What do you think of Fanservice and Why?

Well a fifth could mean anyone!

    Hey, if the shoe fits...

I'm now imagining a "fanservice shoe"
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I think tone is also important to fanservice. I find the fanservice in Bayonetta a lot more acceptable than the the ass shots in the Transformers films.

@Malk: I doubt the number of people who don't like fanservice is anywhere near enough to actually influence the course of any show's production, compared to those who do and those who don't care.

Malk: That's another thing. If the work focuses in some way around sensuality or sexual stuff is one of it's main appeals, fanservice, even when it's obnoxious and in your face, is alright. If it's something about anthropomorphic cupcakes or something like that, most amounts of fanservice just come off as awkward, and in some cases, creepy.

    ^Seconding this.
  • You can change. You can.
^^They're pretty ubiquitous IRL too, if only that's because it's what you're supposed to say.

You seem to run in social circles. I seem to run in social ovals.

    Also, agreed with DonZabu.

Eh, there may be the case that they're a vocal minority, but in the circles I gather in at least, there seems to be this unspoken rule that enjoying the sexy somehow automatically makes you a misogynist.

Of course this area is puritan as hell, too, though.

IJBM: People who deny their sexual urges and act superior for it.
  • Of course this area is puritan as hell, too, though.

    There you go.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
For what it's worth, sometimes I really like fanservice, if it's conveniently placed.
  • Glaives are better.
Blame feminists. Somewhere along the line "treating women like they're only useful for sex" became confused with "seeing a woman in a sexual light at all."
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    > Hatter
    > Politics

    Goddamnit.
  • Not so much "politics" as "social issues / movements", but same difference I guess.
  • Glaives are better.
Madass, you should leave on your coat when you come online.
  • Not necessarily an impediment to the story, but most often taken to a degree such that it is, and the things I tend to like have the good sense to focus on the important parts instead.

    I stand on Grendel's shoulders
RE bringing up loli: Because I recently observed a discussion in which pedophilic fanservice happened to be discussed, which meant that was recently on my mind. Since that was recently on my mind, that's what quickly came up.

As for fanservice I actually like best, which is obviously dudes, I wish I got more of dudes I actually like. The trouble is that most straight women like muscle tone, and I'm turned off by muscle tone.

Other kinds of fanservice I tolerate and ignore.
  • Glaives are better.
You don't like muscle tone? You're weird. You're a weirdo. I'm a straight male, and even I like muscle tone. Weirdo.

Actually, what is weird is that even though I'm straight and I don't like muscle tone in men, I like to see muscle tone in women. When I see that sort of thing, I'm like "you go girl".

(I can't believe I actually used that phrase.)

I think muscle tone is usually present in males to distinguish them from just really androgynous looking chicks.

That being said, Linda Hamilton in T2 was fuckin' hoooooooot!

I like to enjoy stories.  So if fanservice take my attention away from the story, then it detracts from the quality of the work.

I don't mind aesthetically-pleasing characters.  No one does (in general).  But when a work goes out of its way to emphasize sex appeal, I don't like that.

@MadassAlex: No, it's just feminism.  Feminism is a berserk button for Hatter for some reason.
  • Glaives are better.
Part of conventional masculine beauty is physical fitness. You see it all the way from Michaelangelo's David to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Feminism is political, insofar as we're using a definition of politics that includes its functional elements rather than its bullshit ones.
  • But going from those, tiny dicks are also a part of conventional masculine beauty.
  • Glaives are better.
Actually, I've found that the people who are more obsessed with dick size is men. Large penises are apparently painful for women to have sex with, unless you're either hoping to find oil in your vagina or your nether regions are made of spandex.

Part of conventional feminine beauty should be physical fitness too. I'm sick and tired of flimsy, useless women.

And yes I do realize that makes me a hypocrite as I have a thing for flimsy, useless men. :Þ

^^^ And Michaelangelo's "David" is completely nude.  Yes, you can see his junk.
  • Gee, thanks for that update, Glenn. I can't believe I never noticed that before now. Next you'll be telling me that (healthy) grass is green and that water is wet.
  • Glaives are better.
Oh, I like fit women as much as the next guy.
  • You can change. You can.
    Knowing Glenn, he will.
  • I stand on Grendel's shoulders
Did you know that healthy grass is wet and water is green?
