obvious that it isn't funny.

    this is the second case.
  • Ten Things About This Episode of Doctor Who (Spoilers btw)

    1) As far back as the Fifth Doctor's regeneration, he's told companions to stand back, add in the destruction caused by Ten and yeah, there is a precedent for destructive regeneration.

    2) If the TARDIS has a voice interface, then why can't Sexy be around?

    3) If the question is "Doctor who?" I'll kill myself.

    4) I liked the episode overall, but I totally get what Juan is saying about emptiness.

    5) If the Silence isn't a species, but a religious movement then what are the Silents from Impossible Astronaut?

    6) So, did the Doctor GET River's extra lives, or did she use them all up to bring him back?

    7) Am I the only one who doesn't like River as a Time Lord? She doesn't FEEL Time Lordy

    8) Her regeneration was also quite shit, I wasn't feeling it.

    9) I wish Mels had been more prominent, as it is, she's kinda shit.

    10) At least we know Time Lords can change race when they regenerate.
  • You can change. You can.
    2) If the TARDIS has a voice interface, then why can't Sexy be around?

    5) If the Silence isn't a species, but a religious movement then what are the Silents from Impossible Astronaut?

They are probably like the Headless Monks. AKA: They are mutants.

    7) Am I the only one who doesn't like River as a Time Lord? She doesn't FEEL Time Lordy

Part of the problem is that we spent so much time with her thinking that she was human. The other part of the problem is that Kingston's performance was that of a sassy young lass that took the doctor by the tie and made him her bitch. This is not Time Lord behavior

    8) Her regeneration was also quite shit, I wasn't feeling it.
    9) I wish Mels had been more prominent, as it is, she's kinda shit.

    Agreed.
  • Since spoilers have been shown to the public by Mr. Conductor, I'll compose my own list of things.

    A. It didn't feel very prominent, which is jarring for a return to the series show. It basically felt like one of those filler episodes like "Curse of the black spot" In which case, it moved stuff along, but felt like the story had just gone "alrighty then!" (No establishment for this Robot Man, A hackneyed explanation for the silence, etc)

The reason this point is soo prominent is because of the quality of other, better season openers.

Take the Eleventh Hour and Impossible Astronaut for instance. both of them show a return to form for the Doctor, both of them feature an underlying mystery that just can't wait to be solved, both of them take some time to establish ...ANYTHING!

    B. I'm just gonna go right ahead and say it, River Song, In this one, don't like her, one bit.

    That's my opinion however.
  • You can change. You can.
the funny thing about River is that I think that we're gonna see her be more and more immature as we go by. Reverse character development. Which can (and will be, imo) incredibly jarring.

and yeah, part of the problem is that normally, whenever the series gave us a break, it then gave us a trip of a lifetime (The Impossible Astronaut was indeed amazing)

Really? I thought it was pretty obvious even as of the second episode of the season.
If the Silence isn't a species, but a religious movement then what are the Silents from Impossible Astronaut?
Presumably, members who were sent to Earth to manipulate its history with their unique abilities.
Am I the only one who doesn't like River as a Time Lord? She doesn't FEEL Time Lordy
Well, for all intents and purposes, the River we already knew was just a human with a long lifespan.
Reverse character development. Which can (and will be, imo) incredibly jarring.
Yeah, I know what you mean, but the alternative wouldn't make sense...it's just something we need to accept if we want to have the character at all.

BTW, was I the only one who wanted the last scene to be a quick shot of Hitler in the closet going "so...can I come out now?"

  • You can change. You can.
Really? I thought it was pretty obvious even as of the second episode of the season.

I can see the Silence being both an order and a species. But I don't see how it was hinted that they were not a species and just an order.

BTW, was I the only one who wanted the last scene to be a quick shot of Hitler in the closet going "so...can I come out now?"

I was saddened that Hitler wasn't exploited for all the comedic potential he had. "Hitler. Cupboard." is probably my favorite line in that episode. That and

"Thank you. I think you just saved my life."
"Believe me, it was an accident"

Well, they pretty much wiped out the species, but I got the distinct impression that the arc wasn't over at all.

Also, they kept saying "Silence will fall," which wouldn't make much sense if they were talking about themselves.
  • You can change. You can.
Ah. No, I don't think the arc is over. It's just that I think that if the Silence is an order, it means that we shouldn't have just seen mini Cthulhus and there should have been more variety in the members.

    Mini-Nyarlathotheps would have worked too.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Oh, good point. I definitely think they could use some more variety in members.

Though using mostly humans leaves more budget available for them to do important stuff :P

Five told his companions to stand back because he's capable of completely erratic behavior while regenerating and didn't want to accidentally hurt them out of.. whatever is going on in his head at the time. NOT because Regenerations are big and explodey!
  • You can change. You can.
Welp, then explain the TARDIS crashing and exploding.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
What needs explaining? It's more New Who retardery is all it is. They wanted a big, flashy end to David Tennant's run (not to mention an excuse to redesign the TARDIS) and they got it.

I got a better question: if regenerations are destructive then why was the transition from Ten to Eleven the first time in the show's 60+ year history that we've ever seen it? Keep in mind, besides seeing the Doctor we've also seen the Master regenerate, and also Romana. It's nothing more than a huge, stupid retcon, just like the time Sarah Jane and the Doctor were romantically involved.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Oh no, the writers have added to the canon?

It really shouldn't be that bothersome.

    Regarding the episode:
I'm glad they didn't really focus on Hitler/Nazis it would have come off as a little cheesy,
  • You can change. You can.
I just wanted the Doctor to mock Hitler and to punch him in the balls while God Save The Queen blared through the speakers

    Is that too much to ask? ;_;
