Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
^ Fate/stay night. Unlimited Blade Works route.

^^Calling an entire medium bad with nothing to back your claim up is dumb.

    QED.

To back up INUH's point, when you talk about a medium as a whole, you're encompassing a very large body of works. Such generalizations are possible, for sure, and it's true that some mediums (media?) have identifiable patterns that reach all or the vast majority of said body. However, a vague qualifier such as "bad" has a lot of connotations, first of all, there's the issue as to whether something can be called good or bad with a certain degree of objectivity, and even assuming it could, by what criteria do we measure that? and are we qualified to make said measurement? So, to say that an entire medium is bad, one would have to:
*Detect patterns or trends that affect the whole medium.
*Provide valid reasons as to why these trends are bad, and why their being bad is enough to make the medium as a whole bad.
Not providing said backing for your claims will result in having a weak argument that others will dismiss, failing to convince others of what you're trying to convey, which is half of the point of fruitful discussions (the other half being learning).

    Alternatively, Vorpys gonna vorp.

I think it's the second one.

I just wanted to bring up UBW, because it's one of my favorite things ever.
  • edited 2011-08-14 17:00:52
I quite enjoyed UBW too. It clearly has problems (The prose is Nasu level (but that's hardly just UBW's problem), and the climatic confrontation happened a bit too early, when the plot realized that hey, Gilgamesh's still around and he's still pretty frickin' tough, leading to a final battle and ending that was running out of steam (even if "Hey King of Heroes, do you have enough swords?" was awesome) but it was a great ride regardless.

^ Agreed on just about everything.  When it was good, it was really good.  But it's flaws were definitely there.  The good points, and Shirou vs. Archer especially, were awesome enough that I can overlook them, though.

Started Saya no Uta.  I'm liking it so far.  I'm not a huge fan of the normal-world art, but the hallucination backgrounds and people have a really cool look to them, even if I'm probably supposed to be  more disgusted by them.  Music-wise, I like Saya's theme quite a bit.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
You should play Plumbers Don't Wear Ties next
  • And while we're at recommendations, Ace Attorney mainline games, do it.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I played the first one and loved it, because I noticed it was on iOS for like five bucks.  Haven't played any of the others.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^I was going to recommend them until he said he lost his DS.
  • Yeah, it sucks that capcom hasn't released the rest for iOS
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
It sucks more that Investigations 2 isn't hitting the US, be it on iOS or DS.
  • Eh, I can live without Gaiden games. It sucks even more that the prospect of AA5 seems increasingly unlikely.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Yeah, that is pretty awful.

Really, the main reason I'm disappointed about Investigations 2 is that apparently, [it lets you play as Gregory Edgeworth for awhile, which sounds awesome.]

    I finished Saya no Uta

So. Best question to ask someone who just finished it: which ending did you think was the most positive outcome?

[Using spoilertext for your answer would probably be good.]
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Hmm...

I guess the most positive ending would be the one where [Fuminori tells Saya to make him normal again, and he ends up in a mental hospital.  In that one, he doesn't go insane, Yoh doesn't get turned into a sex slave/beaten to death, Kouji doesn't get driven mad or killed, Tanbo doesn't die, and the world doesn't get Sayafied.]

My favorite ending would probably be the one where [Kouji and Tanbo work together and kill Saya, which makes Fuminori commit suicide, and Kouji goes kind of insane], which happens to be the first one I got.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Hmmm...your impressions and order for getting the endings both seem to be identical to mine.

Incidentally, [Tanbo] is by far the most Genre Savvy character in a Cosmic Horror Story that I've ever seen.

It made me want to read a lot more cosmic horror that didn't have tons of gratuitous sex in it.  I need to go dig out my Lovecraft anthology that I don't think I ever actually read.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I have a couple of Lovecraft collections I haven't finished. Of course, given how massive my backlog of works to read/play/watch/verb is...it'll likely be a bit.

    I have this one.

And I know that feel, bro.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    I have...three, I think. There's a bit of overlap between them.

One of my favorites is The Rats in the Walls. The first magazine Lovecraft submitted it to apparently rejected it for being too scary. The second magazine he submitted it to said it was the best story they'd ever received, for precisely the same reason.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I haven't even read very many of them yet.

I read Shadow Over Innsmouth, Call of Cthulhu, and... a few other ones.  I forget.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I like Shadow Over Innsmouth, but every time I read it, I can't shake the voice in the back of my head saying "this is Lovecraft decrying the evils of interracial marriage."
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Yeah, I somehow managed to completely miss that subtext the first time I read it.

Also, starting up Higurashi Kai now.  Meakashi-hen, here I come!  :D

oh my god, keiichi's porn rant was epic
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Have I mentioned that I love Higurashi?

    Because I fucking love Higurashi.

I just finished Tsumihoroboshi-hen.  I think that may be literally one of my favorite things that I've ever read, ever.  I take back everything I said about the music.  Dear You, Birth and Death, and Samayoi no Kotoba wa Ten ni Michibikare were incredibly effective at setting the mood and playing my heartstrings like a fiddle.  The scene where Keiichi remembers the events of Onikakushi was possibly the most emotionally moving scenes from anything.

Yeah, triple post.  I'm too busy riding the high to care.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    I know that feel bro

well not really because I haven't played the VNs yet (god damn you download manager)
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
You really should. When I heard how much better the VNs were than the anime, I was skeptical. But the VNs blow it out of the water.

We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
I sort of gave up on 07th Expansion altogether when I realized that Legend of the Golden Witch wasn't going to pick up until several more hours into it.
