What do you think of Fanservice and Why?

Because I am interested, after watching a few movies at work, and when actresses get naked and everyone goes woo except for the kid with the glasses and he goes "hmmm..." and looks around nervously, like somebody is going to scrutinize him for thinking Tara Reid getting dressed is mildly titillating.

-shrug-

What is your stance on it?

I am honestly okay with it.

  • I like fans. they get a nice cool breeze
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
I mild quantities, I'm okay with it. More than that, I find it embarrassing at best and insulting at worst.

Lolicon fanservice? In any amount? GTFO!
  • If you know who the majority of your fans are, and you want to appeal to them, then I guess that's your thing, but you might be making some people feel uncomfortable
  • In large quantities, it makes me wonder exactly what kind of movie or show I'm watching. If that makes any sense.
  • You can change. You can.
It feels uncomfortable, to be honest. But if the series is really that good/interesting/whatever, I find it interesting. And depending on the work, I can even straight out enjoy it and think of it as a plus (Such as in aesthetically driven works and the like)

And there're some work that play it for lulz which makes them particularly entertaining.
  • For some interesting series. it always makes me wonder if they thought the concept couldn't hold up enough fans without "Lulz, naked people"
  • You can change. You can.
Welp, to be fair, naked people are tons of fun.

And jokes aside, thing is, shows are not just written and designed by writers. Executives think that some people like to see naked bits, so they give 'em the naked bits.

Honestly, there being fanservice doesn't really detract from a series. And if it really bothers you that much, you can always skip it or something.
  • I stand on Grendel's shoulders
As long as it's not of frikkin' children, I don't care.
  • To be or not to be? That is the question.
I'm fine with Fanservice, but lolicon? GET AWAY FROM ME!
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
@ The three who mentioned lolicon: If you hate it so much, why is it apparently the first thing that jumps into your heads when fanservice is brought up?
  • You can change. You can.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Fanservice is okay, I just don't like it bearing down heavily or breaking up an otherwise good moment.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    ^^ It's Paedophile.

    Not that I would know.
  • Seconding everything that Neo and Alex said. It's fine when it's subtle / tasteful (as tasteful as fanservice can be, at least), but having it shoved in your face all of the time is just annoying.
  • If you hate it so much, why is it apparently the first thing that jumps into your heads when fanservice is brought up?

Hate is a strong feeling? And people are quicker to talk about what they don't like than what they do, and that's true for almost anything.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Dammit, Waltzy, stop pointing out flaws in my joke :P
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
It is kinda weird that loli fanservice was brought up so quickly, since most fanservice concerns large-breasted women in their teens and twenties.

    You can change. You can.
His point was "Why is the word Fanservice (AKA: A word that is used to define pandering to the audience via titillation) related in your brains to lolicon (AKA: Fetish for little kids)"

Just sayin'. INUH is right. It's not only DYRE and Evilneko who like the lolis~
  • Ohh sorry INUH~. n//////n

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
  • They're somethin' else.
If its use is timed well enough, I don't mind. If there's a reason for it, all the better. If its used for no reason whatsoever or given no justification, I will become mildly ticked off. If it becomes excessive, I might just stop watching all together.
  • Glaives are better.

If it stops the plot (or worse, absorbs the plot) then I get irritated. If it's involved with the plot or action - say, the female lead firing an assault rifle while wearing only a thong - then I like it. If it's one of those retarded beach episodes, like in those girly Chinese cartoons you all like, then I don't like it.

  • Electric Boogaloo
Fanservice isn't all that bad if it's used in moderation and never becomes the focus for watching/reading/playing the work. Unless it's a porn, the big drawing factor for a work should be the plot, characters, setting, or whathaveyou, not the amount of panty shots you get to see. That's how you know you have a weak-ass work, is when more people are drawn to your work because of the fanservice than the actual work itself.

While not all fanservice pisses me off, gratuitous fanservice certainly does, and it's very telling about the work's quality as a whole.
  • @Juan_Carlos, that's not really a good argument for Fan-service "you can skip it"

Why in the hell am I even watching it if they're literally parts I'm not going to watch because it adds nothing?
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Just to clarify, are we using the original, literal, definition of fanservice (obvious pandering to the fans) or the most commonly used definition (any sexually titillating act that isn't outright pornographic)?
  • You can change. You can.
If the fanservice is really unimportant to the plot, then I don't see why you shouldn't skip it. As to why are you watching, maybe it is because you find other elements of the work in question worthwhile?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
All I'm going to give is my usual spiel about how if even a fifth of the people saying they hated fanservice were actually being honest, it wouldn't be as ubiquitous as it is.
  • You can change. You can.
    > Implying that people who are vocal about hating fanservice are even as ubiquitous as you seem to think they are beyond internet culture.

    Electric Boogaloo
^^Except I don't hate fanservice. I hate gratuitous fanservice. There be a difference.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^And did I say anything to indicate the comment was directed at you?

^^They're pretty ubiquitous IRL too, if only that's because it's what you're supposed to say.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of fanservice where I just feel insulted, but going out of your way to mention how much you dislike it feels like white knighting to me.
